Ubuntu / Apple :: Will Multitouch Work If Install As Native OS?
Feb 16, 2010
I hate OSX. I have however gotten very used to the multitouch trackpad on my aluminum MacbookPro. So, I would like to blow away OSX and install Ubuntu native. I was wondering if I will loose multitouch capability if I do this though. Mainly 2 finger tap for right click, and two finger scroll. My MacbookPro is rev 5,2.Are there any other issues I should think about before taking the plunge?

I tried to boot from the 9.04 Live CD on my Titanium Powerbook 550mhz. It just comes up as various grayscale lines. Very strange because i know of no problem with its ATI video. OTOH, I was able to boot the same cdrw and install onto my G4imac with no problems, even though it has nvidia graphics card.
Any ideas how to proceed in getting it to work on the TiBook?

Neither Ubuntu's Unity or KDE respond to the function keys on a regular Apple USB keyboard. I can plug in a non-Apple keyboard and they work just fine. What needs to be changed or configure so that F1 and company on the Apple keyboard work as on other keyboards?

there is notebook Asus M51T Series, Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic OS (regular upgrades), USB MIDI-keyboard Korg Nanokey, external USB sound card Native Instruments Audio 2 Dj and USB-MIDI-controller Numark Omni Control. With Nanokey there are no problems. Audio 2 Dj does not work normally, Omni Control at all has no driver in Ubuntu, if I have correctly understood.
For example, any application (for example a player) starts an audiostream. The sound is only the first some seconds. After that it turns to short series of clicks. Clicks chaotically appear and for lack of any prospective audiostreams. Thus built in sound card works normally.

I didn't delete my old extension and recently mounted it so I could retrieve the data. I was wondering if there was any way I could make it the extension to my current native without deleting any of the data? Or if attaching it as an extension was at all possible at this point.

I installed Koala 9.10 with Wubi, and have liked it enough to give it a "native" installation on a partition. I've been looking around at forums, and it seems the most attractive way, with LVPM, hasn't been tested officially with 9.10, and I can't find a post of anyone that has.
So, my question is, does anyone know the best way to upgrade my install to its own partition? My drive currently has 2 primary partitions (main Windows Vista OS, and a recovery) and one extended with a logical drive. I don't know whether to try the LVPM method, or try to just uninstall Wubi and install 9.10 after from the Live CD. But, the reason I went the Wubi route in the first place was the install/Live CD would hang when I got to the screen with the options to check the install disk (I had previously checked the hash, and it was fine), proceed without changing disk, etc. I think that is a problem with the install getting confused with my multiple drives/card readers, and not being able to find the correct one. Wubi had a similar problem giving me something like "please insert disk into drive X:", and I would have to just click over and over, each time X changing from one drive letter/number to the next, until the install just continued when it found the right drive.

I've heard about the multitouch out in ubuntu 10.10 and have a touchscreen but it doesn't seem to work on it no matter what I do. I have googled everything on it and still no luck. I got an acer eee and use windows most of the time because of this barrier does anyone know how to fix this? Is anyone else having the same problem as me?

I dont get my multitouch screen working. I have a Stantum screen (1f87:0002) and a GMA500 video driver with emgd and Xorg 1.9 I get a lot of output from evtest, xinput list-props, mtview etc. but no output from gesturetest or geistest. I have no idea where to proceed. (after successfully getting utouch-compiz working a second finger touch was not recognised as next single-input anymore)

I've been working on this for weeks, and I can't get my egalax touchscreen to work with gestures in Natty. I believe I have been booting in Unity, but have tried in the traditional Gnome-top as well.
The screen just works like a one button mouse. I get out put from the mtdev-test, but nothing from gesture test. I've tried with and without the egalax-multitouch-driver-common installed.
There is no xorg.conf, but I don't think there should be one.

I just found out that many Synaptics touchpads are capable of multi-touch and it's possible to do 2-finger scrolling and more.I have enabled this functionality in windows and I am sure now that the touchpad inside my laptop is capable of that.In Fedora 13 (64-bit), however, I was unable to make it working. I found a guide for Linux (Ubuntu) right here:URL... In Ubuntu it multitouch worked without problems after following the guide.
I first thought that I screwed something up on my Fedora and downloaded/ran live Fedora 13 64-bit disk to see if this trick will work with Fedora intact. After trying that guide in live Fedora CD I quickly found out that I couldn't enable multitouch the same way as on Ubuntu.I have no idea what could be different. Both Fedora and Ubuntu had Synaptics driver installed on live CDs (and on my installed Fedora too).

I switch over from old laptop to a new one. This one has now a multitouch touchpad wich annoys me. With my old laptop i could select a text and paste it with middle mouse button or with 2 buttons enabled from the touchpad.
Now i moved my existing ssd drive from my old laptop to my new one, so the software and configuration is the same.
I can pasting nothing anymore by pushing in left&right on the touchpad. Due the multitouch i presume? Copy/Paste aint working anymore with urxvt. I would like to get this behaviour back because it's plain simple, fast and works almost everywhere.
C/P Still works with the middle mouse buttons but i don't use a mouse all the time.
How to get pasting work with multitouch?

I'm fairly new to touch screens. I'm having a look on Amazon at multi touch monitors like an HP 2310ti and it seems everybody just accepts that Windows 7 can handle it out of the box.
How does it work? I can't find any resources explaining how the PC receives the input from the touch screen.
Do I need to connect the PC with the monitor via USB, or is there wireless/bluetooth technology embedded in the monitor like in a wireless keyboard/mouse? How does Linux handle such a monitor out of the box? Does it recognize something like 2 connected mouse devices? I read about a few projects trying to implement this stuff in Xorg/GTK, but it seems to be pretty experimental at current state (because there is little information, if any, on this topic).

So I have been testing out the Ubuntu Live CD 10.04 on my PowerBook G4 and most everything seems to be working fine (with the exception of wireless and the dim/brighten buttons.) When connected to the internet via ethernet cable, I was able to download the broadcom hardware (I guess needed to make wireless work??) This is pictured below. However, even after the hardware thing was activated, when I unplugged the ethernet cord and clicked on the icon for wireless internet under wireless, it says, "Device not ready." Can you get wireless to work with the live cd?

I can get ubuntu to work fine on its own (except for sound, a problem for another day), but I can't get dual booting to work.I'm using this page as a guide:URl...I started out with a clean OSX snow leopard install. I ran bootcamp and shrank my 320G hfs+ file system to 160G. I installed rEFIt, and rebooted twice (you don't see the menu after rebooting once). Then I booted from my 10.04 CD, and deleted the partition created by bootcamp using gparted. When I run the installer and tell it to use the largest continuous space, it makes the / file system in partition #5, and the swap partition in partition #5.
I figured that might cause problems with a MBR partition table, so I partitioned manually, and set up / in sda3 and swap in sda4.When I tried to configure the installation of the bootloader, I had a menu of possible places to install it. I picked /dev/sda3, but then the OK button was grayed out.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) on my MacBook 3,1 (1GB memory). Most things work perfectly on install, and I've got the iSight working now too!
However, although suspend works fine, hibernate does not. When I try to hibernate, the screen goes blank with the back light on for a few seconds, then the screen goes off completely for about 0.1 of a scond and I hear the optical drive whirr (like it does when booting), and then about 4 or 5 seconds after that it finally powers off.
Then, when I restart, I see the rEFIt menu, then the GRUB menu and it appears to boot like normal and *not* resume from hibernate!
I'm not sure what log I should look in? When I look in /var/log/pm-suspend.log the last line says "performing hibernate", but there's nothing about even attempting to resume.
UPDATE: Forgot to mention, I have a swap partition that is larger than 1GB.
UPDATE 2: Also, after attempting to hibernate, when the system restarts, WiFi has been disabled -- I have to double-tap (right-click) on the WiFi icon and re-enable it. I *think* this is because the hibernate process disables networking, but it then fails to re-enable it because is fails to resume.

These forums won't let me post using an iPad. I can visit this page, no problem, but when I try to add or edit a post, it just doesn't work. The edit page appears, but when I tap in the main textarea field, nothing happens. I expect the virtual keyboard to slide into view and a cursor to appear. This does not happen. In fact, if the keyboard is visible prior to tapping in the text area, then the keyboard slides out of view when the textarea is tapped. It's kind of awkward, having to wait until I get near a desktop machine before I post anything.

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my MacBook Pro 5,5 for about a week now. And I've noticed that the screen brightness adjustment does not work. When I click the F1 and F2 buttons I get the notification that it's changing but it doesn't actually change it. So I added the brightness adjustment to the panel and it won't let me move the toggle thingy. Has anybody else had this problem? All my other F keys work fine.

how to get the Eclipse IDE to work on powerpc? I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on an eMac G4 1.25, and installed eclipse CDT from the repos, which pulled in a ton of stuff with it. Starting eclipse results in nothing but the initial splash screen. A process called Java takes the top spot in the task list and sits there burning up CPU to max it out at 100%. It appears stuck there for good. It is a pretty virgin system except for the automatic updates. It was just installed yesterday.

I have a 2.4 Ghz iMac from 2007 with Core II Duo processor and ATi 2600 HD graphics card. I had OSX (SL) and Windows 7 installed earlier. To avoid pressing ALT key to get OSX started, I installed rEFIT which gave me the idea to triple boot system with LINUX. So I repartitioned the system and installed Unity (Ubuntu 11.04) on it. The installation was smooth but somehow bluetooth did not work. I am using the proprietary ATi/AMD driver from Hardware Extra in Unity and the system works great (even 3D cube works fine). I though of upgrading Kernel to 2.6.39.0 but the system gives an error while loading the files.
The error is primarily with flgrx driver. Keeps giving [Fail] result. When I had replaced the proprietary driver with ATi open source driver, I could upgrade the kernel to 3.0. The bluetooth gat "ENABLED" but would not connect to Magic Mouse. Now I have reinstalled the system with 2.6.38.8 Kernel and keeping it simple as the earlier efforts required 6-7 reinstallations of Unity. Please offer solutions if bluetooth can be enabled with present Kernel or how to safely upgrade the kernel without loading the Open souce ATi driver. I have already tried "sudo service bluetooth restart" and it work but I have to do it every time I reboot the system, hence not desired.

I have been using the information provided here: [URL] to fix some issues after installation of Karmic 64-bit on a MBP 5,5. The solutions for wireless and sound work, but not together - one seems to break the other. Here is what I did:
1. Followed directions for fixing wireless here: [URL] (AirPort) This works fine.
2. Followed directions for fixing sound, which seems to update the kernel, here: [URL] Sound This also works, but then wireless does not work.
If I boot into the older kernel version, I have wireless again, but no sound. If I boot into the newer kernel and try to use the wireless solution above its says I already have that package installed - yet no go with wireless.
