View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have been testing out the Ubuntu Live CD 10.04 on my PowerBook G4 and most everything seems to be working fine (with the exception of wireless and the dim/brighten buttons.) When connected to the internet via ethernet cable, I was able to download the broadcom hardware (I guess needed to make wireless work??) This is pictured below. However, even after the hardware thing was activated, when I unplugged the ethernet cord and clicked on the icon for wireless internet under wireless, it says, "Device not ready." Can you get wireless to work with the live cd?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can get ubuntu to work fine on its own (except for sound, a problem for another day), but I can't get dual booting to work.I'm using this page as a guide:URl...I started out with a clean OSX snow leopard install. I ran bootcamp and shrank my 320G hfs+ file system to 160G. I installed rEFIt, and rebooted twice (you don't see the menu after rebooting once). Then I booted from my 10.04 CD, and deleted the partition created by bootcamp using gparted. When I run the installer and tell it to use the largest continuous space, it makes the / file system in partition #5, and the swap partition in partition #5.
I figured that might cause problems with a MBR partition table, so I partitioned manually, and set up / in sda3 and swap in sda4.When I tried to configure the installation of the bootloader, I had a menu of possible places to install it. I picked /dev/sda3, but then the OK button was grayed out.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) on my MacBook 3,1 (1GB memory). Most things work perfectly on install, and I've got the iSight working now too!
However, although suspend works fine, hibernate does not. When I try to hibernate, the screen goes blank with the back light on for a few seconds, then the screen goes off completely for about 0.1 of a scond and I hear the optical drive whirr (like it does when booting), and then about 4 or 5 seconds after that it finally powers off.
Then, when I restart, I see the rEFIt menu, then the GRUB menu and it appears to boot like normal and *not* resume from hibernate!
I'm not sure what log I should look in? When I look in /var/log/pm-suspend.log the last line says "performing hibernate", but there's nothing about even attempting to resume.
UPDATE: Forgot to mention, I have a swap partition that is larger than 1GB.
UPDATE 2: Also, after attempting to hibernate, when the system restarts, WiFi has been disabled -- I have to double-tap (right-click) on the WiFi icon and re-enable it. I *think* this is because the hibernate process disables networking, but it then fails to re-enable it because is fails to resume.
These forums won't let me post using an iPad. I can visit this page, no problem, but when I try to add or edit a post, it just doesn't work. The edit page appears, but when I tap in the main textarea field, nothing happens. I expect the virtual keyboard to slide into view and a cursor to appear. This does not happen. In fact, if the keyboard is visible prior to tapping in the text area, then the keyboard slides out of view when the textarea is tapped. It's kind of awkward, having to wait until I get near a desktop machine before I post anything.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my MacBook Pro 5,5 for about a week now. And I've noticed that the screen brightness adjustment does not work. When I click the F1 and F2 buttons I get the notification that it's changing but it doesn't actually change it. So I added the brightness adjustment to the panel and it won't let me move the toggle thingy. Has anybody else had this problem? All my other F keys work fine.
View 4 Replies View Relatedhow to get the Eclipse IDE to work on powerpc? I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on an eMac G4 1.25, and installed eclipse CDT from the repos, which pulled in a ton of stuff with it. Starting eclipse results in nothing but the initial splash screen. A process called Java takes the top spot in the task list and sits there burning up CPU to max it out at 100%. It appears stuck there for good. It is a pretty virgin system except for the automatic updates. It was just installed yesterday.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 2.4 Ghz iMac from 2007 with Core II Duo processor and ATi 2600 HD graphics card. I had OSX (SL) and Windows 7 installed earlier. To avoid pressing ALT key to get OSX started, I installed rEFIT which gave me the idea to triple boot system with LINUX. So I repartitioned the system and installed Unity (Ubuntu 11.04) on it. The installation was smooth but somehow bluetooth did not work. I am using the proprietary ATi/AMD driver from Hardware Extra in Unity and the system works great (even 3D cube works fine). I though of upgrading Kernel to 2.6.39.0 but the system gives an error while loading the files.
The error is primarily with flgrx driver. Keeps giving [Fail] result. When I had replaced the proprietary driver with ATi open source driver, I could upgrade the kernel to 3.0. The bluetooth gat "ENABLED" but would not connect to Magic Mouse. Now I have reinstalled the system with 2.6.38.8 Kernel and keeping it simple as the earlier efforts required 6-7 reinstallations of Unity. Please offer solutions if bluetooth can be enabled with present Kernel or how to safely upgrade the kernel without loading the Open souce ATi driver. I have already tried "sudo service bluetooth restart" and it work but I have to do it every time I reboot the system, hence not desired.
Just discovered one more thing with my installation. Builtin iSight doesn't work out of the box on Macbook Pro 5.5 as it says on the wiki.Device is not found in either Cheese or Skype.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to boot from the 9.04 Live CD on my Titanium Powerbook 550mhz. It just comes up as various grayscale lines. Very strange because i know of no problem with its ATI video. OTOH, I was able to boot the same cdrw and install onto my G4imac with no problems, even though it has nvidia graphics card.
Any ideas how to proceed in getting it to work on the TiBook?
I hate OSX. I have however gotten very used to the multitouch trackpad on my aluminum MacbookPro. So, I would like to blow away OSX and install Ubuntu native. I was wondering if I will loose multitouch capability if I do this though. Mainly 2 finger tap for right click, and two finger scroll. My MacbookPro is rev 5,2.Are there any other issues I should think about before taking the plunge?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using the information provided here: [URL] to fix some issues after installation of Karmic 64-bit on a MBP 5,5. The solutions for wireless and sound work, but not together - one seems to break the other. Here is what I did:
1. Followed directions for fixing wireless here: [URL] (AirPort) This works fine.
2. Followed directions for fixing sound, which seems to update the kernel, here: [URL] Sound This also works, but then wireless does not work.
If I boot into the older kernel version, I have wireless again, but no sound. If I boot into the newer kernel and try to use the wireless solution above its says I already have that package installed - yet no go with wireless.
I'm having a problem getting the apple remote on my Macbook 2,1 to work with Karmic and am looking for a little advice. I have followed the guide here [URl] and utilised the extended .lircrc in the first post of this thread [URL]linked to by the guide however I cannot get any action from my remote (it does work in OSX).
The problem, I believe, lies in where Gnome needs to start irexec and irxevent. Running irexrc -d from a terminal gives no output but I can also not find a process running after launch.Running irxevent -d returns 'irxevent: could not connect to socket irxevent: No such file or directory'I have also installed gnome-lirc-properties which (until a recent reboot) reported that there was no IR daemon running.
I am dual-booting Karmic/OS X. I have a MacBook Pro 5,1. When using the keyboard to change the backlight, the graphic in the top left does move to indicate a higher brightness (albeit, it moves extremely slowly).
I, of course, have all the necessary drivers installed.
I have all the packages I needed from the Mactel repository. This has been a problem within Karmic since I've put it on my MBP. There have been several updates from the Mactel repository concerning the Nvidia backlight package (I don't remember exactly what that package is called though). I hope each time that it will fix what is going on, but obviously, it hasn't.
Is there any program that I could use to otherwise change the backlight? When I'm sitting outside it's really difficult to see what's on my screen as it also doesn't automatically respond to the change in environmental brightness by making the screen brighter.
I looked through the wiki and for some reason I cannot get my brightness controls to work.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I installed Lucid on my G4 Cube and now am trying to figure out how to make the video work properly.Right now it is in low graphics mode, which is not pleasing whatsoever.I have the 17" Studio Display (LCD, rev b) connected to it and it has the ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card.I went into the xorg.conf file and there was nothing there. I tried the suggestions for the 15" display but that results in the x server crashing, so i undid that.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust bought a new Mac Mini, no optical drive. Using a USB drive, I can get to the EFI grub menu, and boot to the installer menu, but from there the keyboard (USB) doesn't work at all. I've tried every combination of boot flag and am at my wits end. Booting using BIOS results in a "Boot error" message, no grub.Update:Using the 11.04 amd64 iso, I have a slightly different problem. Eventually after grub, I get kicked to a minimal shell (dropbear maybe?) with the complaint "unable to find a live medium." However, from other searches, this may be an issue with a corrupt USB disk, and not a problem with the Mac/EFI boot process.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.
well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..
Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.
I'm running Fedora12 on PS3 and try to use bluetooth keyboard of Apple Wireless Keyboard. bluetooth-properties command works fine and Apple Wireless Keyboard is found and paired correctly then registered. But I can not input any character when I type keyboard. It works file on other Fedora12 on x86 desktop PC. Do I need extra setup for PS3?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook 2,1 since 2007. Last week my hard drive just died, so I decided to replace it with a new one, no problems with that. The problem came when I had to install an operative system, because my DVD drive has been broken for a year and a half now. I know we can easily install MacOSX from an external usb drive, but I don't have a big enough pendrive at the moment. So I went for Ubuntu. I have managed to get an Ubuntu 10.10 live usb stick working like charm, if anyone is interested. I just downloaded the latest i386 iso and followed this advice by pxwpxw for the 32bit EFI.
The only thing I had to change in the boot.cfg was the name of the iso and -very important- changed initrd.gz for initrd.lz. The live usb works great. But I decided to do an installation on the hard drive. I installed it using the whole hard drive and didn't get any errors. But when I boot the macbook it doesn't detect anything. I guess I need an EFI bootloader or something to make it work. I've tried to follow this guide but it seems to be intended for someone who already has MacOSX and the Ubuntu installation working. I just want to install a bootloader or whatever I need from the "outside" (from the live usb I'm using). I tried to just throw reFit into the main hard drive's root folder but it doesn't work. I think that maybe creating an HFS+ partition and installing reFit in it may work, but I don't think I can create that kind of partition from the Ubuntu usb and I also need a working MacOSX to run the enable.sh. I've also read of elilo but I've seen that it hasn't been updated for 3 years
Is there a way to play HD Apple trailers? I am able to play regular trailers but not the ones in HD.
