OpenSUSE Install :: Clean Install To Repair System?

Jan 21, 2010

I was trying to upgrade to 11.2 from 11.1 by upgrading the OS online. However my internet connection failed and the upgrade has now messed up my system. I have a dual-boot system with Windows XP and I'm wondering if it would be OK in getting the DVD and selecting update? Or do I have to change the boot log etc?

I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 (WIN7 TOO) and changed my Larger HD1 to the first HD. I continued with the install and then got:

OpenSUSE Install :: Repair System Without DVD?

Jan 6, 2010

My system got stuffed after a trivial online update, it downloaded a new kernel update, I rebooted and now it won't boot at all saying "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop/modules.dep: No such file or directory", then some stuff, then "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'", "could not mount root filesystem"... It's on my laptop without a DVD drive and I've only got a LiveCD USB stick which doesn't have a YAST system repair tool. Is there any way to repair a system without a DVD drive?

Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 : DVD Menu Missing Repair Tools For The Installed System

Jul 17, 2010

It used to be that the dvd menu offered an option to "repair the installed system". THis was really very convenient. The openSUSE 11.3 dvd for x86 now only gives a "system rescue" option which leads to command line directl. Where have been "the repair the installed system" tools? How can we access them now? What is a reasonable set of tips that's supposed to be used after logging into "system rescue"?

OpenSUSE Install :: Clean Up The System - Is This An Impossible Task?

Aug 11, 2010

Upon boot up, I get lots of new lines added to log files in /var/log concerning apparent problems during boot up. The boot sequence does attempt to show the failure or success during each step as it transitions to the final run level, but is there a good manual or procedure on how to fix each transition, so as to cut down on the amount of pesky warning or error messages?

I am a bit concerned that running a system with warning messages is a bit like running a car low on oil. In the past the goal was to have a perfectly running linux system that came up all the way, and yes, I have seen such. This meant knowing how kernel things work, etc, but still, I would think we would want to pay attention to such things as

[ 1127.997470] ALSA usbaudio.c:1274: 2:1:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x1
[ 894.166132] isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

and others and work to bring them to a minimum.

Right now I am working on things piecemeal as I go along, and it will take a lot of time.

I didn't dump the 10K's of log files into this message forum, in case someone asks to see the details, but I am just striving to have the system come up clean, and not with a message like:

Warning: Skipped 98 probes

(whatever that means?? did the kernel just mean that it knew that it is supposed to check 98 things but failed? or that 98 things should have gotten checked but didn't?)

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Log In File-system Is Full / Clean Up Any Unnecessary Files?

Nov 24, 2010

I can't login due to my file-system being full. I found the main area with the large usage. Var/log is taking 99.5% of my var folder. On a full file-system scan Var/log is taking up 85% of disk use. File-system capacity is 36 gig. Temp is cleared after each boot.

What can I do to clean up any unnecessary files. I can only boot in safe mode and have limited navigation skills. To get scan results I booted a live-disc.

Opensuse 11.2 gnome 64 bit.

OpenSUSE Install :: Option "Repair System" Does Not Exist In 11.3

Sep 23, 2010

Turns out I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 DVD Full and well, I see that in the boot options, I do not see the option "Repair System", only:

"Install"
"Booting from Hard Disk"
"Verify installation media"
"Firmware Test"
"Test Hardware"

No more, and I see that everyone leaves the option, as in version 11.2, to "System Restore / Repair System" Is there any way to get it? I need to repair GRUB, as I appear, I had it in a logical partition and therefore I have GRUB errors, since the re-installation of windows and then deleting it, I thought of this. Any way to get this option by the Live CD or what? Is it a BUG in version 11.3?

OpenSUSE Install :: Two Boot Flags Showing On Clean Install?

Oct 24, 2010

There are several posts here about not being able to boot without the install disk, which is also my case. I imagine the solution for me should be easy, because I only have a single installed OS on this machine, which is a MacBook Pro 2.1. Here's the result of fdisk -l:

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Partition table entries are not in disk order sda4 is a partition that did not appear in the partition overview when I installed the operating system. I thought I'd look for help here while I continue to research the problem myself.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Clean Install Will Not Boot Past Splash?

May 18, 2011

I just switched back to openSUSE from Fedora linux. I made a clean install of openSUSE 11.4, but had trouble when installing the boot loader. For whatever reason the auto-partition tool hadn't given me a /boot partition even though the GRUB configuration referenced it. So I switched the / partition to /boot and the /home to / and now I don't have a /home partition. Is this why my system won't boot past the splash screen in "normal" mode, but boots fine in "failsafe"?

The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes

OpenSUSE Install :: Clean Install Of 11.2 On Thinkpad

Dec 16, 2009

I did try to do an update from 11.1, but that killed the thing dead, no x, no kde, just a command line log in.So clean install, leave /home alone and we seem to be firing on all cylinders, except.Hopeless networkmanager still will not connect, it hasn't in any version of K4, truly, from my point of view, an embarrassment as the default network connector. But, trying to re-install WICD I have run into a snag. When I click on one click in Webpin, it asked if it should install it, Oh yes please, asks for the su password and. opens konqueror with the background description of the RPM. But will not install. I tried downloading the RPM and it gives me a bit of a list of dependency problems. None of which I can seem to resolve through the usual repos. Also in the 11.2 install I have been defaulted to the "desktop" kernel, when I used to have a PAE, should I change the kernel to PAE?

Fedora :: First Yum Update On Clean Install Crashes System

Apr 15, 2010

I was using Fedora 9 until about 1 month ago when my hard drive crashed. I installed F12 on a new hard drive last week. Due to some other software issues (empathy), I decided I should try to get the latest updates. PackageKit kept giving errors and would not update. So, I researched and found that I needed to run " su -c 'yum update' " for the first update then PackageKit would work. I did this and after about an hour of updating, the screen went black. Nothing you can do at that point but hard reboot.

When I did that, I could only get a "GRUB" command line. I played with it for a minute but really I have no idea what to do with GRUB cmd (beyond my experience level). So I decided to wipe it out and reinstall F12. I did that, and was just working thru the updates again. Same thing happened, went to black screen. I have not rebooted it yet, but Im sure when I do, it will be GRUB again. What in the world am I supposed to do with this? I am not a Linux star, but I have been using it for around 8 years now with various distros, so I would say I have at least moderate experience.

Ubuntu :: Clean 10.10 Install Successful - But System Sometimes Freezes

Oct 20, 2010

After 8 years of using Mac, which I do enjoy, I decided to jump into the open source community. So I bought a brand new Thinkpad SL510 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) using the entire disk, thus erasing Windows.

The installation process was very easy and the system generally works great. It's fast and I love the interface.

Just encountered one annoying issue which I don't think I should be confronted with, using a freshly installed Unix-based OS: a few times, the system entirely froze. I couldn't move the mouse pointer anymore, the keyboard no longer responded (eg. when hitting Shift Lock the light didn't come on). Waited for several minutes but nothing happened at all. So I had to turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.

This has only happened a few times so far, but a few times too many. When it happened, I only had Firefox open, or Firefox and Twinkle. The last time it happened, the screen colours gradually went gray before everything came to a halt.

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Booting And 11.2 Repair Doesn't Recognize Itself?

Jun 11, 2010

but I know a fair amount about the OS. I really like openSuSE, and I was trying to install 11.2 on my laptop, completely blank hdd. It installed just fine;I used the default options (the partition scheme was /boot, swap, root, /home) and started thesktop without a hitch. However, when I restarted, my BIOS would not even recognize an OS on the hard drive. I was also unable to boot using the installation DVD. I tried to use the repair feature, and I would either get a message saying that the boot loader was corrupt,d could not be repaired, or that the package database didn't match the version of openSUSE installed. I've tried re-installing multiple times, all with the same results. I have tried different partition schemes and I've tried different booting settings, such as enabling boot from root or /boot partition

I am thinking that by choosing Kernel Safe Mode to install openSUSE, that it did not install all the repositories, and it is why I am running into some difficulty.

OpenSUSE Install :: Repair Bootloader In Opensuse 11.3?

Aug 14, 2010

I have made the mistake of installing windows XP on one of my drive after I've upgraded to opensuse 11.3 on my other drive. Now, my computer is always booting to XP and doesn't load Grub anymore... I guess I should have seen it coming I previously had similar problems with my boot loader which I could resolve using the Repair boot loader utility distributed with the installation DVD. Apparently, this utility is not distributed anymore with opensuse 11.3... so I'm a little lost. I'd like a bit of advise before I start messing with Yast / boot loader and potentially break everything.

My system is setup as follows: sda is partitioned into sda1 (swap), sda2 (root / in ext4), sd3 (/home in ext3) and sd4 (/windows/F in NTFS containing virtual machines) sdb is partitioned into sdb1 (my Windows XP install in NTFS) and sdb2 (another storage drive in NTFS).

OpenSUSE Install :: Clean Of 11.4 Goes Well But After Rebooting - X Does Not Start?

Apr 15, 2011

I have recently done clean installs of 11.4 on two computers and then done clean re-installs but still have the same problem. Each time, the install was without flaw and I could download the updates, when offered, in the install process. At the end of the install I can log into KDE and everything works. However, after shutting down, on reboot, I only get a command line login. I can either login and run startx or use su and do init 3 followed by init 5. This tells me I am getting to runlevel 5 but X isn't starting. Either of those approaches gives me the KDE login. However, after that I have to manually start the network in YAST. I also think I had had to restart CUPS but I have only got as far as installing a printer once so I can't be absolutely sure that happened. As I indicate, this is fully reproducible. Anyone give me a clue as to what is going on?
