Ubuntu :: Boot Splash Screen With Purple Background
Feb 10, 2011I switched back to my ubuntu installation few hours ago and I couldn't notice the strange boot screen! I remember that it used to be orange, there was the ubuntu logo and a nice loading bar. All is displayed now is a horrible purple background with just the text "Ubuntu" in the middle and a few dots just below it, showing the loading process.. I don't know how to restore the classic splash screen (I also found the original background in /usr/share/images/xsplash ).

After upgrade, boot only gave me a blank, purple screen, so I used his revert script then tried this : [URL]
But I'm only getting a black screen. Removing vga=795 option only make it stay purple. It might be because of the multiples workarounds I tried back in 10.10, but I don't know how to clean that up. I have an ATI HD Radeon Pro 2400 card with free drivers (but I was using the proprietary ones during upgrade).

Feb 1, 2011I am having problems installing Ubuntu netbook 10.10 from a USB drive.
I have a Lenovo ideapad S10-3 with Win 7 Starter.
I have tried two different USB drives, one is unidentifiable, the other is a Kingston.
I have used Pendrive and Unetbootin on both.
I have tried formatting the drives to FAT32 from both the Pendrive option and from Win7's default formatting software.
I downloaded the iso from the Ubuntu website torrent, and I did an md5 check to make sure that the file matched up.
When I boot from USB, the purple screen comes up briefly, and after two seconds changes to a black, terminal screen on which a bunch of text scrolls and then it eventually freezes. When I click a button, the menus pop up, and when I click on either "install" or "run from usb drive," the same terminal thing happens. Someone recommended that I try installing from that screen after changing the f6 options to nomodeset, noapci (I think), and acpi=off. (I cannot remember the exact lettering, but they were options on that f6 menu.) None of these changed the result.
With the Kingston, the line that it freezes on in the terminal is:
[6.548159] USB Mass Storage support registered.
With both drives, when I use the Unetbootin install, the menu comes up, and when I click on either the 'run' or 'boot' options, the cursor in the bottom left of the screen keeps flashing but no progress. (No terminal-like screen with this one.) It is different with the other drive. How to proceed from here?

Dec 16, 2010Yesterday I booted into the Ubuntu 10.10 CD, and hit the Try Ubuntu button. Ubuntu booted fine from the CD, and after trying it for a few minutes, I decided to install it.
I already had (and still have) Windows 7 installed, so, using the Ubuntu Installer, I shrinked the C (system) partition of Windows by roughly 14 GBs. 10 of which used for Ubuntu itself, and the other 4 as Swap Area.
Installation went fine, and I was asked to reboot - and so I did. However, upon restarting, I was 'welcomed' by a stuck, purple splash screen. So I used Recovery Mode, and updated my Ubuntu. That didn't change anything. I rebooted, started Ubuntu without the "splash quiet" commands, and instead used the "nomodeset" command. I logged in my Ubuntu user, and ran the StartX command. It didn't work, and I was given a few errors, including "no screen found", "Fatal server error", and something along the lines of "no NVIDIA module found (...,0)".
So what's wrong with the NVIDIA driver, really?
General :: Ubuntu Purple Splash Screen With Blinking Pixels?
Apr 4, 2010I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot).
Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time)
After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem)
Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system > admnistration > hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related)
I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. [URL]

May 10, 2011Ok so just updated 10.10 to 11 and I can't do anything, the desktop is continuously flickering the purple ubuntu splash screen behind it and if I click anything it will open but flashaswell, I did have nova desktop which changes my wallpaper automatically but I uninstalled it as I thought that may be thebprovlem
Is there anything I can do? Or will I have to copy the home folder to USB and then do a clean install?

Aug 3, 2011I have a Dell dimension 8300 dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I installed BURG on it since I didnt like the text grub style. Problem is I cant change the splash screen no matter what I do, or changes I make. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my video card is an Nvidia card.
Originally the splash screen was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and some dots on it. After installing the plymouth themes, now it has changed to a blue screen with Kubuntu(?) on it... Id like to know whats wrong and how can I change the splash screen?
UPDATE: Ok I went to synaptic and saw plymouth.kubuntu-logo and kubuntu-text were installed and enabled (had litle ubuntu logo to the side). So I removed those 2 files then did a reboot. Now im back to the purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and the dots but I still cant change the splash screen...

Debian :: Cannot Change Back To Basic Blue Grub Boot Splash?
Dec 17, 2010I get the new boot splash with the nice little rocket and all but I seriously dislike it. While I don't stare at my computer as it boots, I do happen to see it from time to time. Unfortunately, I always see this new little rocket and I wonder where my traditional Debian blue with the swirl went. Yes, I know I am using Grub-Pc now, and I have tried to edit my /etc/grub.d file by renaming the wallpaper line to my preference.
But all my config file sees is "background-grub.png" which is the little rocket ship. So, I give. What is the secret code to unlock my grub config file or do I seriously have to muck around with Plymouth in order to have a choice in the matter? Just for those of you who contemplate counseling me on better time management instead of wasting my precious time over such a silly little thing, I agree. Not to mention that I use Debian because I like to build my system.

May 5, 2010I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.

But always it's black with a cursor twinkling before the splash comes out.And in fact it holds most of the boot time in the black screen.When splash comes out it just exists less than one second and immediately goes to the login window.
Though ubuntu lucid is very very wonderful now , i want it to be better .

Jul 21, 2011I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.

Dec 8, 2010i am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.

Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.

Apr 3, 2011when I install them all goes well but when I get into the GUIs I can hardly press anything - major bug with mouse and it is really annoying. Secondly there is a big gap between the GUI and my screen's edge. Hmm, I think - it must be a problem with the GPU driver and that might be the thing also messing with the mouse clicks. I download the drivers provided by the Ubuntu community - all goes well and I restart - stuck at purple screen after the "moving dots" on boot. So I reinstall the whole OS and try with the drivers provided by NVIDIA - same thing. I try the same procedure with Kubuntu and no progress.

This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.

Jul 17, 2011Every once in a while when I turn on my computer it freezes on the purple screen after the screen where you choose the operating system. When this happens the keyboard doesn't work and I have to hold the power button. Also I think this might be connected to the problem I had when I was running ubuntu from the live cd, which was freezing after choosing the option of "trying" the OS before installing. I'm using an HP Dv7-3112sa and am running the default 64bit ubuntu from the website.
