Ubuntu :: BackUp Entire Hard Drive To CD/DVD?

Ubuntu :: Copy Entire Hard Drive Including OS?

Sep 30, 2010

I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with XP that has a WD 40GB model# WD-XL80SD-2 that has run out of space now matter how hard I try and keep it clean. I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

Ubuntu :: Reformat The Entire Hard Drive And Install It?

Feb 7, 2010

I have a little experience using Ubuntu with VMWare Fusion on my Mac, but that is about it. My girlfriend is running Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion tx 2000 laptop and she has been having all sorts of trouble with it. Needless to say Windows is eating the computer from the inside out so I recommended that she use Ubuntu, which means that I have to set everything up for her... So my question is how do I go about reformatting the entire hard drive and installing Ubuntu (or another Linux based OS recommended)?

Ubuntu Installation :: ISO Image Of An Entire Hard Drive Running A OS?

Dec 3, 2010

Does anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.

I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

Ubuntu :: Share NTFS External Hard Drive?

Apr 18, 2011

I've been searching for a way to do this with no luck. I've got a 1TB external hard drive I used to share over the network from my Windows desktop -- which is now a Ubuntu desktop.I've tried setting it up as a samba share, and the closest I've gotten is mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory. I've tried the suggestions (editing /etc/security/limits.conf), and that removed the warning I got from testparms but didn't fix the mounting on my mythtv box.

Fedora Networking :: How To Share Hard Drive On Network

Jun 18, 2010

I am trying to share a hard drive on the network. (Essentially the hard drive is for another computer which didn't have the physical space for it so this computer is like a holding place for the hd). I read somewhere that I can use samba to do this. But in all honesty I have no idea what I am doing. What would be the best way to share this drive? Also understand, I know little about networking.

Ubuntu :: Formatting Entire Hard Disk

Nov 26, 2010

I am definitely non-techy, non-geeky, a GUI guy really, but learning steadily - I have been using Linux for a while now, have just moved on to Ubuntu and find it really great to use - I now feel confident enough to have just Ubuntu Linux on my Sony Vaio laptop (at the moment I have dual boot with Windows XP)

however there are just a few Windows programs that I need to use that will not run under Wine

so I would value comments/advice on my 'grand plan'

1) re-format the Windows partition so that Ubuntu can use the entire hard disk (I don't know the best way to acheive this - is it to reinstall Ubuntu using all available disk space? or is it better to just format over the Windows partition and treat it as a second hard disk?)

2) install VirtualBox and use a version of Windows as a guest OS so I can use those Windows programs when I need to - I understand this is easier than having to reboot the computer to get access to Windows

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

Ubuntu :: Install The Entire OS To USB Drive?

May 10, 2011

I would like to install the entire Ubuntu OS to my USB drive. I know persistence works with it fine, so it would be perfect for traveling and on the go operation. The only question that I have has to do with the booting of the OS. Normally, I know I would have to restart the computer and boot from the USB. Then I came across MojoPac, and I think it is a cool idea. It starts up once the USB is plugged in and there is no need to restart. Would it be possible for me to simply plug in the USB on a Windows PC and have Ubuntu run in a similar fashion?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installer Can't See Entire Drive?

Mar 26, 2011

I am installing openSUSE 11.4 on a Dell D620 on which I used to have Ubuntu/XP dual boot. I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions. The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either. With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about
Using some setting in the openSUSE installation menus I don't know aboutUsing windows or a windows CD (I can post the boot errors if needed)
