I have noticed when using Synaptic the user can point the search function to "Look In" description && name, dependencies, version etc. Can I search through a particular Section? E.g. I want to filter out all results from all sections except System Administration...
P.S. searching LQ reveals the nearest newest post, that may have never been resolved.
Open synaptic. Type in the word "Game". Then you have to scroll down through the list of results and mark each one, individually. Is there any way that I can simply mark ALL the results of the search? There is an "Unmark all" button. Can we get a "Mark all" button? It would have to mark only those packages that currently appear in the right hand box.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
How can I use grep to search for line with either 'res' or 'rep'? i try "grep -e res|rep" or gre -e "rep|rep" but that does not work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
I'm looking for some simple to use photo editing software for KDE. I don't really need the GIMP. I just want to do some simple auto-enhancement, rotating, and resizing. Pretty simple stuff. I'm trying to install Shotwell right now. I've used it on Gnome installs, (Ubuntu refugee), but I was wondering if there is a similar native KDE application.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can not get Guidance to remember my choices past the first suspend. I open Guidance from the battery icon on my screen and select "Suspend" from the "lid closed" option list. I click OK (or apply then OK) and my choice is remember right until I close the lid and restart. If I don't go through the process again random events occur when I resume the second time. I am a member of the power group, this was working perfectly on 4.4.2 and previous. Is there a text file I can edit to fix this properly instead of all the clicky-clicky I'm not listening nonsense?

View 5 Replies View RelatedNew to Debian I installed ABCDE for ripping my CDs. My question is stupid but I could not sort this situation even going through the web or documentation. It works fine now BUT... when ABCDE retrieve multiple playlists (#1, #2, #3, etc.) it show them then ends with (END) blinking at the bottom of the terminal. If I make a RETURN I get nothing. If I type EXIT it shows "No next tag (press RETURN)" but RETURN has no effect !
When there is only ONE playlist (or no playlist available to retrieve) it works really fine.ce.
When I boot from the CD I don't get the normal choices to install. The only 2 choices I get are;
"Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" and
"Live-Install"
I click on Live-install, and I get a boot loader box that has live-install in it and a OK click box i click ok and nothing happens.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I would like to specify that the computer get's put to sleep, after being inactive for 4 hours. The choices on the drop down are 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours and never.Is there an easy way to modify or add additional choices to the list? This would allow me to easily switch between them, if necessary.If not, what would I need to modify behind the scenes, to set this value to 4 hours?

I use Squeeze and when I right-clic on a file there is a lot of clutter in the contextual menu. I want to remove some of these choices (send the file to someone, sign this file, encrypt this file, etc).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion dv7-1243cl laptop. It has an internal wifi that works ok at home but when I'm traveling I stay at RV Campgrounds the wifi signal gets pretty weak. So I Installed an external antenna.(ALFA model AWUS036H). The signal gets a full 5 bars.
Now the problem. I dual boot OS11.3 and Windows 7 pro. Everything works as expected on MS. When In boot to OS11.3 I can only connect to the internal antenna. (real spotty). If I turn off the internal antenna I can't connect to the external one. Knetwork manager show/detects and shows the strength of both of the signals only when the internal is on. On MS7 I can turn off the internal and it will connect to the external one with no problem. Is there anyway to get OS to allow me to connect to my choice of antenna? I've been into manage connections and selected wlan1 (external). no joy.

I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages.What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?

When I boot via the Ubuntu 10.10 CD I am presented with two choices : install Linux to SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) using the entire disk, or to SCSI2 (0,0,0) (sdb) with 50% of the disk designated as Files and the other 50% designated as Ubuntu. Rather than having a list of different continents to choose from, I can only select places in Africa. That doesn't help much considering I am half a world away. I have a laptop also, and Weather Report works just fine on it. My desktop is the only machine with the problem.

In the same room I have a second computer that I use purely for trialing Linux distributions, It currently has Debian, gNewSense and Kubuntu on it with Grub to choose between. This computer has no keyboard / mouse / monitor, but it has directly wired ethernet to the home network. Is there any way I can set it to be remotely controlled from before / during grub so I can choose from the other computer which to run? I realise I can just crawl behind the desk and unplug the keyboard / mouse / monitor, but I don't particularly want to every time I reboot into a different distro. I also realise that remote access during boot is a security risk so is there a way of allowing only one MAC address to do the controlling?
