Fedora :: Only One Option For Screen Resolutions - No Choices
Aug 25, 2009
I am currently using fc11, the problem is that i only have one desktop screen resolution to select which is 1280x800 under my System>Preferences>Display. I am actually wanted more options of screen resolutions just like in Windows. I am using laptop Dell Vostro1400 with Intel card.

I'm fairly new to Fedora. I am using F14, on a brand new laptop. The LCD screen needs to be matched with a 16:9 ratio, or it stretches everything out. Unfortunately F14 only comes offering three options... none of which are 16:9. Is there an easy way for me to add a 16:9 ratio to my display settings? Does it matter that I am running in low graphics mode?..... it's the only way the liveCd would install.

I use a 17" laptop with a 22" secondary monitor running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The res on the laptop screen is 1440x900 (16:10) and the secondary monitor mirrors this. Problem is that because the secondary monitor aspect ratio the display is somewhat distorted. It's not so bad that it is unreadable but I work in IT so I am at my computer for around 8hours a day so it wear thin after a while.
Is there a way for me to set different resolutions on each screen? The laptop have an ATI Radeon Graphics card and cannot change the Resolution above 1440x900 even within ATI Catlyst control center.

Linux Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic), Nvidia g-force 5200, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz(old PC but i need learn Linux inside out b4 I go 100% Linux)But I have taken the time to the learn the basic cmds like man mv cp apt-get install etc. I cisco engineer but I want to get good with Linux distro's.I have a NVIDIA G-FORCE 5200 which according to NVIDIA'S website the 173.14.x.x driver is the correct one.I have tried diver 173.14xx. I installed it manually and restarted x server.
I have read the installation guides on this forum but to no avail.When I reboot Compiz cube features are working BUT my screen goes 640x350.I tried to edit the /etc/X11/ xorg. conf file but I cant see any screen resolutions lines. I tried changing NV to nvidia and visa versa. Still the screen is buggered.I installed compiz checker and ran it it said all ok. My text goes large the colours are jittery ? When I go to NVIDIA XSERVER SETTINGS i can not change the screen res ? It just stops from selecting the options? I also tried driver 185.18xx and the same results.I also tried installing the drivers with Envy NG and still no better.I now have installed 96.43.13 NVIDIA driver and my screen has went back to normal but I can not enable the cube effects. I take this means it has reverted back to the graphics card on the motherboard? I have also looked at xrandr -s <1014x768> cmd to manually change it and again no avail.

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, I find that I can not successfully set the screen resolution of an external monitor to 1280x1024, for instance. The screen draws blocks of graphics in strange places & doesn't seem to erase properly. This screen resolution worked in 10.10, as did all the display options. However, now that I've upgraded only resolutions of 1024x768 & lower work OK. Is this is a bug in 11.04? My hardware: Dell Inspiron Mini 10v, Intel Atom CPU N270 1.60GHz, 1GB RAM

I generally suspend between work sessions. Occasionally, after a long time of running, my display goes black and is unresponsive. This seems to happen when I have fallen asleep while working. Now, I don't think someone has sneaked in and done something to my computer! Anyway, all the applications are still running (observed by bringing up the console, top/ps) but the X session does not respond. I have tried the Control-Alt-Backspace keystroke that is suggested for restarting X Window.
Over several times, I have experimented with killing specific processes from the console to see if I could restore life to the session, without having to shutdown. Today I noted that if I blast the compiz process it did come back. Of course, there may well be a specific combination of steps I did before that step that resulted in it working.

There are only two selectable resolutions, both are way to small. How can I get additional larger screen resolutions?

One day, when I switched on my notebook Lenovo X400 with Suse 11.3 I observed that the graphical login screen is divided vertically into two equal parts - each in different resolution. There are also two mouse pointers. They work simultaously (eventhought I can see only a half of each). The problem is that when I login there is no effect, it goes back to login screen. I can login into text terminal. But if I go to "init 3" I still can not startx and the next time I reboot the same problem comes again. Shall I somehow reconfigure X windows or method of logging in?

I have 2 screens connected by vga/dvi and need to use different resolutions...at the minute ubuntu is forcing the same for both. Where should I start looking. I have two video files recorded simultaneously. I want to edit them into one video file with non-standard resolution and a split screen view which, two videos can be seen together. I tried kdenlive but I was unable to change the output resolution.

I installed Natty on a 5-year-old Compaq with an integrated Intel 8xx chipset, using a Polaroid TLA-01511C monitor, and the list of available resolutions varies quite a bit each time I boot. Sometimes it will only give me 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480; sometimes it gives me a dozen resolutions ranging up to 1600x1200. Only once has it ever offered me the monitor's native resolution, 1280x800.
I'm guessing the EDID is being missent or misread each time. How can I set it to (ignore the EDID and) allow me to select 1280x800 each time? I did notice that when it was a Windows machine, it would give me the short list of resolutions when booted with the monitor off, but gave more options when booted with the monitor on. Here though, it seems to give the long list when booted with monitor off.
Here's my most current /var/log/Xorg.0.log; this time it booted with about a dozen modes available, but not 1280x800.

I have a standard F15 installation with Gnome 3 from the live CD. I got bored and decided to play with a few other WMs and DEs. I installed KDE-base, but KDE does not appear as an option at login. Is there something else I need to install? XFCE, Openbox, and Classic Gnome with Compiz all appear in the menu. KDE does not.

I am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.
Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset
However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.

I have a problem with Plymouth. It works pretty well on low res, but on higher resolution some strange video artefacts appear - see attachments.
I use ATI proprietary drivers, if it has something to do with it.
The resolution is set in /etc/default/grub like this:
Code:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768x32
edit: reducing colour depth doesn't help /end edit
I don't know whether it has anything to do with the current problem, but Plymouth used not to appear at all until I followed these instructions (or actually I took them from another thread but I can't find it at the moment and these are the same).
I don't know whether it's possible to take them during booting so I've taken these photos with a mobile and retouched in gimp to remove reflections (more or less), and since I'm no pro photographer nor photoshop/gimp master they look as they look. They should do to demonstrate the problem, though.

I'm looking for some simple to use photo editing software for KDE. I don't really need the GIMP. I just want to do some simple auto-enhancement, rotating, and resizing. Pretty simple stuff. I'm trying to install Shotwell right now. I've used it on Gnome installs, (Ubuntu refugee), but I was wondering if there is a similar native KDE application.

I'm using an HP 2009m 20" widescreen monitor, and have a Nvidia 8500gt video card. Latest Nvidia drivers from RPM Fusion are installed.
My problem is that the only widescreen resolution I have a choice of in both nvidia-settings and gnome's "Display preferences," is 1600x900. While this is fine for desktop apps, my video card doesn't handle games very well at that resolution.
So, I know my card and monitor are capable of displaying other widescreen resolutions (such as 1360x768) because they work in Windows 7, but Fedora doesn't give me the choice of selecting them.
Is there a file that Fedora uses to determine the supported resolutions? How would I be able to select resolutions that I know are supported (at least in Windows 7)? Can editing xorg.conf give me this ability?
I just looked in my xorg.conf, and it's surprisingly slim compared to others I've seen.

I have two identical machines. I updated one (yum update), and now I can't view the display when it boots up; however, I can ssh into it. I'm pretty sure it's a resolution display issue on a KVM connected to the machines.
Years ago, I could view and change the default resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Now, it appears that information has been moved to another location.
My xorg.conf on the working and non-working machines is the same:
Code:
Nothing is mentioned about a resolution setting. Everything I google says to modify this file. Does anyone know where the default resolution settings are stored these days?
