Ubuntu :: Choices Offered For Partitioning - No Swap Offered?

Apr 3, 2010

During the installation of Ubuntu 9.04, a user is offered two partitioning choices at the appropriate step. The first is to allow Ubuntu to use ALL the unallocated disc space (I do a "clean install") to automatically form three partitions which are 1) / root, 2) /swap and finally 3) ?, sorry, can't remember what the third partition is for - probably the distro itself taking up the remaining unallocated/free disc space. I do NOT have any version of Windows installed as an OS and refuse to! My hdd is a single 160GB SATA one.

My problem comes with the Partition Table (?) with the Manual option chosen that has a drop-down list with different partitions to choose, but NO Swap partition listed!! This makes absolutely no sense to me at all.If I choose all the other partition table allows and complete the install steps, I immediately get an error message stating that no swap partition has been created (no kidding, how am I supposed to at the manual partitioning step if it isn't even listed??!! The error message also pointedly tells me to immediately create a swap space before continuing and completing the Ubuntu installation.I don't have any idea what is going on,that leads to a solution which allows me to do a manual installation of Ubuntu 9.04 (which I quickly upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 along with the necessary security plugins or patches) with enough unallocated space left for a dual-boot system later on, adding Mint 10 as a second Linux distro/OS

Server :: Index.php - On Server - Offered For Download Rather Than Being Interpreted?

Jan 18, 2010

I have SLES10 SP3 with Apache2 in version 2.2.3 and php5.

I have a virtual host configuration with one vhost.

The /etc/apache2/listen.conf:

Code:

In _web-ims.conf:

Code:

This directory (/etc/apache2/conf.d) also contains the php-config-file php5.conf which now gets interpreted (I suppose):

Code:

Actually things are working OK.

However, ON THE SERVER php only gets interpreted by the FireFox browser when called upon localhost:
[url] //Works fine.

When called thru the IP:

BUT when I call
[url]

FROM ANOTHER CLIENT-COMPUTER, for example my windows computer with XP, using Internet Explorer, then it works!

So, does s.o. have any idea why the same call that does work on another client does not work on the Server? And why does the call with localhost on the server work?

Is that a bug in the FireFox-Browser or where do I have to tell him that he should interpret the php-code also from the IP and not only from loccalhost?

Ubuntu :: Partitioning - Adjust Swap Space?

Mar 11, 2010

I'm a first time installer of Ubuntu. I've run it directly from CD a few times earlier, but I'm installing it from the CD for the first time. I've read some stuff about this from other sites, and have some doubts I hope you geniuses would be able to clarify. Situation : My 80GB Primary HDD is partitioned into what I think is 1 Primary partition [10GB] and 1 extended partition [70GB] which is further divided into three logical partitions.

I don't have to worry about other data, since I've got a 320GB External HDD for that. Now, Ubuntu says that it can squeeze the free space out of the Windows Partition. But my Windows partition is pretty full, and I don't want to re-install it on a larger partition. I've got one logical drive [20GB] free on my Primary HDD. Can it be converted into a primary partition without affecting anything else i.e. my Windows partition and the other two logical partitions remain intact ? Or do I have to format my extended partition and subdivide into a primary and extended partition ?

Q2 - How do I adjust swap space ? Does it have to be a primary partition ? Or can it be a logical partition ? To make a logical partition swap space, do I have to reformat my entire extended partition to squeeze out free space, or can it be kept intact? I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron. I know it's a lot to read, but I'm pretty confused right now.

I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?

Ubuntu :: Swap Or Swap File On Flash Memory?

Aug 16, 2010

RAM for older machines like I use is fairly cheap these days. But flash memory is just as cheap or cheaper. So I'd like to ask about the feasibility of expanding my system's memory using flash memory. And about whether creating a partition for swap on the flash memory, or whether a swap file on the flash device, is the better way to go.

By flash memory I have in mind mainly USB sticks or what are sometimes called "pen drives." But I do also have CF and SD cards that, with the proper cheap adapter (one of which I already own for adapting CF) could be used to create extra swap space. So, what is the current consensus on the feasibility/advisability of using flash memory for swap? I've read about the limited write cycles of flash being an argument against using it for swap. But recent reading indicates to me that the limited write cycles problem applies mostly to older, smaller-capacity flash memory. Some will come out and say that, for larger-capacity flash memory, the life of the device is likely to exceed the amount of time your current computer will be useful (I think I've seen estimates in the range of 3-4 years life--minimum--for newer, higher-capacity flash memory).

A more persuasive argument I've heard against using flash memory for swap is that access times for these devices can be much slower than SATA, and maybe even IDE, hard drives. That would certainly dictate against using flash memory for swap.

So, how about some input on this issue? Anyone using flash memory for swap? If so, what kind (e.g., usb stick or SD/CF)? Are you using a swap file or a swap partition? How's system performance? Likewise, has anyone had flash-memory-used-as-swap die on them? The consequences would undoubtedly be dire. Also, has anyone measured flash memory access times to confirm or refute claims about slow access times? Are some types of flash memory better/worse than others in terms of access times?

Dec 13, 2010

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1243cl laptop. It has an internal wifi that works ok at home but when I'm traveling I stay at RV Campgrounds the wifi signal gets pretty weak. So I Installed an external antenna.(ALFA model AWUS036H). The signal gets a full 5 bars.

Now the problem. I dual boot OS11.3 and Windows 7 pro. Everything works as expected on MS. When In boot to OS11.3 I can only connect to the internal antenna. (real spotty). If I turn off the internal antenna I can't connect to the external one. Knetwork manager show/detects and shows the strength of both of the signals only when the internal is on. On MS7 I can turn off the internal and it will connect to the external one with no problem. Is there anyway to get OS to allow me to connect to my choice of antenna? I've been into manage connections and selected wlan1 (external). no joy.
