Software :: Can't Access Nfs Mount From Win7
Apr 10, 2011
I can't look at Google with different variations of "nfs" in search results anymore I am running suse 11.3 distro on my virtual machine , and it has nfsd (and idmapd) installed. I try to mount nfs directory from my Win7 host, and it works. But when I try accessing it - I get "access denied". It seems, that idmapd should be configured somehow to authorize requests from Windows, but it doesn't. Any hints on this one? Here's a bit of configs:

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails
Code:
I try this manually now:
Code:
Next I try to mount it:
Code:
I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

I've already set up my home network to work smoothly with Samba, mainly meaning that my HTPC running Win7 can share the user home folder. So currently is simply have a Nautilus bookmark set to 'smb://win7server/users/username/' and it connects just fine.
Now, I want to use 'mount' to make a connection to this same folder spot such that it is seen as part of the native file system. I've tried this: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.2.101/users/username/ /mnt/win7server
But I get a 'wrong fs type' warning. WTF? I thought that windows was cifs? You guys have any pointers to how to mount this? BTW, I must absolutely mount this file system, as I'm running some programs built with Open Motif, which do not support Samba.

I did upgrade my Ubuntu on 10.10 and had always a Dual-Boot with Win7. After the install of Ubuntu, my grub wouldn't work anymore. I could only boot into Ubuntu, but GRUB didn't even appear. I already tried but this brought only the installs for Ubuntu and GRUB didn't start. Afterwards I tried to recover my MBR with the help of my Win7 DVD, but this didn't work out too. Now I can't boot neither Ubuntu nor Win7 and have to run from the Live-CD. I also tried to fix it with but setup(hd0) only returned, Error 17: Cannot mount etc. What can I do? I need my Windows for work and I don't want to reinstall neither Ubuntu nor Win7. Output of fdisk -l gives:

I just got a *new* computer (way excited, but I digress) I want to dual-boot Windows 7 (I have my reasons), but I want to use ext3/ext4 for most of my data. So I went looking for options to read ext3/ext4 from Windows.
Some of the things I found: [URLs]

In our current setup Win 7 users get prompted for a user-name and password which they don't need, and I have even tried root password. so I think i need to upgrade my samba server.

I've got my server mostly configured with Samba file shares - I can access from Linux and OSX computers. I've enabled Samba Clietn and Sambar server in the openSUSE firewall settings (on the server), but Windows 7 can't seem to connect. I've been trying to tweak registry keys in Windows and such, but had no luck. However, when I turned off the firewall on the server, I was instantly able to connect. Is there some other service or port I need to open for Windows 7?

I have two computers in my local network one with Ubentu Karmic 64 and one with Win7 64. The problem is in file sharing. I would like to be able to have access from one computers to another in both ways. But now I have only access from ubuntu to windows shares. On win machine I'm able to view ubuntu shared folders and printers but not able to browse them (or use printers from windows). I tried to change samba configuration, but my knowledge is to poor to solve this problem

I've set up a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 32bit and shared specific folders on my Win7 PC. Everything should work okay as they both can see each other, but when I try on Ubuntu to access the Win7 shared folder it asks me for username and password. In Win7 I'm always logged in as Administrator with no password set and Ubuntu won't let me connect to it leaving the password blank. It just keeps asking for my username/password over and over again without any kind of error message. It doesn't come up with 'access denied' or anything, it just keeps refreshing the username/password login/connect gui so I can't say which side of the fence the problem is occurring on though I suspect it's on the Ubuntu side.

why cant I access samba share by short-hostname from win7.when I ping short-hostname, the answer is the actual ip and short-hostname.mydomain.com pinging short-hostname does work, but accessing it from start-run does not! accessing by ip or short-hostname.mydomain.com works fine.ssh by short-hostname from win7 works fine too.

My machine is an hp 2133 mininote. It came factory installed with Windows vista, which repeadtedly crashed on me. To compenstate for this i installed gOS to dual boot with Vista. This was working fine but I was recently given a Windows 7 install disk, so I decided to upgrade. Windows seven installed without a problem but now I can't access the GRUB bootloader, windows 7 just loads automatically. I tried to restore it using the Super GRUB Disk usb utility but it didn't work, windows 7 still boots regardless.

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:
Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:
Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.
Now the questions:
1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".
2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?

this has happened in different distros, so far i have tried slack, arch, and mint at work i have an xp box with a shared folder i created. on my linux box i setup fstab as follows
Code:
//winxp/temp$ /home/user/temp cifs rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/home/user/.creds 0 0
this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

I figured I could just go in to my Kubuntu desktop and look at the drive. But it has only a lost and found and grub folder with a few files on the root named config-[version]-server (note this is a SCSI). Guessing I'm looking at the boot partition? So how do I mount the other partitions? When I do a fdisk -l I see 3 sdb 1,2,3 (2 and 3 are large, 1 is my boot partition) but when mounting them I get wrong fs type. I was sure its ext3 ( also tried 2 and 4 )? I just left the default 7.04 fs when I installed it. I'm able to put it in my desktop and my server but for the life of me I can figure out how to get at the data.

I'm using some software that using mount point such as truecrypt. I also mount shared folder on other machine (fileserver) and publish it using ftp. The problem is when the truecrypt volume dismounted or the shared folder mount point loosing connection to the fileserver, user can write to the mount point without knowing that they actually not writing to the truecrypt volume or to the shared folder.
My question is, when sometime the server reboot and truecrypt volume is not mounted yet, how to prevent write to the mount point? I dont run truecrypt mount automatically for security reason. Some question for shared folder, if fileserver restart and the shared folder mount point got disconnected, how to prevent write to the mount point?
