I'm having trouble running programs from a flash drive. They're small self-compiled console programs my CS teacher wanted me to try out. I get "bash: permission denied" every time. Copied them to my ~ and they work fine. The files have the right properties set. I believe the drive may formatted as VFAT/FAT32.

I know often with a distro you can run the LiveCD/Live USB version from a USB Flash Drive. I understand maybe I can do that but want I want to do is do an actual install. Is this possible?
I assume I'd need to download the distro to my netbook under Mandriva and then after do an install and choose the USB Flash Drive after inserted as the hard drive to install to. Then when I boot up the computer I'd just choose the USB Drive as the bootup drive.
Is this possible though? Would it damage my Mandriva install? Like I said I know I can use the USB Flash Drive likely as a bootup/Live CD type of solution but since I will be using it semi-regularly and saving data at times I'd like to use it simply like another hard drive. Is this possible?
I just tried Centos 5.2 Live starting from a 2 GB USB flash drive. Everything seems to run fine, fast, stable - except for that the persistent feature is not working. I created the USB from Windows using the Centos 5.2 LiveCD image and the current version of Live USB Creator (3.7), and declared a 256 MB persistent space.
This persistence feature had worked before with Fedora 11 but the system resulted unstable, kernel panic.... Now Centos has been solid for hours in a row... but the file where persistence should be reflected remains untouched with the initial creation timestamp. When rebooting, every change in config, file created etc gets lost.
I have a USB drive of 4 GB and I want to make the drive as bootable. I used the command /sbin/mkbootdisk --device /dev/sdb1 "kernal version" ( sdb1 is my pen drive).When i ran this cmd,it gave me an error saying not enough space to write.

About 50 seconds compared to normal of less than 10 seconds. The dots going across the screen is like watching paint dry.Data partition not accessible to Windows machines.
The following adaptation of the Wiki content article Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS by Phil Schaffner overcomes the aforementioned short falls. I'd like to install centos from a USB stick on to a hard drive and also include a custom kickstart on the USB stick to run post-build scripts or install additional packages, which the additional packages would also be on the USB stick..Are there any howto's already written?

I've been told that I need to add a USB controller. My CentOS is running as a VMWARE guest in WS7 loaded on a Vista host. My physical hardware is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. I've been told I have to add a USB controller before I can mount. Can anybody give me some direction with this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I just installed Fedora 11 and then followed the directions here to add the adobe repo. Also, added the rpm fusion repo. But, when I search for 'flash-plugin' i get a nothing found reply? Did I miss a step or do something out of order?

The reason I asked is I used cd-writing programs (Brasero, k3b, etc) for music cds to rip into lossless formats (AAC and FLAC), and it sometimes does not come out right from ripping. View 9 Replies View RelatedI exchanged my CDROM drive for DVD drive. The DVD is recognized in the BIOS (will boot to DVD install disc) and in CentOS 5.2 (when I list the hardware), but CentOS must still think it's a CDROM drive. When I run VLC in a terminal it kicks back these errors code...
I think this means that "hdc" is linked to a CDROM configuration somewhere, but I don't know where to find it to change it (or out it). It also appears thee is no DVD module loading. (Of course, I could be making poor guesses.)
I thought there might be something in the fstab, but it doesn't appear there is anything there (for the CDROM or DVD drive)?
Is there somewhere else I should be looking? /dev/*** ?
- 160gb is where i install CentOS (pretty much the hard drive for operation system) - Lets call this drive A
- Two 1TB drives run in RAID 1, using software RAID (this is where i will store personal data, pictures, movies, music, etc...) - Lets call this RAID 1 setup drive B
I am planning to run a virtual Win Server 2008 using Xen and have that be my domain controller. I will use samba to share drive B and have the network drive map when user login to the domain.
- If for some reasons i have to reinstall CentOS, this pretty much mean drive A will be formatted and reinstalled. Knowing my self i probably will goof up some config in CentOS and will need to reinstall the OS to fix it. Since drive B will be the centralize location for my home network, i dont want to lose the data. Will i be able to re-setup the RAID setup of drive B and still have all the data stored on it intact after a reinstall?
- Is the separation of OS drive and data drive recommended?
- Are there any better way to accomplish my setup? I am pretty much just looking to make a linux file server and windows on client's end.
I would like to back up my flash drive in case it gets lost or damaged.the flash drive is bootable with ext2 and a fat partition.the drive is on /dev/sdb1.I think the dd command would back everything up and when restored to a different flash drive everything would boot fine and be as before.I was wondering wow should I use this command to backup and restore or if there is a better option.

Normally when I remove it I unmount it first, but the last time I just unplugged it. After I unplugged it, it started not working.
When I put it in a windows machine, it shows up as drive E: but says "no disk" when I try to access it.
In my Ubuntu machine I can see it as USBDrive under Places > Computer, but it's unmounted. When I click mount nothing happens.
