View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:
Windows cannot access \IP_ADDRESSMovies Check the spelling of the name. Otherwize, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:

I got my server set up with 10.04, and with everything installed: DHCP, SSH, Samba, VBox, etc.
DHCP, SSH work fine, but I am having problems where I cannot ping the hostname of the machine.
It worked for a few minutes after I got everything installed and now it's not letting me connect via hostname. I can connect fine if I use the IP address. I cannot ping the machine by hostname unless I add it's IP address to the hosts file.

Everything works great, I can create folders, add files, etc. However I noticed that when I add files or folders via my mapped drive in Windows 7, it defaults to permissions that do not allow Deluge to access them. Deluge can now access the files. I don't want to have to modify permissions every time I add a new torrent to Deluge's watch folder which is /media/Share/data/Torrents.
How do I configure Samba (or linux, or windows) to give rwx permissions when I add a file or torrent via windows? And vice versa, if deluge downloads a file and moves it to completed downloads (which I haven't been able to get this far yet) will I be able to access it via Windows 7?
I installed samba server on fedora13 last week and share some files from samba server GUI. I also created samba user and password for shared folders but I can't get access samba share folder from neither fedora machine nor Windows XP. When I open samba share from other fedora such as smb://192.168.10.2. I can see share file and when I browse folder, password required box is appeared but after I put samba username and password. The Error message is Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share. Even when I browsed samba share from windows xp.

I'm relatively new to liunx and I have recently installed Fedora 9 to act as a media server. I thought everything was going well until I tried to connect to my Samba share but could not.Not sure what the netbios is but I believe this can be anything I want?So as far as I can tell, the laptop can see the Samba Share, Fedora can see it's own Samba share but nothing (both laptops XP and Vista or the Media Player) can connect to the /public folder..I don't login to either Laptop with a user account, so I believe I do not have to create a user.
View 7 Replies View Relatedso i found an older computer i want to play with as a file server. ubuntu server edition, installed gnome GUI (to make things easier for now, i plan on removing it later) and used [URL].. to configure my 1.5tb harddrive so my windows machines can access it. i had everything working but than a fatal crash made me start from scratch (os and all) now i am unable to access the samba share from a machine running windows 7, but i can access it from a machine running windows XP using the same login and password i set up for windows 7.this makes me believe it's a problem with windows 7 and not samba.

How to do this settings right to work fine, the ip are assigned by dhcp I don't use any static ip .When I try to browse the internet from the other computers some site's like {.com ; .org ; .info} are block, other site from {.ro} are working. Someone tell me something about turn off all my filters, but I don't know where to find this filter to turn it off. And when I use samba I can't have and internet access or vice versa. I am using samba version 3 (probably), and the problem is that the linux based nas can only be accessed via its ip 192.168.x.x but not its hostname /server string appointed by the smb.conf file:

I have a server which currently has a samba share for a printer and my home directory. Both have been working fine for a while now. I have a drobo (which is like a little USB RAID machine) connect via USB to the linux box. While trying to share it via samba I get weird messages from my windows machine (see screenshot). I have tried to share multiple folders on this drobo and no luck, all the same result.
I also tried a symbolic link, no good.

if i try to connect to my samba server ( share ) from my windows xp ( or vista, i've tried both ) it says, that the network share cannot be found. i've installed all necessary rpms on my fedora 10, necessary for running a samba server:

there is no iptables definition, or any other firewall installed, neither on the server nor the client. i've read through alot of howtos an manuals, but was not able to find the problem.
I don't think it has anything to do with the config file. More to do with SElinux. I need to know how to configure SElinux so I can see my samba share when SELinux is on. When I setenforce 0 I can seen all the files and folders set it to setenforce 1 cannot see anything.
Here is the output when I ran [root@fileserver /]# getsebool -a | grep smb
allow_smbd_anon_write --> on

These two options were off I tried turning them on.
This is another one of the commands I tried running. I did change a few options but I am not sure which I do need to change. I am running a stand alone server so I don't need the DC option.

My Fedora router has three nic's, one for the internet, one for lan and one for the wireless network, which uses hostapd. I have set up samba in order to enable windows file sharing from wireless lan to wired lan. Using the samba documentation I have enabled the wins server and wins proxy which should allow met to browse the shares across the networks, which theoretically should do the trick but it doesn't work as expected. I can see the pc's from the other network using windows neighbourhood, but as soon as I access one of them it fails saying that "network path could not be found" or something like this. Tried using windows 7, windows xp and linux for browsing but the result is the same. As firewall I have shorewall and the samba specific ports are enabled for both networks. How to setup samba for inter-network browsing?

I've got my Samba shares up and running. I can stream files from the server, I can create files on the server, and I can copy files from the server.
Running a Windows program (from a Windows box) directly from the Samba server, however, is turning into a nightmare. I'm getting Access is Denied errors from the Windows box, yet I can copy/create/etc from the entire directory with no problems.
Are there any special permissions I need to run EXE files from a Windows box, located on a Samba share? I've already chmod'd everything to 777, and I show full access when ls -Z is used.
I'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

I'm having problems with Ubuntu 10.04 samba PDC and windows7. I have a test network that I'm using to evauate 10.04 before I use it in production and have come across an intriguing problem with Windows 7. I have a clean brand-new installed Windows 7 ultimate and I have no problems joining the domain. (Standard registry modifications made). I can logon the window 7 box locally without a problem however when I try to logon using the domain the Windows 7 box accepts my password and start to load the user profile, at the point where the desktop would appear message is displayed to say "logging off" and returns me to logon screen.
What I have done to date: --
wiped Windows 7 box and reinstalled
Wiped user profiles both local and on PDC (including all user information)
Performed a complete uninstall of Samba (including TDB's) and
reinstalled a fresh copy of Samba and manually edited the smb.conf is a minimum basic PDC
I have no problems with Windows XP (SP3) box at any stage
I setup ubuntu 10.04.1 server on a computer I'm using as a server for my home. I can view the share folder on server from win7 I can read files but cannot right to the share. However from Xubuntu I was able to read and write no problem. So the question is... why can't windows 7 read and right like xubuntu? I have 2 win7 machines and both were denied writing to the share folder... I'm by no means an expert.. I setup the share using ubuntu server guide pdf... not sure if its done correctly maybe someone here knows off hand what kind of permissions would be causing this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a computer to allow a specific samba user to access and write to a folder on the web-server without any luck. I've tried creating symbolic links in the users home to the folder (/var/www/html/something) on the web server and from the server to a directory in the users home but neither seems to work. I haven't seen any errors from SELINUX either but I'm kind of stuck. Also tried adding a directory section and alias line to the httpd.conf but after doing that apache wouldn't start so I'm not really sure how this would be done properly.

I am fairly new to Fedora or rather use it only for some school exercises I get. I have to setup a Samba server with some basic settings and it doesn't want to work. I first tried it on the Fedora VM I got from school (version 11). It somehow worked, but extremely bad ... the Windows client had to wait for over a minute to get either access or an errormessage, that the server was not found (but when entered the ip in the adressfield on top it worked (with a minute or more to wait)). I tried updating the VM - no improvement. So I decided to download Fedora 12, installed it and the Windows client gains instant access on first glance. But when I try to get access to a specific share, it only tells me, that I am not allowed to access it Oo.

The funny thing is: I tried exactly the same config on my homeserver (copy and paste), which runs Arch, and it works with no problem. But on Fedora I cant access it from nowhere. Not from WinXP, Win7 or any Linux. Simply won't work.

This is my first post. I am not all that new to Linux. I have done lots of reading on the OS but always felt a little timid when it came to trying out stuff.Here is my problem I have a stand alone samba server I am trying to setup to share all my digital photos and other doc. I can see the share from other machines. On the windows machines you can see the users home directory and the share itself in an folder icon. Whenever I try to access the share it asks for a passwd. I enter the passwd and the share folder is visible when I click on the folder I get and error message.

On my machine I have Apache setup for web development and other machines can "see" it using my IP address. I would like to have it so they can access by the name of my computer though. I have no local DNS server so I guess I need to hard code the relationship in each machine? Ideally I'd actually like to be able to use subdomains (which I use locally to avoid annoying .htaccess path problems). i.e. from another machine on the network to go to [URL].

We just upgraded our vmware tools and vmware hardware to vsphere and now I can't authenticate to the samba shares. It prompts for credentials, but it won't take the login. I've been having trouble getting it to map drives on the domain where I work, so I wanted to set up a test system with a similar setup so I can play around with settings without mucking up our network. Only problem is I can't get it configured to even work with XP, which does work on our domain.
When I type \server in the Run box I get the explorer window showing all of the test shares I've set up. But when I try to access them, it says the network path could not be found. Here is my smb.conf file:

I am sure this information is out there somewhere, but Googling apache access.log and hostname does not give you any good leads... so I hope someone here might be able to provide me with a quick answer...I am setting up a cluster of web servers, so I would like to name the access.log and error.log with the hostname of the individual servers to be able to distinguish one from another.
