Ubuntu :: Format External Drive - Copy The Entire Home File Be Drag And Drop
Jun 8, 2010I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.

May 23, 2011I chose the option to encrypt my home folder during installation, but I don't want it encrypted anymore since that makes it impossible to access any files in my home folder unless I'm logged in as that user.
I'm really hoping to avoid reinstalling from scratch just to fix this. Anyone know how to do it?
BTW, it's Ubuntu Server 11.04 32-bit.

Nov 30, 2010lets say I install Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I check the box that says encrypt my home directory, and my password is a randomly generated 10 character password using uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. The next day my laptop gets stolen or something. How hard would it be for someone to decrypt the home directory if that were the goal?

But I had previously done a partition copy of the original 10.10, complete with /home to a spare HDD so now I can copy that /home in place of the new empty /home. What's the best way to do that? Should I use 'dd'? Should I use Nautilus? Or should I partition-copy that copy of the 10.10 onto available space on the thinkpad 11.04, then manipulate the partitions to consolidate? Maybe create a separate /home partition?

May 10, 2011I would like to install the entire Ubuntu OS to my USB drive. I know persistence works with it fine, so it would be perfect for traveling and on the go operation. The only question that I have has to do with the booting of the OS. Normally, I know I would have to restart the computer and boot from the USB. Then I came across MojoPac, and I think it is a cool idea. It starts up once the USB is plugged in and there is no need to restart. Would it be possible for me to simply plug in the USB on a Windows PC and have Ubuntu run in a similar fashion?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installer Can't See Entire Drive?
Mar 26, 2011I am installing openSUSE 11.4 on a Dell D620 on which I used to have Ubuntu/XP dual boot. I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions.The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either.With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about

I am looking for something that would BackUp my entire hard drive to a CD/DVD (preferably bootable) --so-- if I crash -or- want to clone to another hard drive I would have the ability to a 'Restore' of the CD/DVD and simply be able to load the CD/DVD to an old / new hard drive and be back-in-business without a lot of hassle.

Sep 30, 2010I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with XP that has a WD 40GB model# WD-XL80SD-2 that has run out of space now matter how hard I try and keep it clean. I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

Dec 3, 2010Does anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.
I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

I know how to mount each partition, but what I want is to mount sda, not sda1 or sda3. Just sda.So later, I want to make a copy of MBR of sda.As I know first 512 bytes from sda1 are not the same like first 512 bytes from sda.Thats why I want to mount sda and with dd, copy the first 512 bytes.The problem is how to mount sda, if some partition are ntfs and other are ext3?

Fedora Installation :: New F14 Has Taken The Entire Disc Almost?
Dec 28, 2010I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb
