Fedora :: Back Up Flash Drive
Feb 6, 2011I would like to back up my flash drive in case it gets lost or damaged.the flash drive is bootable with ext2 and a fat partition.the drive is on /dev/sdb1.I think the dd command would back everything up and when restored to a different flash drive everything would boot fine and be as before.I was wondering wow should I use this command to backup and restore or if there is a better option.

Jan 6, 2010I stupidly unplugget my USB-cable, which was connected to my Nokia music phone, just as if I were in Windows. What do I do? I've lost my music on the phone, or, it seems it may be there (the correct mass of data), but my phone now tells me there is no music... Can I recover this? And - what is the correct way to unplug a USB unit in Ubuntu? To make it work, and find the phone/drive - I just typed "sudo lsusb" in the terminal, and it found and opened the memory automatically... How should you unmount the USB, and maybe even how do I get my data back?

Copied them to my ~ and they work fine. The files have the right properties set. I believe the drive may formatted as VFAT/FAT32.

Apr 28, 2010Main reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.
Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.
Ubuntu :: Install The Entire OS To USB Drive?
May 10, 2011I would like to install the entire Ubuntu OS to my USB drive. I know persistence works with it fine, so it would be perfect for traveling and on the go operation. The only question that I have has to do with the booting of the OS. Normally, I know I would have to restart the computer and boot from the USB. Then I came across MojoPac, and I think it is a cool idea. It starts up once the USB is plugged in and there is no need to restart. Would it be possible for me to simply plug in the USB on a Windows PC and have Ubuntu run in a similar fashion?

Sep 30, 2010I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with XP that has a WD 40GB model# WD-XL80SD-2 that has run out of space now matter how hard I try and keep it clean. I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

Dec 3, 2010Does anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.
I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.
OpenSUSE Install :: Installer Can't See Entire Drive?
Mar 26, 2011I am installing openSUSE 11.4 on a Dell D620 on which I used to have Ubuntu/XP dual boot. I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions.The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either.With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about

Jul 11, 2011i am putting a larger drive in my laptop, i have linux mint 10 KDE setup with all the software i need and running just the way i like it. is it possible to actually copy the entire partition to a external drive then place the partition back into my laptop with the new drive in it, and still have it all setup the way i had it?
basically so i dont have to reinstall everything and set it up again.if this is possible could you please explain how i can do it in the simpliest terms at all please.

I am looking for a way to clone and entire drive that has several partitions, along withthe MRB, unpartitioned space and everything else in one step. I have a 500 GB drive that is going out and I want to clone it to a 1 TB drive so I don't have to reinstall 3 different OSs and fix the GRUB. One of the other OSs is on anther drive so I'm not sure that it would work even if I can clone everything exactly. I'm not sure if the drive that is failing is the one with the MBR on it or not. how to do this in GParted or know another good program I can run from a live CD to do this?

I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.

Jun 11, 2011Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

Oct 16, 2010Flash player with Ubuntu is really annoying. Streaming video is jerky and forget about going to fullscreen.I have tried many patches/fixes but no luck. I tried it on 10.10 and 10.4.I'm using a 945gm graphics card. 3 gb of ram.Its a real shame because I really enjoyed using Ubuntu, however i watch a lot of tv via the internet so cannot put up with the bad quality. Even ..... would play properly.

Jun 20, 2010I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

The thing that bugs me the most is the fact that each program has its menu (ie File, Edit etc) in the top panel. This may be fine for netbooks but not my laptop.I just launched Tomboy, which startde with its window in the bottom right of the screen, however to get to the programs menu I have to move the cursor all the way to the top right of the screen - miles.
