Ubuntu :: Best Way To Access EXT4 From Win7

Apr 5, 2011

I just got a *new* computer (way excited, but I digress) I want to dual-boot Windows 7 (I have my reasons), but I want to use ext3/ext4 for most of my data. So I went looking for options to read ext3/ext4 from Windows.
Some of the things I found: [URLs]

Ubuntu Networking :: No Access To Win7 Shared Folder?

Sep 1, 2011

I've set up a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 32bit and shared specific folders on my Win7 PC. Everything should work okay as they both can see each other, but when I try on Ubuntu to access the Win7 shared folder it asks me for username and password. In Win7 I'm always logged in as Administrator with no password set and Ubuntu won't let me connect to it leaving the password blank. It just keeps asking for my username/password over and over again without any kind of error message. It doesn't come up with 'access denied' or anything, it just keeps refreshing the username/password login/connect gui so I can't say which side of the fence the problem is occurring on though I suspect it's on the Ubuntu side.

Software :: Can't Access Nfs Mount From Win7

Apr 10, 2011

I can't look at Google with different variations of "nfs" in search results anymore I am running suse 11.3 distro on my virtual machine , and it has nfsd (and idmapd) installed. I try to mount nfs directory from my Win7 host, and it works. But when I try accessing it - I get "access denied". It seems, that idmapd should be configured somehow to authorize requests from Windows, but it doesn't. Any hints on this one? Here's a bit of configs:

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Files From Windows From An Ext4 Disk?

Feb 5, 2010

I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

Programming :: Efficient Access Of Huge Files Or Defrag Ext4?

Sep 30, 2010

I need to figure out how to arrange for the fastest-possible read-access of a large or huge memory-mapped file. I'm writing high-speed real-time object-chasing software for a NASA telescope (on earth). This software must detect images of fast moving objects (across arbitrary fields of fixed stars), estimate what direction and speed the object image is traveling (based on the length and direction of a streak on the detection image), then chase after the object while capturing new 4Kx4K pixel images every 2~5 seconds, quickly matching its speed and trajectory, then continue to track and capture images until the object vanishes (below horizon, into earth shadow, etc).

I have created two star "catalogs". Both contain the same 1+ billion stars (and other objects), but one is a "master catalog" that contains all known information about each object (128 bytes per object == 143GB) while the other is a "nightly build" that only contains the information necessary to perform the real-time process (32 bytes per object == 36GB) with object positions precisely updated for precession and proper-motion each night. Almost always the information in the "nightly build" catalog will be sufficient for the high-speed (real-time) processes.

Fedora :: Boot Can't Access Ext4 Partitions On LVM Logical Volumes On RAID Array?

Feb 8, 2011

i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):

Code:

- 250GB system drive
250MB/dev/sdh1/bootext3
lvm partition rest of driveVolGroup_System
10240VolGroup_System-LogVol_root/ext4

[code]....

except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.

I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares

Jul 21, 2010

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Code:

I try this manually now:

Code:

Next I try to mount it:

Code:

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.

What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?
