General :: Upgrade Wubi Install Of 9.10 To Native With LVPM?
Feb 19, 2010
I installed Koala 9.10 with Wubi, and have liked it enough to give it a "native" installation on a partition. I've been looking around at forums, and it seems the most attractive way, with LVPM, hasn't been tested officially with 9.10, and I can't find a post of anyone that has.
So, my question is, does anyone know the best way to upgrade my install to its own partition? My drive currently has 2 primary partitions (main Windows Vista OS, and a recovery) and one extended with a logical drive. I don't know whether to try the LVPM method, or try to just uninstall Wubi and install 9.10 after from the Live CD. But, the reason I went the Wubi route in the first place was the install/Live CD would hang when I got to the screen with the options to check the install disk (I had previously checked the hash, and it was fine), proceed without changing disk, etc. I think that is a problem with the install getting confused with my multiple drives/card readers, and not being able to find the correct one. Wubi had a similar problem giving me something like "please insert disk into drive X:", and I would have to just click over and over, each time X changing from one drive letter/number to the next, until the install just continued when it found the right drive.

Will the LVPM utility move Wubi 10.04 onto a dedicated partition?
[URL]
The website hasn't been updated since 8.04.
If not, is there a resource that will assist me in moving my data, settings, keyring (and programs if possible) from the Wubi install to a clean install on a new partition?
I'm planning for a transition from Lucid 10.04 Wubi to a dedicated partition for Lucid Studio 10.04, but have been using Wubi for emails, XAMPP web development, etc.

I had a wubi install- but it only let me dedicate 60 GB. I quickly ran out of that available space and decided I'd better try one of those tools to move my stuff on a partition of it's own.
I just used LVPM to transfer Wubi to the HDD, and.. it worked. Almost.
All I had to do was edit my grub file. I did that in Wubi, opened the menu.lst file with gksudo and added this just before windows: (I want Ubuntu to be first on the list, ofc)
Code:
# This is a divider, added to separate the menu items below from the Debian
# ones.
# title Other operating systems:
# root
## Added By Human Being
code....
(Please tell me if anything up there isn't needed, is wrong, or if I left something out..)Now it makes me press "S" before I can see the login screen at boot-up.
I want the quickest boot possible for Ubuntu, with a way for us to use Windows if needed.
It's looking for an Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 CD, and I have the 10.10 Alternate AMD64 DVD.. and that message doesn't respond at all... I can press "S", and then it goes to the login screen, all works fine. I can update, I looked to see if the check-box for a CD upgrade was checked, but it wasn't.. I ticked the box (just for science), put in the alt-disk, and.... again it waited forever.. So that must be the wrong CD. Unticked it.. Also I just updated this morning fine. Still, that 'Press "S" to skip' at boot up is annoying
Do I have to download the standard Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 ISO again.. (before it kept freezing), or is that futile.. I mean, all it's going to do is downgrade, (if it does anything..) right?

I installed through Wubi and in update manager 10.10 has appeared,
I have two questions:
1) Will this install in the Wubi directory? (c://ubuntu) or do i have to partition it first? If i do, please tell me a link how because the one i followed on the wiki said it didn't support 10.04 wubi. I would prefer to upgrade the Wubi install though
2) Will upgrading remove any of my user files? I installed themes i want to keep, and i wouldn't want to loose them.

i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.
I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?
Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??

I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

I have been using Ubuntu for several months and am "getting to grips" with it. However, recently I needed to renew my hdd. I used recovery disks and back-ups of my "data" - all went well and Vista runs fine and I can access my "stuff". But when I install Ubuntu (Wubi) using a pendrive OR a cd - Ubuntu seems to install OK. But after I reboot my pc and get the option to select an OS - Vista OR Ubuntu - I cannot move the highlighted option with the arrow keys on my keyboard so it defaults (after 20 seconds) to Vista every time? I would like to try the newer (10.10) Ubuntu Release.

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

I had a 10.04 Wubi install on my Win7 notebook. I selected the option to upgrade to 10.10 from update manager. It downloaded all the updates, but reported that due to some problem, only a partial upgrade will be possible. I agreed. And now, when I select Ubuntu from the startup OS list, it just shows a blank screen and restarts within 3-5 seconds. What do I do??

I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.
Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files
If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.
And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.

I didn't delete my old extension and recently mounted it so I could retrieve the data. I was wondering if there was any way I could make it the extension to my current native without deleting any of the data? Or if attaching it as an extension was at all possible at this point.

I hate OSX. I have however gotten very used to the multitouch trackpad on my aluminum MacbookPro. So, I would like to blow away OSX and install Ubuntu native. I was wondering if I will loose multitouch capability if I do this though. Mainly 2 finger tap for right click, and two finger scroll. My MacbookPro is rev 5,2.Are there any other issues I should think about before taking the plunge?

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

I want to set something up so I can have a pen drive and do all of the following:
1) Boot linux from the pen drive on systems that support usb boot devices.
2) boot from a CD that switches over to the usb drive and releases the cd (for systems that do not support USB booting)
3) Optionally run the same pendrive linux installation from windows
a) Huge preference for NO vmware or other emulation/virtualization environments
b) something like colinux or topoligilinux
c) big prefence for doing this with linux mint or at least ubuntu
d) bonus if I can do the windows part without admin priviledges on highly restricted systems like library computers
e) worst case scenario maybe could set it up in one of these ways
1) have cygwin and a seperate linux distro and just mount the home folder of one from the other - but prefer to not waste space duplicating applications etc.
2) I wanted to put a two and three here but I'm out of ideas.

I am interested in running Linux on my Mac Pro (8-core, 24 GB RAM).
What are the main caveats one should expect? Can all hardware be used natively after booting, say Linux or FreebSD?
Does Solaris run on this type of machine?
My use case is mostly Mail, instant messaging, web browsing and network simulation (hence this machine) and I value interactivity under full system load the most. How is interactivity under full load in Linux? My experiences with Debian "lenny" showed delays when task switching of up to 1.5 seconds. May I should look at FreeBSD?

Is there a native Linux application that can interface with mint.com? I like the website, but I would also like to have that information stored locally so I can view it anytime, even if I am not online. Also, is there anyway I can just bypass mint.com altogether and enter in all of my accounts directly and have it periodically update their information?
