Ubuntu :: XFCE - 20 Nautilus Windows Upon Every Startup

Jun 6, 2010

Whenever I start XFce, about 20 Nautilus windows also start up, choking the system and generally being a nuisance. I don't even use Nautilus as my file manager under XFce, and whenever I try to delete it or set it not to run on the XFce session manager, it still appears on next startup. I've tried to find where XFce stores its session information - deleting Nautilus shortcuts from ~/.config/session-state did nothing - and had no luck. I'm using Ubuntu (not xubuntu) Lucid.

General :: Nautilus Won't Quit In XFCE

Jan 31, 2011

How can I quit Nautilus? Supposedly it's Xubuntu ( with XFCE ); there are no panels, but right-clicking provides an Applications-Help-Reset-Exit-etc menu. After some googling Nautilus taking over the desktop seems to be a common problem, and typing something like killall nautilus or nautilus -q in Terminal is recommended. How can I open Terminal with no right-click menu and no panels, and Alt+F2, which, as far as I've understood, opens the Terminal, doesn't work?

Debian :: Startup And Rc's - Run Different Desktops - Gnome - Xfce

Jul 16, 2011

After an error occurred i can log in using the recovery console and startx manually.

If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.

I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.

I am using Squeeze, Gnome, default installation.

2. How do you configure startup applications?

4. How do I add custom keyboard? (ALT+SHIFT switching)
5. I restarted laptop and all my applications re-opened after restart. I do not want that. How to disable this?

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy Xfce 4.8 VERY SLOW First Thunar Startup

May 16, 2011

I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning. Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears. After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.

Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.

Ubuntu :: How To Get Nautilus To Automount Ext Drive At Startup

May 29, 2010

I want nautilus to automatically mount my external drive when ubuntu 10.04 starts. This drive is encrypted, but the key has already been stored and all I have to do is click on it in my Places menu for it to mount.

It mounts to: /media/Will's Drive

I feel like I shouldn't have to edit fstab or anything like that. If I can add it to my startup programs, that would be great, I just need to know the command to get nautilus to open up /media/Will's Drive at startup.

Ubuntu :: Stop Nautilus From Unfocusing Windows When Pressing On An Item In Another Windows And Dragging It To The First One

this might not seem a big issue but I'd really like to know whether it's possible to stop Nautilus from unfocusing windows when pressing on an item in another windows and draging it to the first one. For example, I want to move a file from one window to another. I click the middle mouse button on that item and drag it to the first one which looses it's focus so often it's quite irritating.

Debian Multimedia :: Opening Windows Shares In XFCE (Thunar)

May 24, 2015

Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.

Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Goes To X-Windows Login Screen Instead Of Xfce?

My default desktop environment is Xfce 4.7 (older machine). Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

General :: Remove Gnome Windows Manager And Install Xfce

Is it possible to install a different windows manager? Currently I am using an HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is "gnome-shell" that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

Ubuntu :: Mounting Windows Share Using Nautilus

However, I could not log in; there was no error messages, but Nautilus kept prompting me for my username etc..It would seem like I've entered the wrong details, but I've used a Mac OS to access the share using the same wired network and I had no problems doing so.So what could be the problem? Am I missing some setting? Or is the Windows share setting denying access to Linux systems?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Mounting Windows Share?

I have been looking into how to get Nautilus to emulate the windows "map network drive" feature.

I have found several howto's that use various command line utilities to try to do this, however they tend to be like trying to use a sledgehammer to fix small dents.

When I connect to a share server, Nautilus puts a directory on my desktop that only Nautilus seems to be able to see and use. I would like to be able to access this directory with non-Nautilus applications.

The windows don't have minimize, resize and close icons on the top bar. The settings selection for "Window Manager Tweaks" doesn't start any program. The programs that are open in the users session are not saved, even though that option is checked. Can this be explained by corruption of a single file somewhere? Or should I re-install XFCE again.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Doesn't See Shared Folders On Windows Box

Nov 24, 2010

I have a home network consisting of a Desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate and a laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. Nautilus won't allow me to open Windows shared folders from the browser by just clicking on the icons. That is to say, clicking on Network in the bookmark pane and opening Workgroup doesn't do anything. Sometimes I get a "can not mount: failed to retrieve share list from server" error, sometimes my Windows box just isn't visible at all. All my shared folders on the laptop are visible and rw accessible from the Windows desktop.

I should add that if I hit ctrl-L in Nautilus and manually enter "smb://<server-name>/share/" in the address bar, it mounts and opens the specified folder just fine. I have some of the folders already manually mounted to various locations in fstab.

I've found the issue with Games for Windows Live, and uninstalled that from the Windows computer. I'm not using firewalls on either computer for now to eliminate that as a possibility. Since the Ubuntu Laptop seems to be the one with the problem, I'll focus on that for now.

Code:
$ nc -zv 192.168.1.100 445
Connection to 192.168.1.100 445 port [tcp/microsoft-ds] succeeded!
$ nc -zv 192.168.1.100 139
Connection to 192.168.1.100 139 port [tcp/netbios-ssn] succeeded!
