Hardware :: Only 2 Gigabyte HFS Partitions?
May 14, 2011
I installed a bunch of hfs/hfs+ software and wanted to make an hfs partition. The problem is, GParted only lets me make a 2 GB partition on a 250 GB disk. Why is this so? Is there a limitation in the software, and is this that limitation?

This thread [URL].. was the only one I could find on this forum that addressed the problem I am having. It also involved a Gigabyte motherboard. I recently purchased a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 motherboard which is a version 1.3 . I have a v. 1.0 of the same motherboard which I have used regularly for a year.
The problem I have is that newer versions of Ubuntu (10.04 and 10.10) don't boot reliably with the new motherboard. It will boot up to where it says "Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom. Done." and then will stop. If I hit any key on the keyboard the boot finishes and everything is OK. Sometimes it will hang like this but often it will boot successfully without assistance. I need it to boot by itself reliably every time.
Older versions of Ubuntu (8.04 and 9.04) boot just fine with the new board. If I put the drive with the 10.04 installation in my older Gigabyte v.1.0 computer, it boots reliably every time. Interesting to note that Windows XP sp1 installs fine on the older v. 1.0 computer but I need XP sp2 in order to do a successful installation on the v 1.3. I have stress-tested the new setup for 6 hours without incident and memtested the RAM for 4 hours without error. I have even swapped RAM between the two with no resolution.
I can't find any thing in syslog to explain this. It stops just before the splash screen comes up. I removed splash with no positive result.

Tried to install Ubuntu 10.04, when partition section popped up it did not detect either of my Hitachi SATA drives..I went to the website and the website for this Bd, at the bottom of the page, it says that 3rd party drivers are needed for linux. Does anybody know anything about this?

I'm learning C and trying to write a program to convert gigabyte into byte. It will take 50% of the value given and then convert that value into byte. But the problem is the output goes into minus / negative value. Like, if I enter 22, I get output: -2147483648.
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <math.h>
main (int argc, char* argv[])
{

I did a pg_dump of our data warehouse, and it is 26 gigabytes. I wanted to load this data into a different database product (one that forked from Postgresql, so its syntax is very similar).I needed to change the syntax of the "COPY" command in the pg_dump output, remove references to "public", and change the table owner name. sed did these for me (albeit slowly). The output from pg_dump is a file called "pg-dump-output.sql".
pg_dump produces this:
Code:

I would like to know as to how to save a boot order sequence...In my desktop PC I have a gigabyte MOBO housing Pentium Dual Core processor...
Whenever I have to boot from an external USB , I have to press del at boot , go into CMOS features and change the Order of Booting 1-DVD 2 USB-FDD 3. USB-HDD 4. Local Hard Disk
The problem is that everytime I have to repeat the above to boot from USB...I am also confused between USB - HDD and USB - FDD...Some utils partition and use the USB like a HDD while it is not the case with FDD I guess
How do you freeze the boot order so that on inserting any USB / External HDD at boot , the system should give it the priority over local hard disk..
Also in Giga MOBO I noticed that there is no "generic USB" mentioned in BIOS...It lists the USB device by name say "Kingston Data Traveler " "Sandisk Micro" etc ....
What should I do to make the boot order permanent?

Running Fedora FC14x86_64, Mobo gigabyte GA-880GM. processor AMD dual core athlon
Here's the problem:
I've checked the correct pins on the DB9 are going to the correct socket pins on the mobo, connected up a very verbose GPS to the port, and absolutely nothing !
I tried winbows XP on another partition and got nothing in a hyperterminal.
Loaded puppy on an ancient laptop ( P2), and checked with the same cables and plenty of date from the GPS.
Strangely enough running tcpdump -i /dev/ttyS0 gives this:-
Any ideas on what I've missed to get this port up and running ?

I have a Gigabyte M1022M netbook and I was tried to run OpenBSD, Debian Linux as well Archlinux on it with a X-Server.Everything worked great except the touchpad. It is an Elantech touchpad which should be supported by the Linux Kernel.After some time I tried to find something like a version or something else to clearly identify the touchpad but the touchpad was not listed in the output of "dmesg". There was also no entry in /proc/bus/input/devices.

Can anyone recommend a Linux sound driver for the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P rev. 1.0 motherboard.
I've found hints of Linux and many sources for Windows drivers, but so far haven't turned up any candidates for my Debian Lenny system.

A friend of mine bought a prebuilt system from a local computer store that has the Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H motherboard and he says he can boot Fedora off the CD but cannot install it as it doesn't detect the harddrive.
I assume it can't detect the SATA Controller as I am pretty sure hard drives use a universal driver so the only way for it not to detect the hard drive is if the controller is not detected.
I was wondering if anyone here has this motherboard and has this problem.
I think I gave him a Fedora 12 CD. (EDIT: It's Fedora 11 judging by the filename of the ISO I have on my Desktop...)
I myself haven't used Linux in a while since I completed my Linux course and this game I play needs Windows, but I am trying not to play that game as much anymore though because of free time issues... I have an Ubuntu Dualboot but have become used to Windows again. I am gonna try using Linux in a VM to get accustomed to it again, this way I can play with different versions/distros and still have the Windows 7 host as a fallback is something doesn't work...

I want to start using Ubuntu again but I gave up ages ago trying to get it to work with my Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 motherboard.I cant run from disc and I can't install.If I try to run it just takes me to a black screen with blinking cursor and that's all it does.If I try to install, basically the same.I can't get anywhere doing anything, so where do I start?How can I get it working on my system?By the way, this is with the latest Ubuntu.No, it's not a corrupt download or burn. I tried to download and burn, didn't work.I ordered a free cd, it did the same.This is an issue that is NOT related to the disc or the download of Ubuntu.

Also tried editing the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf file with uncommenting the audio channels from 2 to 6 and rebooting.Still its not working.
Tried running the following command and again only the front right and left speakers light up.

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run
Code:
sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print
and have received the following output:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I need at least 60 gig or more for my home partition. What can I do to shrink the root one? I currently do not have accsess to the install media or a rescue disk.
