Fedora :: Boot Can't Access Ext4 Partitions On LVM Logical Volumes On RAID Array?

Feb 8, 2011

i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):

Code:

- 250GB system drive
250MB/dev/sdh1/bootext3
lvm partition rest of driveVolGroup_System
10240VolGroup_System-LogVol_root/ext4

[code]....

except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount A Server Partition With Normal User Access?

Jan 26, 2010

I need to mount a partition that is on a server (via samba).

I am doing the following in my fstab

Quote:

//server/www /media/www cifs rw,user,allow_other,default_permissions,credential s=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,dir_mode=0777,file_ mode=0777 0 0

I can mount it but it just allows me to access with the root user. How can I do it to get access with any user?

Additional Data: I added "rw,user,allow_other,default_permissions" because I thought that would solve de problem but it didn't.

Networking :: Run The Job Under A Root Account And Deny Read/write Access To A Normal User?

Jan 18, 2010

I'm setting up Ubuntu Karmic on my sister's old computer for my nephew, he's quite young so my sister asked to install some content filtering. I'll first setup an OpenDNS account and I've installed and managed to get dansguardian and squid working on a virtual machine to try it out. so far it's working pretty well, but I need to secure it form the inside out.

I was thinking of blocking specific outbound ports so he could not bypass the proxy. because by default the firefox configuration can be easily changed. so I have a couple of questions.

1. is it possible to block outgoing ports on Ubuntu?
2. is that the best method?
3. is there anything else I should be aware of to prevent subversion?

lastly, this question is probably unrelated to this board but I've set up a cron job to update a dynamic ip with OpenDNS, the problem is that the password is in clear text in the user's crontab, can I play with permissions? is it possible to run the job under a root account and deny read/write access to a normal user?

OpenSUSE Network :: Mounting A Cifs Share As Normal User In OpenSuse 11.4?

Apr 2, 2011

Q: How can I allow my users to mount a cifs share without an entry in fstab in OpenSuse 11.4?

I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:

1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit):
2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin
3. Make them setuid root:

Code:
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/mount.cifs
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/umount.cifs
4. Mount your cifs shares as a normal user:

Code:
martin@linux-y5qw:~> /sbin/mount.cifs //192.168.2.2/data /home/martin/data/ -ousername=martin
Password:

OpenSUSE Install :: Normal User Cannot Login - Screen Blinks - A Black Page Appears

Jun 27, 2010

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

OpenSUSE :: No Access To Other Partitions

Mar 8, 2011

I am currently testing for the first time openSUSE.I experience some problems right away, the most important problem:I can not get through the explorer (Dolphin) on another partition. When I try, I read underneath:

There was an error while accessing 'Disk 2'. The system notified:

org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolycy: org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed
auth_admin_keep_always <- (action, result)

I've already started looking at different solutions. But I'm not familiar enough with KDE to just be able to solve this problem. Anyone have any idea what to do to acces other partitions or drives anyway? Another problem is that the GUI is very slow, moving windows and scrolling is not smooth. Anyone have any idea what I can do about this?

I also have a black taskbar since I've moved it to my main screen as it automatically appeared on my small screen. How do I get it brighter again so the clock is readable again? And finally, the Explorer (Dolphin) has a very annoying behavior, I need only to click a folder to open it then as I really only want to select. How can I make a folder only open when I double click on it?

OpenSUSE Network :: Root User Has Access To Remote Folders/files Of Any User?

Jan 21, 2010

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

In the interim, I want to look at the ext4 partitions through windows. I know/knew about ext2ifs fs-driver.org but somehow I'm not able to view the ext4 partitions even though they show up in Control Panel as ext2ifs drives.

If you guys know of any other softwares which can do the same work or better please lemme know. I also tried something called ext2explore but that one crashes all the time around. Lastly, does somebody know which is the best way to be in the know of Squeeze development and the milestones within it.

Again, if I open Nautilus as root, all works fine. What I want is the following:- for all 3 partitions to automount on startup;- for all 3 partitions to be owned by me and not by root.I tried editing /etc/fstab, but to no avail. Neither did running "chown" help.
