I have Dell XPS M1330, i had Windows 7 x64 installed on a partition of the hard drive. I installed Ubuntu 10.1 64-bit on a an unallocated partition. Ubuntu installed fine except now when i restart my computer i dont get to chose which OS i want to use and Ubuntu starts automatically. What can i do to get to chose the OS at startup?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?
I have a dual boot system (Linux and Windows) that I normally run headless and which boots by default into Linux (which is what I use mainly). This all works fine, except that on occasions when I want to boot Windows I have to plug in a keyboard and monitor just to select Windows in the initial grub boot screen. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this ? I don't mind if I have to boot Linux first, I just want to be able to reboot into Windows occasionally without having to plug in any peripherals.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy internet connection used to be a direct LAN connection to my provider. Back then, everything would load fine on both Windows and Ubuntu (dual boot). However, a while ago they started needing me to dial using a username and password (over a PPPoE connection). But since then, I haven't been able to browse certain websites on Ubuntu, even though there have been no such issues on Windows. Some example websites are - Ovi's sign in page (although share.ovi.com loads fine, and nokia.com loads fine), Live Mail (works on Chrome(ium) and Opera but not on Firefox (both 3.6 and 4)) and other random websites.
Some of the websites that don't load show timeout messages on Chrome and for some websites, the browser will keep trying to load without an end (I've left it like that even for hours but not noticed anything different happen).
I have tried changing the DNS servers to the ones suggested in the comment. I have even tried booting from a Fedora LiveCD and then changing the DNS to those (and even to the ones of OpenDNS), but the exact same thing happens. Here's output of ipconfig on Windows: Opera error messages seem to be a little more informative and they have the following errors in turns:
Secure connection: fatal error (552)
Secure connection: fatal error (40)
Followed by: Opera was not able to connect to the server. The server may be using the unsupported SSL 2 protocol, which is not considered safe enough for secure communication. The site owner should upgrade to TLS 1.0 or newer. Does anyone know why this is happening and how it can be fixed?
Update: Just saw here [URL].. that someone else was having similar problem and solved it by putting a NetworkManager.conf file in /etc/NetworkManager. What needs to be in that file?
I have installed Windows 7 and Debian in my Laptop. The problem is that when I get to the Grub Menu, If I select Windows 7,and then I turn off my pc, Grub dissapears and I can't no longer enter any OS. Every time this happens I have to re-install the Grub through a live CD. (This doesn't happen if I use Debian, but sometimes I must enter Windows to play games or anything like that hehe)

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running an Acer 1810Tz, dual boot with win7.Under 9.10 and Grub I had no boot issues, however I have just completed the upgrade to 10.04 and upgraded GRUB to GRUB2.Everything boots just fine into Ubuntu, and my GRUB menu looks right, but when I select the Windows 7 option, the machine just hangs with a black screen, white cursor top left. I'm sure this is a trivial problem, something overwritten that shouldn't have been perhaps, but I have no clue where to start.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 1 tb external hard drive and I was trying to put a windows.iso on it with startup disk creator but everytime I would select the windows iso it wouldn't show up.
Some background:
- the disk images are from the reboot disks that came with my labtop
- I do not have access to windows
Edits:
Using gparted, I turned my external hard drive into a bootable and put both ISO disc on it. Once I plugged it in my labtop and turned my labtop on, I get an error messages that says "BOOTMGR is missing".
- I ripped the both ISO images from the 2 system recovery disc that I ordered from HP specially for my brand of laptop.
- My CD-ROM drive does not work, or else I would have just used the disc regularly
- The operating system currently on the labtop is Ubuntu 10.04
I want to have it with vnc remote, because I want to have it in a place away from monitor and if it shuts down I have to connect it with a monitor and keyboard enter the user password and open vnc. So I want to do as windows start vnc on startup, and I don't know if it's possible enter the user password from remote.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever I start XFce, about 20 Nautilus windows also start up, choking the system and generally being a nuisance. I don't even use Nautilus as my file manager under XFce, and whenever I try to delete it or set it not to run on the XFce session manager, it still appears on next startup. I've tried to find where XFce stores its session information - deleting Nautilus shortcuts from ~/.config/session-state did nothing - and had no luck. I'm using Ubuntu (not xubuntu) Lucid.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed ubuntu 10.10 on my win7 laptop (Acer Timeline 3810T) with wubi. I can mount the laptop's windows partition with no issues using NTFS Config (after installing hal), but every time after I reboot ubuntu tells me that it cannot mount the windows partition. If I reopen NTFS config after reboot now my previously-mounted partition shows as having 0Gb of data and there is a new /host partition that represents the windows partition. I can then mount it again by renaming it into /media/Windows and it again works until a reboot.

I had to re-install Windows XP because the install was running slow.So, I created another partition using GParted for my personal data and moved my files there and re-installed Windows XP.Now, the Windows partition won't mount automatically.NTFS Configuration Tool shows 0.0GB. So, I have to open up a Terminal window, and issue sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Windows and everything is fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu (the full version). I liked Wubi a lot, but that's because I just had to press down and enter during startup. After uninstalling it, I went to the full version, but that's been giving me more trouble than Wubi, lol.
First, it replaced my Windows Boot Manager with GRUB (which IMO sucks because it takes like 15 seconds to load the menu and it lags when you want to press an arrow key). Second, it screwed up my Windows (the first time I started up Windows I got like 50 lines of errors and after that I had to do the disk check thing but now it works). I use Vista x32, and when I try to boot into Windows it gets to the (C)Microsoft with the green loading bars thing and after about 5-10 seconds my computer randomly (without warning, the screen just turns black) restarts. Goes back to the BIOS menu, a full restart.
My first priority is to get Windows fully running without restarts during boot time. Then I'd like to use Windows boot manager to start Ubuntu (I checked with EasyBCD, Ubuntu doesn't show in WBM.
Oh BTW, dual-booting ubuntu 10.04 and WinVista SP2.
i just installed Ubuntu from an ISO about a year old and of course i updated it to the latest version and when i get that screen at startup where i have a choice of which version to load i get something like this: My current version, memtest, an old installation of Ubuntu and some really old versions. The problem is i also have Windows7 and Vista installed(vista really needs to go) but i don't have either of them as a choice in the bootloader. How do i get it back? Also before the update i had it on the list.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have searched around but did not find anything similar, so I make a new post. I have installed Mac4Lin icons, theme and font, and I am using Emerald (with "emerald --replace" command in the window manager of compiz) and everythin is fine.
Some few times (every 4~5 days), when I start the system, it opens up as the title, like Emerald is not starting or something. If I logoff and then logon again, it is fine. Not that is a serious problem... just annoying in case you want to demonstrate the "power of the system" in an important meeting and it shows up like that.

This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

I have the windows 7 install iso but no windows computers! startup disk creator only lets me use ubuntu variants. I have a mac and ubuntu 10.10, and i have so far found no way to write an ISO to a disk without paid windows applications like ultra ISO, its driving e ******* crazy, every time i want to write an ISO to a USB stick i need windows! and now i have a virus (trust windows)! Why can we only write .iso files to a disk in this world?

View 1 Replies View RelatedA couple of months ago I decided to use the wubi installer to install ubuntu on my comp in a dual boot configuration. Yesterday, I clean installed my windows drive with windows 7.I have my windows install on drive C: and my wubi install in Drive D: ( they are on completely different hard disks ), so the ubuntu virtual disks are still intact and the wubildr.mbr is still there.
The bootloader screen at startup doesn't appear at all! I tried to manually boot into the D: hard drive but come up with a error 17 grub loading error, which was because the grub loader doesn't recognize the file system on the drive (ntfs). is there a way to somehow recover the wubi installation?
EDIT: I did some research on the net, apparently if I backup up the root.disk file, erase everything else on the drive, install wubi again and overwrite the root.disk file with the backed up one I should be able to restore my previous ubuntu installation! However, I don't want try something until I'm certain that it would work.
I accidentally set the grub startup manager's time to 0 secs and windows xp as the default OS. (I have windows xp and ubuntu on this laptop.)
Now when I turn on or restart my computer, it boots up straight to windows, I can no longer access the grub boot selection screen or my ubuntu OS.
i am using fedora 14. Each time i login i have to manually mount my windows drives. Is there any script or system setting which will help me to auto mount my windows drive on startup.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter booting, the sda5 and sda8 mounts work fine, but the Windows shares haven't been mounted. If I enter the command: mount -a everything works fine. I don't know if this a timing issue, or something to do with the new systemd stuff, but it has happened in previous Fedora releases from time to time.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two hard drives in my desktop. One HD has a working Ubuntu system-hence the ability to post here- and the other contains Windows XP Pro. When the XP drive crashed I was able to re-install an image I had saved using Acronis. Unfortunately the dual-boot option at startup is no longer available. I can only boot to Ubuntu. Not so bad really but there are some programs on Windows that I need to use. Is there any way, using Grub perhaps, that I can reconfigure an MBR to include the second hard drive and the Windows system?
