View 6 Replies View RelatedI have ran into a permissions problem. It seems that any file I have created with Fedora I can browse to in Firefox. I cannot browse to files that I have downloaded from the internet or copied locally across our network. I changed file permissions to 755 and 777 for these files. I even thought that maybe it was the php file content that was causing the issue. So, I copied the file content from file 2 into file 1. File 1 was the file I could always browse to since I created it in Fedora. I could still browse to file 1 after it had file 2's content.
I look at the permissions and they appear the same for both files. I am not sure why I cannot open the other files. I downloaded phpMyAdmin. I cannot hit any of these files in a browser. I also copied some files from a a backup location we have internally. I cannot browse to any of these files either. I used chmod 777 filename. Even after doing that I could not hit any of the files. I moved the files into my document root directory ( /var/www/html ) and I still cannot browse to these files.
I download a file to my laptop desktop, it saves above and behind the panel menubar (Applications / Places / System). As such, the files aren't easily accessible. How might I ensure that downloaded files are visible on the screen and not 100px above & behind it? Perhaps related, I've got a second monitor attached to the laptop (primary). It seems this second monitor's resolution is affecting where downloaded files are put...out of sight.
Primary laptop: Dell Vostro 1310. Resolution = 1280x800
Secondary monitor: Acer 19-inch LCD Flat Panel. Resolution = 1280x1024.
I've tried all the settings in Monitor Preferences to no avail. Searched Google without luck. Currently on Ubuntu 10.10 and the system is (according to Update Manager) up-to-date.
"You'll probably want to operate from inside your home directory. If your user is (for example) username, your home directory will be /home/username/. For the rest of this section we will assume you have downloaded your zip file to /home/username/src. If you do not have a src directory, you can create it with the following "mkdir" (make directory) command:"
Where do the commands go? I cant make it work in terminal. How do I get back to "home" from where i am now? example /home/mydesktop/. I am working in mydesktop. I have downloaded some packages that pkcon search will not find, but when I try to install them using "synaptic" it cant find the packages i dl. So I found this tutorial.
"So, we have our source package in /home/username/src/.
Change to the /home/username/src/ directory with the "cd" (change directory) command like so: cd /home/username/src/
but I dont know where to write the commands.
where the downloaded pkgs that Yast installs get Cached.I like to keep the RPM PKGS for emergencies etc on a External HardDrive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI loaded a distro (which does not seem relevant) onto my laptop and used it for a while. Applications did whatever they do creating and saving files. I know that I have images and documents and videos and music and such on the laptop among other non-distro data files. Is there a simple (straightforward) way to identify which files on disk are NOT part of the installed distro? I know how to use find. I know that find lets me locate files based on some date-time-stamp. I know, too, that I can use any selected file as a benchmark date-time instead of some specific command line string.
For example:
Code:
Find files whose modification date is before (or after) the date(s) associated with the file /path/foo.bar.
Is there any one file that I could use to peg the distro install date? Can I get that date from somewhere else like a file system details?

For this case I tried to modify the control.xml file in the root image for yast to hide the dialogs for language/keyboard layout, location and deskop choice (it will be a kde based distro). I can set the language, keyboard and location defaults correctly, but I couldn't get any success in disabling the regarding dialogs yet. And after all googeling and reading the available documentation I can't find a hint about the correct way to modify the control.xml this way.
nominate a disastrous distro from past or present that was simply AWFUL and what exactly was so bad about it?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a SUSE 10 sp2 server that I am using for hosting VMware and virtual machines. I have installed the basic host machine with only file server enabled (no dns, dhcp, print services or anything else). This is the fifth time I have had to reinstall because after I applied all the updates the system downloaded, it would not boot with a cd/dvdrom mounted. I tried everything I knew hot to do, which I admit isn't much (edited the fstab, tried to mount through command line) but nothing brought it back.
this all started because I had the entire machine loaded with VMware, two virtual machines, and all was well until I decided to update the OES2 sp1 virtual machines. All manor of issues cropped up like corn in the summer. So I reloaded after a week because I couldn't fix the problems and decided in my limited knowledge the updates probably caused the issues, and there was no undoing the updates. I assume (dangerous as that may be) that I applied too many updates to my bare system, but I would like a more experienced opinion.
I downloaded, through the torrent, the Pink Floyd's Live in Gdansk concert. It first downloaded as an ISO and when I unzipped I now have 5 CD folders with bin files in them. I've searched and followed many different instructions to open the bin files but nothing is working. How to be able to listen to the music?

Is there a stand-alone SWF viewer I can use to view downloaded SWF files on Fedora please? I know there's a browser plugin, but it does not have any controls to pause or rewind the file - it just plays the SWF file from start to end. I've tried using Mplayer, but it does not appear to support playing SWF files.

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.
I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?
Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.
Whenever I download a file using Firefox or Google Chrome and it has a ' character on it's filename, the file is renamed and a is added before the '. It's really annoying and I'd like to know how can I solve this issue.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I downloaded a bunch of movies on Ubuntu, which work fine. They are on a shared drive, so when I look at them using Windows 7 they are displayed as a 'file' rather than an .avi
They can still be opened and played in VLC and play fine
I've downloaded 4 versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu but I've had no success in making a CD. Downloading them at the same time should not have been the problem as I've done it before. This was done after a fresh install of 9.04 Jaunty I had a problem with previous installs I have of an upgraded lucid 10.04 Could several partitions cause a file corruption, I know I had a file problem with Ubuntu one across several partitions.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a download cap therefore when I install Debian, I like to have a backup of all downloaded .deb files that I can install from rather than download all over again. From what I've read, it should be a simple case of copying the .deb files to /var/cache/apt/archives and then install using apt-get. But apt-get seems to 'ignore' them. Am I supposed to do something to get apt to use them? Bearing in mind, I need to do this from a console as there will be no DE.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a script or a bittorrent client which is able to move a file after downloading and placing it in a specific folder depending on the file type. E.g. moving a newly downloaded movie to "Videos" and an ISO-file to "Files".
I feel as if i have used a client with this functionality before but can't remember the name.
Since I at the moment use Transmission as my bittorrent client a script would also work since Transmission can run it after finishing the download.
