I configured my flash drive to be bootable using the gui startup disk creator, and it's working pretty well for me, but every time it boots, it pops up the dialog where you have two options, to use the live usb mode or to install. Is there any way to bypass that prompt and just go straight to the live usb mode?
View 4 RepliesI just made a live USB of 10.04 Lucid using the Startup Disk Creator; but when I boot it gives the "boot:" prompt. Typing anything in like "help" or hitting enter just gives an error that it can't find the kernel image.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently I messed up GRUB boot loader in my laptop installed with Ubuntu which resulted in grub rescue prompt. So I had to boot Ubuntu Live CD to get it fixed. Thought of blogging it, may be useful for some one.
This fix involves two steps. First one is to chroot into Ubuntu installation partition. Second one is to install the grub MBR (Master Boot Record). I am using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 and Live CD also of same.

I had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. It just displays "Booting from Live CD" for few minutes and again displyas the same above error.What should i do now?Its ok if i m not able to recover my data back...i hv sycnd my docs on the internet.

So I build us a scrap PC and installed Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I know that these head banging friends of mine will eventually begin installing a lot of crappy software on it. So I made an Admin account for myself and a restricted one for them.
There might be times when they really need to install something in my absence, so I've decided to make an open Live CD for them to have, so they can have some of their own stuff on it. As you might know, when you boot on this CD you can choose between installing Linux Ubuntu or "trying it" What I want to do is that I want them to use the try- thingy so they wont erase the disk over and over. Of course I can just tell them not to install the actually operative. there's a way to disable the "Install" button in some config file or something Similar.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

I have a Thinkpad x61s which comes with a "Sierra Wireless Mini Card module".
When I start up my computer, I get prompted for a PUK / PIN.
"Unlocking SIM PUK required" (sorry, this is a direct translation of the French, might not be the exact same words in English)
With three fields to fill:
Code PUK
New PIN Code
Reenter new PIN Code.
I don't have a card in my computer, and broadband mobile is not activated in networkmanager.
Does anyone have an idea how I can disable this prompt (I don't intend to put in a SIM card before some time).
I'm running Fedora 12, and I need to disable the firewall from within a shell script, which rules out system-config-firewall. I tried the following:

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.

I have a Live install of ubuntu 10.04 on a USB drive which is really handy. I've changed some things around so it's just how I like it.However, if for example I'm using a computer running windows, and I plug this USB stick in, a popup appears asking me if I want to reformat the drive. I'd much rather not have this appear because an accidental misclick would make me have to do all the work of reinstalling/customizing my USB.
I know how to turn of the popup for a particular machine, but I was wondering if it's possible to deny permissions to format the USB if it's plugged into any computer. Best case scenario would be if you were to plug the usb into any computer and click 'format' you would get a message prompting for a password first (not the one for the computer, one relative to the USB) or something like that.
When I boot from a live USB, it automatically logs in as the live user. I don't want that. I want to log in as a real user, without having to log out of the live user session first.I looked at all the options under system > administration > users&groups. Nothing seems applicable.PS, I did already create the real user and it's working fine. I just have to log out before I can log in as the right user.

When I try to change it to such a short password a prompt appears informing my that the password is too short.
How can I disable this prompt or allow 4 char passwords?
Is there some file I can alter on the Live CD image that will make Ubuntu not automatically eject the drive tray when I shut down from a live CD session?

/etc/rc0.d/S89casper is a link though, so I just edited the file it points to (/etc/init.d/casper) -- seems to be working. I merge a modified "casper" at every boot, next time I build a Remastersys, I'll try to make it permanent.
I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI decided to upgrade my FC installation to the latest version - FC itself offered the upgrade when I turned the machine on, so it appeared that it was nicely packaged to make the upgrade easy.After a long download of packages, the machine rebooted and then started taking me through configuration options (timezone, disks to use for the installation etc) but then it crashed trying to write to disk and now leaves me at a grub prompt whenever I boot.Is there any way to "get at" the installation files and get back into trying to install or do I now need to download an ISO and burn a DVD and start all over again?

After I completed the install I get GRUB prompt and I cannot type anything. Still, I tried so many things, that this post couldn't possibly be shorter then it is.Yesterday I upgraded my Kubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10 using adept. During upgrade I accepted everything that was offered including (one)new configuration file for I don't know what. After reboot I still had grub1, after trying regular boot system froze with error message that usplash process doesn't exist or so; briefly, only recovery mode worked properly. I think I entered clean option accidentally, if not, I haven't done anything special, yet after n-th reboot usplash problem disappeared, but I had another freezing screen, with something like:

PS. Isn't ubuntu suppose to resolve dependencies automatically?
I installed 64 bit Lucid Lynx last week. There were some issues with the grub boot manager and my windows boot manager. However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?
