View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install a minimal Ubuntu using mini.iso and have a couple of questions to you, wise heads gives me gnome without all "unnecessary" applications, but it also gives me things like evolution and a couple of others which I don't need/want. Is there a way to install the bare minimum of gnome, but without any of these applications?

Normally I would just re-install it but whenever I try I get this:

So I go through synaptic and it tells me, to install 'swfdec-mozilla' i need to uninstall 'epiphany-extensions' so I do that. and then the terminal gives me the same error as before.. only it say that 'epiphany-extensions' is not going to be installed.

I have a nVidia GeForce GTX 760 Ti Graphics card. I have installed the proprietary driver and disabled the open source one. The problem is when I connect to two monitors via DVI and VGA, the VGA one appears to be 'unknown' and is using incorrect resolution of 640x480. How can I correct its resolution?

What is the minimum CPU or processor required for a Debian stable installation with no GUI, desktop environment, or window manager? I can find specs for all minimum hardware capabilities except for the processor on a system with no desktop GUI. (Debian Stable GNU/Linux Installation Guide 3.4 Meeting Minimum Hardware Requirements) section 2.1.2: CPU, Main Boards, and Video Support and Linux Hardware Compatibility Section 4.1—Intel make it seem like any i386 CPU is good enough.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?
Recently I've read an interview at Distrowatch, where a topic was the compatibility of Slackware and Zenwalk packages. My understanding was that now they should both be used in both systems.
As Slackware doesn't feature a complete GNOME distribution, my curiosity was about the ability of Zenwalk's GNOME packages play a role there. If so, the second question is how intrusive those packages are considering Slackware 13.1.
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

What should I do to fix this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot up Fedora 15 on Virtual Box, I get the message " gnome 3 could not load " and I installed all the packages needed to install Guest Additions, but even when I mounted the file, the ONLY file I could find online that was VMBoxGuestAdditions.iso or something like that, I mounted it, I tried installing, but nope, it gives me an error message that it can't. I have the latest version of VirtualBox and I've been on several forums and looked at many places but I can't fix it. I also have a problem where when I boot it up it says " the system is optimized to support 32 bit but it is currently 64 bit go here and click this to fix it " or something like that. and I can't figure out how to fix it in Virtual Box.

When I go to the update manager I get a message saying "Do you want to perform a safe-upgrade, which does not remove packages or install new ones"? Will my entire system ever eventually get upgraded if I only ever do safe-upgrades? Or is there a time and a place to do non-safe upgrades? I did a non-safe upgrade a few days ago and all it did was mess with a bunch of OpenOffice packages.
Why are only certain packages selected by default when doing a non safe upgrade? Why is it that whenever I do a non-safe upgrade when it's done applying the updates the same packages I just installed are listed as available updates? Also, I used this website to build my sources.list and there apparently is some sort of "fatal error" with one of the repositories I selected. Is there a text file somewhere I can go to see a readout of apt-get bug reports?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.
All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

Thus, after the basic installation I wasn't able to install any packages ( trying to install sudo as root prompted me to insert the media disc - the USB drive I used wasn't detected going in an infinite loop ). Judging by the fact that I don't have a window manager installed.
