Nov 24, 2009I have a 2nd laptop that i want to install F12 on with only KDE4 and no GNOME. How do you control SELinux from KDE4 with no help from GNOME???

Feb 14, 2010When I run it live, I see KDE4. When I install it off the same disk, it installs Gnome. I can't figure out how to install KDE4. I had no luck with apt-get install kde4 (E: Couldn't find package kde4), no luck with aptitude, no luck with Synaptic (The following packages have unresolved dependencis kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4).

Nov 23, 2010I have updated my 11.3x64 recently and after updateI cannot log into any X session.Keyboard is dead but mouse is moving fine.I tried to change kdm to gdm - no result!All I can do now is - select by mouse "Console Session"and log in to common terminal. In terminal session keyboard works.I can't understand What is it?The most interesting:If I run terminal as a root and run startx - kde desktop is started but the same way - without keyboard!Hardware manager (YAST) shows: /dev/input/event0and shows type of keyboard right: AT Keyboard bla-bla-bla. May 9, 2011Installed Gnome 3 on my OpenSuse 11.4 KDE laptop. Got two monitors, the built in monitor and the external. Under KDE the second monitor works fine, shows up as VGA1 and can be configured to work as an extended monitor, etc. Under the new Gnome 3 install the monitor shows up in the settings dialog but the monitor itself always says 'no signal' regardless of the configuration I use.
Hardware:
Lenovo R500 running OpenSuse 11.4 64-bit (originally with KDE4 desktop)
4 Gigs ram, built-in Intel video card.
Again, configuration under KDE works fine but under Gnome 3 I don't get a signal to my second monitor. Haven't located any other threads covering this kind of behavior but Google searches indicate that early versions of Gnome 3 had multi-monitor problems.

May 3, 2011I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

Jul 23, 2015As usual when I want to install sid, I downloaded the "mini.iso" image and proceeded with the installation of sid, without problems. However, when rebooted I noticed SDDM was in place instead of KDM; I readly knew plasma5 was installed.
No messages appeared when I selected "KDE" from the installation process, nor there was a "plasma" name there. So can I install KDE4 desktop instead of plasma 5, using the mini.iso? (I don't like upgrades so telling me to upgrade from stable -> testing -> sid will be useless).

Oct 18, 2010I find it incredible that installing and running reputable software such as Clamav on my system should be a major problem. I have openSUSE 11.3 with kde 4.5.2 desktop and when I try and install clamav using Yast the files are downloaded into old kde3 directory and nothing works.

Aug 14, 2011My KDE4 stopped booting after installing the last (11.7) ATI driver and uninstalling it later (display turned off at all while booting).
I get a login screen, though. When I enter my password and press ENTER, it tries to start but returns to the login screen in a couple of seconds. Here's a snippet from kdm.log:

Feb 23, 2011I installed suse kde 4.4 on a new machine using a cd made with suse studio.
I decided to change the login theme. I went into the login manager, downloaded, selected, and applied a new theme. Restarted. Nothing changed. I still had the same old theme pre-installed via suse studio.
I thought it could be a bug with that particular theme. So I downloaded another theme through the login manager. I selected it, and clicked apply. Restarted.... nothing changed...still the old theme.
I thoroughly searched every option in login manager, thinking that I missed a simple setting. Tried everything I could think of. Still same old theme.
So... I decided to delete the theme pre-installed via suse-studio using login manager. Went to the login screen. It changed! But it wasn't the theme I applied. It was a simple theme-less login screen.
Went back to the login manager. I can change the background pic manually, but I can't install any theme!

Jan 27, 2010I had a my system running KDE4 and my Hard drive crashed. I ahve replaced it with a RAID 1 configuration and reloaded my data and such. However I did not use sid repos so I only have KDE3.5 installed. The big thing I hated about KDE4 is plasma would crash at least 3 times a day and have to be restarted.
Is there a way to install KDE4 without installing plasma?

Aug 23, 2010I am completely fed up trying to do it. I had no problems with 11.0. It refuses to start up during boot like tor. I added tor to the kde start menu and it works just fine after boot. Privoxy refuses to start up during boot. I have to go into SU mode in terminal, then it works. I need to be able to start Privoxy the same way. I tried everything from chown / chmod commands, and it made no difference. I have it set for 777, and my name along with root. I also added the group privoxy to my user ID. I need the computer to disregard that it is a root program.

May 23, 2011I found out that to compile my new kernel - which requires 'qmake' - I need to install the "qt-devel" package. Doing so - according to the package manager - would require uninstalling 81 packages and downgrading almost 50 other packages.
I'm running under Fedora 14 w/ KDE and it's asking to remove things like Amarok and OpenOffice. Am I missing a step or something?

Oct 4, 2010I can't log into my normal user account at bootup; it just bounces back to the login screen.
However, I can log into the user's terminal window from the root account.
I've tried deleting and re-creating the user, but to no avail.
Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?
The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?

Jan 21, 2010Any kde app(dolphin, device notifier...) can't see my internal drive with ntfs and any connected flash drive. I've thought that this is problem with missing dependecies or hal but 'lshal -m' shows messages when J connect flash drive so i don't know where the problem is. I've installed all required and recommended and some optional packages from URL...and it has no effect. Does anybody know what i have to do to make it work.
