Ubuntu :: Boot Bug With Gigabyte Motherboards?
Oct 28, 2010
This thread [URL].. was the only one I could find on this forum that addressed the problem I am having. It also involved a Gigabyte motherboard. I recently purchased a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 motherboard which is a version 1.3 . I have a v. 1.0 of the same motherboard which I have used regularly for a year.
The problem I have is that newer versions of Ubuntu (10.04 and 10.10) don't boot reliably with the new motherboard. It will boot up to where it says "Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom. Done." and then will stop. If I hit any key on the keyboard the boot finishes and everything is OK. Sometimes it will hang like this but often it will boot successfully without assistance. I need it to boot by itself reliably every time.
Older versions of Ubuntu (8.04 and 9.04) boot just fine with the new board. If I put the drive with the 10.04 installation in my older Gigabyte v.1.0 computer, it boots reliably every time. Interesting to note that Windows XP sp1 installs fine on the older v. 1.0 computer but I need XP sp2 in order to do a successful installation on the v 1.3. I have stress-tested the new setup for 6 hours without incident and memtested the RAM for 4 hours without error. I have even swapped RAM between the two with no resolution.
I can't find any thing in syslog to explain this. It stops just before the splash screen comes up. I removed splash with no positive result.

I would like to know as to how to save a boot order sequence...In my desktop PC I have a gigabyte MOBO housing Pentium Dual Core processor...
Whenever I have to boot from an external USB , I have to press del at boot , go into CMOS features and change the Order of Booting 1-DVD 2 USB-FDD 3. USB-HDD 4. Local Hard Disk
The problem is that everytime I have to repeat the above to boot from USB...I am also confused between USB - HDD and USB - FDD...Some utils partition and use the USB like a HDD while it is not the case with FDD I guess
How do you freeze the boot order so that on inserting any USB / External HDD at boot , the system should give it the priority over local hard disk..
Also in Giga MOBO I noticed that there is no "generic USB" mentioned in BIOS...It lists the USB device by name say "Kingston Data Traveler " "Sandisk Micro" etc ....
What should I do to make the boot order permanent?

I would like to connect my pc to the TV but the vga cable is not compatible with my analog Tv.The pc that i'm using is equipped with everything, except it hasn't got an agp port for my TV-OUT video card.I have a second motherboard with cpu(+power source) on it, but it's too slow so i don't want to use it.So! My idea is to connect the pc to the second motherboard, and use the second motherboard just for the agp and the TV-out video card.(i really don't have no money for signal converters and new video cards at all)

Is it technically possible to use just one power supply for more than one motherboard? The reason for asking is that I have a number of old (a few years) boards that I would like to use to make up a blender render farm yet only have one spare PSU. Having looked at the pin spec URL...pin 16 (power on) should only be connected to one board (or have a manual switch to ground for on)Pin 9 (standby +5v) probably should only connect to the one board or none and the other (or all) boards would need pin 9 to be tied to a +5v pin.All the boards would network boot and have nothing connected to them, no disks, floppies, monitors, etc; as all data would reside on a network server.

I have two servers (A and B) which are identical. My idea was to have a software RAID 1 with both of them running and if server A craps out I wanted to swap the hard drives from server B into server A. When I tried to test this idea the network driver doesn't seem to want to cooperate. ifconfig gives nothing and I can't figure out why. From googling I've read that a network card has a unique ID on it (I'm assuming their talking about the MAC address) and is used in some config files which is why swapping hard drives gives two different MAC addresses and confuses the system. If that is so would anyone know exactly what config files the mac address is stored/used in? That way I can make a backup of those files and swap those out if I ever need to swap out the hard drives.

I installed a bunch of hfs/hfs+ software and wanted to make an hfs partition. The problem is, GParted only lets me make a 2 GB partition on a 250 GB disk. Why is this so? Is there a limitation in the software, and is this that limitation?

I'm learning C and trying to write a program to convert gigabyte into byte. It will take 50% of the value given and then convert that value into byte. But the problem is the output goes into minus / negative value. Like, if I enter 22, I get output: -2147483648.
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <math.h>
main (int argc, char* argv[])

I want to start using Ubuntu again but I gave up ages ago trying to get it to work with my Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 motherboard.I cant run from disc and I can't install. If I try to run it just takes me to a black screen with blinking cursor and that's all it does.If I try to install, basically the same.I can't get anywhere doing anything, so where do I start? How can I get it working on my system?By the way, this is with the latest Ubuntu. No, it's not a corrupt download or burn. I tried to download and burn, didn't work.I ordered a free cd, it did the same. This is an issue that is NOT related to the disc or the download of Ubuntu.

I am trying to get the 5.1 audio working on the gigabyte g31m-es2l mobo which has ALC883 audio chipset. Its onboard audio.
Its a fresh installation of ubuntu.I have set the sound properties as below. The speaker test only works for the front right and front left speakers.Rest other speakers are muted.
Also tried editing the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf file with uncommenting the audio channels from 2 to 6 and rebooting.Still its not working.
Tried running the following command and again only the front right and left speakers light up.

I had U10.10 installed prior to running U10.10 Desktop, and the wlan worked flawlessly on that.My understanding is that the packages are the same and so this should be installed with Desktop, however it will not action the final connection. The wlan is finding networks and prompts for the Key when connecting, but it never actually connects.

I did a pg_dump of our data warehouse, and it is 26 gigabytes. I wanted to load this data into a different database product (one that forked from Postgresql, so its syntax is very similar).I needed to change the syntax of the "COPY" command in the pg_dump output, remove references to "public", and change the table owner name. sed did these for me (albeit slowly). The output from pg_dump is a file called "pg-dump-output.sql".
pg_dump produces this:

Running Fedora FC14x86_64, Mobo gigabyte GA-880GM. processor AMD dual core athlon
Here's the problem:
I've checked the correct pins on the DB9 are going to the correct socket pins on the mobo, connected up a very verbose GPS to the port, and absolutely nothing !
I tried winbows XP on another partition and got nothing in a hyperterminal.
Loaded puppy on an ancient laptop ( P2), and checked with the same cables and plenty of date from the GPS.
Strangely enough running tcpdump -i /dev/ttyS0 gives this:-
Any ideas on what I've missed to get this port up and running ?

I've got an old laptop wich wireless adapter is a Gigabyte GN-WI01 GS MINI PCI(its chipset is Realtek RTL8169/8110, I believe) and I'm not able to make it run in Wifislax 3.1 Live CD. I downloaded the linux drivers for it and tried to install them following the instructions but when it came the time to execute configure.sh it told me that I had to actualize some kind of packets first(GK+ or something like that can't remember ). I also have another wireless usb adapter that I tried to use too. It's a Linksys WUSB54g v4(chipset: rt2570). I tried to follow a guide I found about making run an adapter like that on Wifislax 3.1 but when I had to "Force ralink rt73 on rt2500" it doesn't appear on my Live CD version, it appears "Force ralink rt73 on rt2570", dunno if it has something to be but I get an error while making it.
I don't know if it has to be with my laptop, my wireless adapters or my way of following the steps. If it has to be with my adapters I would like to buy some new one(not very expensive) that I won't have any problems running it on Wifislax and that will work on my old laptop(cause I just have that one and can't afford a new one).

I bought this motherboard 6 months ago and I've been hammering on it since then. I can get audio output on the analog channels but what I'd really like is output on the SPDIF (optical, digital) channel so that I can have better sound quality on my home theater system. What I've tried...-I followed the sound troubleshooting guide.-I tried the 6 stack/3 stack approach suggested on the ALSA website.-Tried compiling and installing the latest version of alsa.-Tried installing the development drivers for alsa that are put out by the ubuntu community.

I just replaced my motherboard with a Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H. I am happy to report that the OS (Ubuntu 10.04) was smart enough to boot up using the pre-existing software RAID 5 (four disks) and work fine with the new motherboard, CPU, and memory. However, since the new motherboard has a nice onboard display, I removed the PCIe graphics card (which was needed on the old board), and am now trying to configure the OS to use the "OnChipVGA."
This is what lshw produces
And here is what I get with startx:X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Fatal server error:

I have a Gigabyte M1022M netbook and I was tried to run OpenBSD, Debian Linux as well Archlinux on it with a X-Server.Everything worked great except the touchpad. It is an Elantech touchpad which should be supported by the Linux Kernel. After some time I tried to find something like a version or something else to clearly identify the touchpad but the touchpad was not listed in the output of "dmesg". There was also no entry in /proc/bus/input/devices.
