Ubuntu :: Can't Get Sound On Dell
May 31, 2010
I recently set up Ubuntu on my Dell Dimension 1100, and it's working perfectly, besides having no sound. The problem is, I need a driver, but can't find it. The driver I used with XP is the ADI 198x Integrated Audio. I downloaded the installer from Dell's website and ran it with Wine, but that didn't work. I need a way to get this driver on Ubuntu, without having to use an exe.
Edit: Oh, and I looked on ASLA project, but they don't have the brand ADI!

It used to work, and now it don't. I would assume that something went amiss after a recent update, but don't exactly now for how long the sound hasn't been working.
The sound isn't muted- afaict, but nothing comes out of the speakers.

We have some users with Dell 980's running RHEL that get no sound in RHEL and also in their Windows XP VM. I've logged in as root and still no sound.
When I run the command "alsamixer" I've turned up all the levels for Master and Speaker yet nothing works.
I believe this box has the realtek alc269 sound card. I've read some of the solutions on it but there doesn't seem to be a definitive fix for this issue.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 830 Dual Pentium on which I installed 10.04. I have installed (slotted in) an SB Audigy 2 ZS card, from another PC, but it doesn't appear to be working. The donor PC suffered a graphics card failure that killed the motherboard. I can't tell whether the sound card is actually faulty. Did the sound card ought to work without any 'fiddling'?

After a fresh install of 10.10 on a Dell XPS 1330 I cannot get any audio when connecting to an LCD TV via HDMI. I get video no problem but sound only from internal speakers.
Under System/Preferences/Sound on the Hardware tab there is an profile entry for 'Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output' but if I select this all goes silent.
I checked alsamixer and nothing is muted. The aplay -l output is below.
aplay -l

I have working speakers that I am trying to attach to my Ubuntu Dell computer. It's an older computer, and only has 512 ram, and a 20 gig hard drive right now. When I hooked up the speakers, and everything and try to play a ..... music video, the music plays at a very sped-up rate. The speakers are Altec Lansing speakers. I have tried to find the answer to this problem with no luck. Do I need to do any coding in the terminal? Or is there another problem?

have a Dell Studio 540 and am currently running Fedora 14 x64 KDE version. All seems to work well except I have no sound. Support.dell.com tells me my sound card needs a RealTek driver as well as ALC888 HD driver. Now I don't use the HD integrated sound (back), so I am assuming it's the Analog sound hardware (that I plug my headphones in on the front of the machine). Not sure if that is clear or not, or maybe will have no relation whatsoever how ever I have no sound. I have installed other distros and sound works, but I would really like to use Fedora.

I recently switched my computer over to Fedora 12 from Win7. When I booted off the Live CD everything worked great, but after I installed and ran a yum update, I have no sound! The volume is not muted in any of the places I could find to look. I had the same problem in Ubuntu 10.04, which is why I decided to switch back to Fedora thinking I may not have the issue there ... but alas I was wrong. Here is some system info:

I'm a Dell Optiplex 380 MT Workstation user which have a Intel HDA Integrated sound controller. I was using Ubuntu 9.10 32 Bits Karmic, and all works fine, but, two days ago I did a fresh install to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 32 Bits Lucid. In Ubuntu 9.10 I didn't do nothing to make work all features of my workstation, but, in 10.4 LTS the sound don't work. The hardware appear in "Speaker Icon" and in the alsamixer menu, but nothing works. It's happens in the Live CD, Installation in Hard Disc, 32 Bits Version and 64 Bits version.
Here is the output of the command, in Ubuntu 9.10 & Ubuntu 10.4. The only difference that I see is the follow in lspci (bold text):
lspci
Ubuntu 9.10: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Ubuntu 10.4: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
At both version this is the which use (same output):
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0
Codec: Realtek ALC269
I've installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-21-generic-pae, reboot system and nothing happens.
lsmod | grep snd

Something about my sound setup does not agree with Linux. I couldn't get sound on Puppy Linux and I can't get sound with Ubuntu either. I'm trying to use speakers through the headphone jack at the front of the tower (system unit, whatever you call the thing that houses the motherboard/ CD Drive etc.)
I tried the basic sound troubleshooting from this guide: [URL]..Since I still have the links up from it, I might as well share them with you. 1. This is the ALSA Information Script tailored to my settings: [URL]..
2. This is the ALSA Driver Configuration Guide. Scroll down to Line 587 for my card ( Module snd-ens1371):[URL]..

Just got a Dell Inspiron N5030. Internal speaker works. I can make a skype test service with internal speaker device. When I plugged the head phone, the head phone does not work. No problem with the head phone indeed. I have searched the forum for N5030 key word. But never able to find one.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013.

A friend lent me their Ubuntu book but I can't understand it and could not find anything about the sound suddenly going from the speaker on Monday night. I went to Sony Ericsson's site to check something on my account and loud music suddenly started blaring out so I pressed the Fn button and End which muted it. However, I forgot to take it off before closing down for the night and as of Tuesday morning I have no sound. Would me leaving mute on all night have screwed something up or has it just suddenly gone? I am so upset as I cannot afford to get another laptop as not working and this is my last resort since my original Compaq one died.
I appreciate any "Helpful" solutions. Not in techy but layman's terms please as I won't understand. Also if you do reply, I am in the UK and also don't get notifications so I am not being rude if I can't get back to you quickly. I will be going to bed now.

setting up CentOS 5.3 (x86_64) on a Dell Vostro 420 Workstation, I came across a few problems/questions:
1. I am using software RAID1 (including sda and sdb), following the tutorial on CentOS Wiki. However, in my case, GRUB wants to install on /dev/md0 (the RAID device mounted as /boot) instead of /dev/sda (which would be the MBR, as usual). This is confusing, since installing to a partition is completely different from installing to the MBR. I suspect it *does* write to the MBR since the system does boot afterwards and the MBR was empty before. So maybe /dev/md0 is just a bit imprecise If yes, is the MBR still written to sda only, so that it is necessary to setup grub on sdb separately, as indicated in the documentation?
2. Sound does not work. The sound controller (ICH10 family) seems to be recognized, but the sound test behaves strangely: Normally, you have the three test sounds, and only after that a window will appear asking for confirmation. On my machine, the confirmation window appears immediately (!) so it seems the system is not even trying to play the sounds. Very strange...
3. I am seeing this damned "BIOS Bug: MCFG area at f0000000 is not E820-reserved" message. (May or may not be related to issue #2) It seems many people have this problem, but there is no real solution. In few cases, a BIOS update did the trick, but I think most hardware manufacturers are not even considering this a bug as long as there are no problems in Windows. It does seem to depend on the distribution, however, so newer kernels obviously have learned to handle the situation. Is this being considered by the upstream provider? Switching to Fedora is not really an option here

Here, "enable_msi=1" was not initially included in sound.conf, I added. After adding I find that volume change buttons are working, but sound is not coming. Mixer channels are all set to active mode and vol is MAX to 100. Mixer channels show two tabs -- one showing HDA_Intel and the other showing HDA_ATI_HDMI. Mic Jack mode is Line_in.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Dimension 4600 and the sound quality isn't very good. I loaded VirtualBox and installed WinXP on it. If I play the same ..... video on Ubuntu and then on the Vbox WinXP machine the difference is startling. It sounds beautiful on the WinXP machine. Is there any way to improve the sound quality on Ubuntu? When I play the video (any video) on Ubuntu there is a lot of static noise to contend with.

I'm trying to get HDMI audio to play from my Dell XPX M1330 laptop through a HDMI cable to my Sony Bravia TV.
This is a dual booted laptop. Booting into Windows 7 on the same laptop and streaming the desktop through HDMI cable to the TV shows up on the TV just fine, including sound through the TV's speakers.
However, when booting into my Debian laptop, with the HDMI cable already plugged in, I am able to play the videos, but no sound comes out of the TV's speakers. (plugging in the HDMI cable after logging into Gnome hangs up the entire system and I have to cold boot; setting that problem aside for now).
Since Windows 7 can figure this out, I consider this just something I don't have configured properly.
What do I need to do in order to enable sound to be piped through HDMI to the TV's speakers?
System details are shown below:
Pavucontrol Configuration tab dropdown indicating it is not sensing, or doesn't know about, the HDMI hardware:
cat /etc/debian_version shows 7.8
Output of aplay -l is:
Code: Select allcensored@thedell:~$ aplay -l

I have made sure the card is not muted using kmix, alsamixer, and running alsaunmute 0. It was working for some time and just stopped. Has anyone ever experienced an issue with a Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value Dell OEM sound card, models SB0200 and SB0203, using the EMU10K1X chip that causes any multimedia application (Amarok) or flash web site where the audio plays back way too fast?
I tried this on two different Dells, a Dimension 4600 and Dimension 8300. The only variable that was a constant was the Creative card. I took the OEM card out and put in another card, audio playback speed was fine. The only reason I am asking, even though the OEM card is slightly inferior, it has the front panel multimedia connector pins on the OEM card. Thus, if I use another card, either the front panel multimedia jacks become unusable or I have to turn on the integrated sound in the BIOS and run two sound cards.

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.
