Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Get ISight Working On 11.04?

May 6, 2011

I can't get the iSight working on 11.04. I've extracted the driver and put it in /lib/firmware, shutdown and restarted as per instructions. I even tried downloading the latest version (1.6) of isight-firmware-tools from source but that didn't make a difference.

lsusb still says:

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 05ac:8300 Apple, Inc. Built-in iSight (no firmware loaded)
and ls -l /lib/firmware/isight.fw says:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10871 2011-05-06 11:43 /lib/firmware/isight.fw
I can't see any relevant messages in dmesg.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook 2,1 Maverick ISight?

Oct 30, 2010

I'm new to Linux, and I tried to use my iSight camera (especially for skype). It didn't look so complicated and I saw many posts about that so I decided to do it myself, but I can't get it to work.

I got the AppleUSBVideoSupport file, but when i type ift-extract AppleUSBVideoSUpport in the terminal (using Guake), it tells me : what does that mean ? DOes anybody have the same problem ?

Ubuntu / Apple :: ISight Not Working On Macbook 4,1 And 11.04?

Jul 29, 2011

Although I had 11.04 running smoothly on my Macbook 4,1 (OS X 10.5) since it came out, I never bothered to actually test the iSight camera. So I fired up Cheese, but it claimed that it could not detect any webcam installed. gstreamer-properties does not list iSight either.I followed this article step by step: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ma...am/AppleiSight. After installing the firmware I pulled from my OS X partition, neither Cheese nor gstreamer picked up on my camera. As a matter of fact, I investigated further and realized that /dev/video0 does not even exist. The firmware seems to be recognized by the kernel, according to dmesg:Quote:

usbcore: registered new interface driver isight_firmwareI repeated the procedure in the article again after purging the firmware-tools package, but no dice. I resorted to booting back into OS X to use my webcam, but as you can imagine this is not very convenient heh.Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here?EDIT: I ended up uninstalling the firmwire, since it caused my Macbook to become unresponsive (purple screen of death?) every time after coming out of sleep. I haven't found a solution for that either. For now I guess I'll keep my OS X on a partition to use iSight until something comes up to resolve this issue.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Throw ReFit Into Main Hard Drive's Root Folder But Doesn't Work

Dec 7, 2010

I have a Macbook 2,1 since 2007. Last week my hard drive just died, so I decided to replace it with a new one, no problems with that. The problem came when I had to install an operative system, because my DVD drive has been broken for a year and a half now. I know we can easily install MacOSX from an external usb drive, but I don't have a big enough pendrive at the moment. So I went for Ubuntu. I have managed to get an Ubuntu 10.10 live usb stick working like charm, if anyone is interested. I just downloaded the latest i386 iso and followed this advice by pxwpxw for the 32bit EFI.

The only thing I had to change in the boot.cfg was the name of the iso and -very important- changed initrd.gz for initrd.lz. The live usb works great. But I decided to do an installation on the hard drive. I installed it using the whole hard drive and didn't get any errors. But when I boot the macbook it doesn't detect anything. I guess I need an EFI bootloader or something to make it work. I've tried to follow this guide but it seems to be intended for someone who already has MacOSX and the Ubuntu installation working. I just want to install a bootloader or whatever I need from the "outside" (from the live usb I'm using). I tried to just throw reFit into the main hard drive's root folder but it doesn't work. I think that maybe creating an HFS+ partition and installing reFit in it may work, but I don't think I can create that kind of partition from the Ubuntu usb and I also need a working MacOSX to run the enable.sh. I've also read of elilo but I've seen that it hasn't been updated for 3 years

Ubuntu / Apple :: OSX Doesn't Start Anymore

Feb 1, 2010

I tried to install Ubuntu on a USB HDD on my Macbok Pro 5.3. Everything seemed to be fine, but while rebooting the computer, OSX doesn't start anymore. So, I would say I erased the boot sector of the internal HDD or something similar but I'm not an expert. My internal HDD seems to be fine: One 200 MB FAT32 partiton partition labeled EFI and with the boot flag, One HFS+ partition for the system. I tried to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD and run the Disk Utility to make a "repair". The repair was fine, but the Mac still doesn't boot anymore. (Forget Ubuntu, it's only OSX related, I'll try again Ubuntu only when I'll be able to boot OSX again).

Ubuntu / Apple :: 10.04 CD Doesn't Boot On MacBook 5,2?

May 14, 2010

I downloaded and burned the 32-bit desktop edition of Lucid Lynx (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) but can't boot it on my MacBook model 5,2. I've installed rEFIt. When I boot from the CD holding down the C key on hearing the boot chime, Ubuntu doesn't boot. A purple background with a keyboard and the accessibility icon shows up, then the screen goes black with a blinking underscore at the top left corner. After a little while, the marker disappears and the screen goes black. After that, nothing happens. I left my MacBook that way for a couple of minutes, but still nothing happened. Any clues about what the problem may be? Should I wait longer at the black screen? I burned the CD at low speed (16x) and verified the disc after burning.

Everything that i've looked at says to change the setting in power management but there's no option there for what to do when the lid closes. I've also checked out gconf-editor and the setting appear to be right in that... so I don't know what the issue could be.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook Air 3.2 Doesn't Boot Usb Installer?

Nov 2, 2010

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on new Apple Macbook Air 3.2 with USB key. I'm able to partition and install REFIT fine, but when I tell REFIT to boot from the USB key, it goes to black and says "boot error".I then tried dd'ing the USB key partition to a local partition on the Macbook Air and booting that via a suggestion from another thread. It actually started loading the purple Ubuntu bootsplash-looking background then went straight to black even before the screen to select "try" or "install". Anyone know how to get the install USB to boot?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Kubuntu Doesn't Display Properly / What To Do?

Feb 26, 2011

I have an Apple iBook (ancient I know) and whenever I boot from the Live CD (Kubuntu 10.10) it boots up in 800x600 (as far as I can tell that's what it is). This would be a problem however it simplely leaves a huge black column on the right side and has a partially duplicated desktop below it.
When I go to display settings it won't let me change to a higher resolution (1024x768 is what the iBook natively runs at).
This is an iBook G3.

Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

Ubuntu :: Unity Doesn't Work - How To Make It Work

Feb 16, 2011

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?

P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Get Dual Booting To Work

Jun 27, 2010

I can get ubuntu to work fine on its own (except for sound, a problem for another day), but I can't get dual booting to work.I'm using this page as a guide:URl...I started out with a clean OSX snow leopard install. I ran bootcamp and shrank my 320G hfs+ file system to 160G. I installed rEFIt, and rebooted twice (you don't see the menu after rebooting once). Then I booted from my 10.04 CD, and deleted the partition created by bootcamp using gparted. When I run the installer and tell it to use the largest continuous space, it makes the / file system in partition #5, and the swap partition in partition #5.

I figured that might cause problems with a MBR partition table, so I partitioned manually, and set up / in sda3 and swap in sda4.When I tried to configure the installation of the bootloader, I had a menu of possible places to install it. I picked /dev/sda3, but then the OK button was grayed out.

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook 3,1 Can't Get Hibernate To Work

Jul 7, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) on my MacBook 3,1 (1GB memory). Most things work perfectly on install, and I've got the iSight working now too!

However, although suspend works fine, hibernate does not. When I try to hibernate, the screen goes blank with the back light on for a few seconds, then the screen goes off completely for about 0.1 of a scond and I hear the optical drive whirr (like it does when booting), and then about 4 or 5 seconds after that it finally powers off.

Then, when I restart, I see the rEFIt menu, then the GRUB menu and it appears to boot like normal and *not* resume from hibernate!

I'm not sure what log I should look in? When I look in /var/log/pm-suspend.log the last line says "performing hibernate", but there's nothing about even attempting to resume.

UPDATE: Forgot to mention, I have a swap partition that is larger than 1GB.

UPDATE 2: Also, after attempting to hibernate, when the system restarts, WiFi has been disabled -- I have to double-tap (right-click) on the WiFi icon and re-enable it. I *think* this is because the hibernate process disables networking, but it then fails to re-enable it because is fails to resume.
