Apr 5, 2011On the website that Ubuntu provides for installing additional themes, when I download a "Login Screen" from the website it just downloads as a bunch of JPGs and backups. The downloads are just folders filled with them. I've been wanting to customise the appearance of my Ubuntu, and I want to know how I can make these login screen actually appear when I turn on my computer and login to Ubuntu.

Jun 18, 2011When I upgraded to 11.04 and decided to give Gnome 3 a chance I was stuck with a windows 2000 (or Redmond like) theme. I have since been able to change the theme in the desktop environment however the Login Screen still maintains the Windows 2000 like theme. I have extensively Googled how to change this, but I keep coming up empty handed. Does anyone have any ideas of how to change the Login Screen theme.

Step 4: In this directory rename the current (system-ready.ogg) file to (system-ready.ogg.backup)

Jul 17, 2010I just installed Squeeze because Lenny didn't have the best Bluetooth support. (Just installed blueman and everything I have works without any configuring, by the way). In Lenny, gdmsetup would allow me to choose a theme for the login screen as well as change settings for logging in. With Squeeze, fully updated, I only get a couple simple options for changing automatic login (screen shot of gdmsetup).
There is a config file that I found: Code: /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults It is a simple config file but I do not know the available themes and cannot preview them.

May 4, 2010I have been searching this forum and google extensively for the last few hours, and I cant dig up anything useful. I have a very weird problem:
Install Fedora 12 from livecd on a widescreen monitor:
- Using Nvidia 96xx drivers for my Gforce2 MX
Everything runs fine at this point. Connect old 17" flatscreen and no network: Login freezes for about a minute after username selection, no password prompt, no mouse movement, no keyboard response, after timeout I return to login screen before username selection .. and can repeat this or.. At that point (or before that point) I can ctrl+alt F2 to 'terminal' screen, login works fine.
init 3, login as root
startx
Works fine then, resolution is %^# tho, and cant change it at that point due to errors I get. I'm convinced the problem has nothing to do with my X configuration tbh. Booting from the LiveCD on this configuration works fine. I am tempted to think it has something to do with my GDM, but as my knowledge is limited, I cant figure it out. If I reconnect the widescreen, it all works fine ...

Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Sep 17, 2010I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Dec 22, 2008I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

Jul 6, 2010Last night I had rebooted my machine and when it came back up it would no longer accept my password. My 7 year old son had been playing on the machine earlier so I assumed he inadvertently reset my password to something else. I rebooted again, added the rw init=/bin/bash was able to get in and reset my password. That worked, I was able to access with no problem. I was able to perform admin tasks, it would prompt for password and accept the password. I just went to edit a config file and all of a sudden it is no longer accepting my password again and (my son has been no where near it)?!!?
I am not even sure where to start troubleshooting this - I know I can reboot and reset the password again - but is there a way to figure out how this is happening.

Oct 12, 2010I don't like the username/password default screen, but i like the ones in /usr/share/backgrounds. I've been trying to change it for few hours. None of the advices on The Net work. I tried:
1) gconf-editor and /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image gconf-editor /schemas/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image I set it to picture file path, or splash/filename.png or even copied the desired picture to /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png - no changes
2) gdmsetup has no such option for me
3) also installed startupmanager - nothing as well.

I thought, and installed it through the Software Centre on my 10.04 laptop. I washoping/expecting that xfce would then become an option in the Sessions pulldown at log-on, but no such luck. What should I be doing? It is not my intention to switch to xubuntu, just to take another look at an alternative window manager.

Aug 18, 2010I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
