Ubuntu :: Booting - Black Screen And Error (initlymouth-splash Main Process(856) Terminated With Status 1)
Jul 1, 2010
When i boot my pc there is a black screen and then a message appears (initlymouth-splash main process(856) terminated with status 1) Some other times only this appears '' _ '' blinking (i don't remember how it is called in english, sorry) I hold Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then the screen where i choose profile comes up. I have 10.04 since they came out,and didn't have any problem except one issue with my belkin adaptor, but now i can't sync my iphone with rhythmbox or detect any flash sticks.

I installed Lucid Lynx on my laptop a couple of months ago and for the most part everything was working fine. However, just recently the computer doesn't seem to be booting up at all. I start up the machine and then a black screen appears with the text: init: ureadahead main process (306) terminated with status 5 the (#) is different in some boot-ups
And the computer just hangs there. typing anything doesn't seem to help at all. I press enter and a new line just appears. I've left it there for hours and still no login screen.

Quote: init: ureadahead main process (274) terminated with status 59 Starting up... There is a blinking cursor under the 'S' in Starting. It doesn't boot or respond to any escape combinations that I know. Several retries have yielded the same screen. I read the original post and a few comments here about ureadahead, but did not find anything related to my problem.

Code: init: ureadahead main process (423) terminated with status 5 Ubuntu 10.10 lorentz tty1
lorentz login: The first line of the above shows up during boot before the display goes graphical. I can see it again (all of the above) when I Ctrl+Alt+F1 to access the first text console. Anyone know what is causing this, what problems can happen as a result, and what should be done about it? I moved from 9.10 on one machine to 10.10 on a new machine, so I don't know if it's a hardware problem or software. I am running 64-bit. I am not really seeing any problems happening besides the few scattered application and GUI glitches that are common with a new/migrated setup.

I keep getting this message as the first thing I see when I boot up. Afterwards, it displays the ubuntu logo and dots under it and then the screen blacks out, but the display lights act like its OK (wireless ETC). should I use a boot CD or something? The hard drive is fine and this happened after the computer blacked out during updates. i scanned the hard drive and its OK, according to the little scan thing you can do before booting up. I have a Compaq Presario V200. For specs, thats all I know.

I installed slackware 12.1 from files i downloaded and converted to cd (images). There are six "disks" i downloaded from the slackware site and converted to images via a homemade .cmd in windows xp and then burned using imgburn.
I partitioned my hd (canibalized from an acquaintance's emachine and connected it to my desktop (1G ram, 2Ghz processor). Booted from disk 1 and fomatted the 80G HD for 2 partitions of linuxswapable at 2G apeice and 2 partitions of bootable linux. (Because i want to try another distro later). I ran the setup installing most everything and all seemed to go well. After i exited setup and restarted, it identifed the cd/hd as normal and then went into some sort of recovery mode with the emachine logo call pcangel, after which it tells me.
STOP: c0000021a (fatal system error) The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). the system has been shut down. So, is this indeed an xp error message, and if so, why am i getting it after formatting everything?

I had been having problems with every LiveCD after 8.04.1 I tried both xubuntu and ubuntu (same internals, same results)
I ended up installing xubuntu 10.4 using the text mode installer.
The system basically works, I can not get gdm running.
dbus fails as noted above. I found launchpad bug #446971 and tried some of the work arounds with no success.
The system is an old eMachines T1120

Can't seem to get past this error Doing a google search resulted with no good answers that pertained to this issue. Not sure what's halting the system from starting up, but it just sits and hangs at this forever. Only able to view the error when booting into single user mode - normal boot hangs after "enabling /etc/fstab swaps: [OK]"

I think it should be that the splash comes out immediately after one click ubuntu to boot in grub. just like that in windows....
But always it's black with a cursor twinkling before the splash comes out.And in fact it holds most of the boot time in the black screen. When splash comes out it just exists less than one second and immediately goes to the login window.
Though ubuntu lucid is very very wonderful now , i want it to be better .

I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

I booted up my laptop and the boot sequence got stuck at the boot splash screen (plymouth). I did an esc and I saw a failure message, the error I remember in my panic mode is: fsck terminated with status 8
I rebooted, got the same message. Rebooted again and this time, to my relief, it worked.
1) What happened, should I be concerned? Not sure why it worked after 2 reboots.
2) Is there a possibility this could happen again?
3) Are there any boot log files I could look at?
4) Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or a check of some sort?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. No dual boot. The disk is partitioned and I've got my /home folder on the other partition for situations like this.

The new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...
Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.

New install on Compaq Presario F700 (F756NR)The install went fine. I was able to get the Nvidia drivers working too. The problem I have is when the system boots. I get the OpenSuse splash screen, and the system just hangs.I found that if I press <Esc> and hit <Enter> a few times, the system will eventually boot. I also found if I wiggle the mouse during the splash screen, the progress bar will begin to move, and the system will boot.Seems to be something about detecting hardware during the boot phase, and it seems to be input related.
