Ubuntu :: Windows Vista Kernel Still On Computer After Upgrade?

Jan 3, 2010

I recently upgraded to win7 (home premium 64bit) from win vista and everything went well. But when i was installing ubuntu i noticed that win vista was taking up part of the C drive (like 10 gigs!) (i saw this in the part of the instalation where you set the ubuntu partition.) SO anyway i was wondering if anyone knew a way to completely get rid of the vista kernel and free up that space its taking up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows VISTA Won't Boot After 10.4 Upgrade?

Jun 5, 2010

After the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 I'm not able to boot on my Windows Vista any more. It is most likely due to my fault during installation, since I ask to overwrite with GRUB also Windows partition's MBR (but if I remember well I think it was not the best solution to put as default overwriting all the MBRs).Anyway I was not able to fix it until now. Here is the RESULT.txt from the boot script:

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Ubuntu :: Windows Vista Gone - When Restart - Does Not Give Me The Option For Windows

Oct 14, 2010

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.

Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

Ubuntu Networking :: ICS: Connect Tethered Phone Through Vista Computer?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Verizon Droid Eris, an Android phone that has not yet been rooted. Due to the lack of root capabilities the only way to tether my phone is through PDANet for Android. Unfortunately there is no Linux version of PDANet, so the only computer I can tether my phone with is my laptop which is running Vista.

I also have a desktop running Koala, which is ultimately the computer I want to get connected. I'm hoping that there is some way I can use Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop to accomplish my goal, but I haven't had much luck so far. I don't have a crossover cable either so I would prefer to connect the laptop and the desktop via my Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error When There Is Only One Partition Of Vista On The Computer.

Jan 16, 2011

I am running vista 64x and i partitioned unbuntu 10.10 on my computer.

I deleted the ubuntu partitioned from my computer through Vista and made it all one drive. SO now all my computer has i the recovery partition which is 9.61GB and the main Vista partition that is 287.65GB. That is ALL.

I restarted my computer and it gives me the following error:

error:

I know you have answered millions of questions about that error, however the problem i have i cant find a solution for anywhere.

Now, i have a GParted disk to manage my paritions because i have had this problem before. However when i put it in the computer it only shows my 2 partitions. (The recovery one and the vista one) Both of them are "unmounted"

How do i disable grub from loading through something like GParted that is boot loaded off a disk at system startup? I only have vista on this computer, but i cant get to it because GRUB is in the way. (I do not know if its grub1 or grub 2, but its ubuntu 10.10)

I DO NOT have a recovery disk for my vista computer, ive lost it, however i have the Windows 7 Upgrade disk, but that will not load from the disk when i turn on the computer.

Fedora Installation :: Install F14 On A Computer That Has Vista On It?

trying to install F14 on a computer that has Vista on it. I chose the option for it to shrink my existing partition since it takes up the whole hard drive. On the next screen I choose my install drive... then it asks me (dont remember verbatim) by how much do I want to shrink the current partition? I put 200 (I assume its GB... is it MB?) and then it said shrink failed and then takes me back. Is that question on how much I want to shrink have to do with how much space I'm putting on the new F14 partition or how much I'm leaving on the windows partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: After 10.04 Upgrade Win Vista Does Not Boot

Jun 15, 2010

I have a similar problem to that described in the 'MBR questions (and: Windows 7 not booting with Grub2)' Thread, except that mine is with Vista and the bootinfoscript result is different.

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 on my desktop PC, running Vista from sda1 with Linux on sda6 (actually the second partition of the 320 gig master drive, there is a similar external HD that causes the high number, but its presence or absence has no effect on my problem).

On booting, a cursor flashes top left on a blank screen ( no 'Grub Loading' text) and then the grub menu shows the new 32.22 Linux options and the Windows Vista booting from sda1.

If I press enter on the Linux option the cursor flashes for 20 seconds and then boots into Ubuntu with no problems.

If I press Enter on the Windows option the cursor flashes for 3 minutes without any change, completely unresponsive to any Keyboard input. ( I have not left it any longer, I have to hit the power button to shut down.)

If I press 'e' on the Windows option the screen shows: Gnu Grub v1.98 -1ubuntu6; Ctrl-x gives a terminal with a 'GRUB>' prompt, but it does not recognise any commands I tried. The boot option shows 'Disk Boot Failure, insert System Disk and Press Enter.' Pressing Enter reverts to the Grub Menu.

Booting from a Vista recover DVD and running Startup Repair shows no error, but it still does not boot. The dvd does not give me the option to repair the MBR, but does offer a Command Prompt. Can I repair the MBR from there ? if that is what I need to do.

If so what commands should I use ?

Bootinfoscript shows Grub2 in sda0 and both sda1 and sda5 (the Recover partition) pointing to different places in neither of which is core.img to be found:

Code:

Should I remove the Grub 2 from one or more of the partitions, as described by darkod ?

My system is : Medion MD 8822 with a 2.9GHz Dual Core Intel CPU, running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, 2Gb DDR2 Ram, 320 Gb Sata HD and externally similar HD( not plugged in when these tests were done, though it was during the upgrade installation).

General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network. My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Vista After Upgrade To 10.4 / Make It Possible?

May 4, 2010

I upgraded my dual-boot (Vista/Ubuntu) system last night to 10.4. Everything had been working perfectly running karmic.

As I recall, during the upgrade process, something, I assume grub 2, asked for a list of boot devices and defaulted to selecting all devices, one of which was a non-bootable USB stick. I consented.

This returned some sort of error; I made a couple different choices selecting different drives until ultimately it accepted my choice and continued the upgrade process.

Once the upgrade completed, I could no longer boot into Vista. I now assume that one of the choices that I deselected was the dual-boot manager.

From what I can tell, all the Windows files remain intact, I just can't boot into Vista.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Vista/9.04 Dual-boot To Win7/10.10?

Dec 23, 2010

I haven't done this in a long time, so I probably just need a quick refresher on a few things. I had to revert to Vista as my primary OS for more than a year to do CAD work, but now I finally have the freedom to move back to Ubuntu. I have my Win7 upgrade that I still haven't done (yes, I know I'm late to the party) and I want to update my Ubuntu 9.04 install to 10.10.

If I remember how to do this correctly, I should upgrade Vista to Win7 first, and then install Ubuntu second. I have two separate hard drives, so each OS will go on a separate one. The only issue I had in the past is that the drive with Ubuntu on it must be set as the primary boot device, otherwise GRUB wouldn't load. Is this all correct? I've been out of the Ubuntu loop for quite a while, are there any caveats to this process that I should be aware of?

Ubuntu Installation :: Vista OS Upgrade To WIN7 But Need Dual Boot?

Jan 21, 2011

I have a pretty good grasp on general computer works and I have read alot about the dual boot system and can do it with multiple variations of linux. My problem lies within my laptop, that I want to do a dual boot on (which is my only one with wireless). It is currently running Vista Home Premium-x86 and I would like the upgrade to Windows 7 Proffessional-x64. I have access to it but I have to keep Vista as is in order to keep Windows 7 as an upgrade which will have to be a custom install. This HD is dedicated to Vista and the backup partition as it is already.

I've read just about everywhere that you first have to do Ubuntu install and partition and then Windows, which makes sence, and then change the GRUB. However, I'm unsure about this case.

What would be the best way of going about making the partitioning scheme? I've already backed up everything possible so loosing that info is not the problem. Vista is the problem. My HD is a toshiba 320gbs- 2.5" form factor. My plan was to make 3 partitions. Windows, Ubuntu, and then the back up partion for Windows. I wanted to allocate Windows 150gb, Ubuntu 150gb, and then the other 20gb as back up for Windows.
