Ubuntu Installation :: Disable Install Button On Live CD?

Feb 24, 2011

I have a rehearsal studio in which I play some serious brutal pwnage Heavy metal. And of course my fellow metal-heads need a computer so we can mix our music and such. So I build us a scrap PC and installed Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I know that these head banging friends of mine will eventually begin installing a lot of crappy software on it. So I made an Admin account for myself and a restricted one for them.

There might be times when they really need to install something in my absence, so I've decided to make an open Live CD for them to have, so they can have some of their own stuff on it. As you might know, when you boot on this CD you can choose between installing Linux Ubuntu or "trying it" What I want to do is that I want them to use the try- thingy so they wont erase the disk over and over. Of course I can just tell them not to install the actually operative. there's a way to disable the "Install" button in some config file or something Similar.

Ubuntu :: Any Way To Disable Installation / Try Live USB Prompt?

I configured my flash drive to be bootable using the gui startup disk creator, and it's working pretty well for me, but every time it boots, it pops up the dialog where you have two options, to use the live usb mode or to install. Is there any way to bypass that prompt and just go straight to the live usb mode?

Ubuntu :: Disable Only The Left Touchpad Button On Laptop?

Mar 23, 2010

What can I do to disable ONLY the LEFT touchpad button on my laptop? Left Click sticks by itself randomly, this causes problems when using my USB mouse (such as permanent dragging, permanent highlighting, permanent inability to left click anything, the computer is pretty much dead to me unless I try to tab around), it also causes issues with the Tap to Click, and it also causes Ubuntu to not recognize my "Left Handed" mouse button set up after boot for ONLY the touchpad. On the USB mouse, buttons work swapped.

Current solution: Left Handed Button Swap. Touch pad to click. Right touchpad button to right click. Sometimes I use my USB (which does recognize the swap). This is the 3rd install of vanilla Ubuntu (tried it just in case). That's not the issue. This is a Dell Inspiron 6000. I want to just disable the left button on ONLY the touchpad, I don't want this to affect my USB mouse. I want to keep the right button touch pad working. And of course I want my mouse to work. But, actually, my ideal is to sacrifice the left button, use Tap to Click, and use the right mouse button for right clicking. If I can't save the right click, can I disable both buttons?

Ubuntu :: Middle Mouse Button - Disable CAPS LOCK Key?

May 3, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04 (and a new machine) from 8.04 and I can't seem to find a way to have the middle button on my mouse act as a double click like I had it on my old machine. I tried putting the input stanza from my old xorg.conf but then X would not come up. The new tab thing it does in Nautilus is driving me nuts. I see the xorg.conf isn't really used anymore, and there is something about making rules in udev but I can't seem to find the exact wording that I need to make that one rule. I would also like to disable the CAPS LOCK key if anyone knows how to do that without xorg.conf. Maybe someone can point me to a udev tutorial?

Fedora Hardware :: Disable Left Mouse Button?

Jul 8, 2011

I have a question - how to disable the left mouse button in Fedora 14? I do not mean to replace the buttons, only the total exclusion of the left button. I mean that as a result of a error mouse clicks itself, so I swapped it in Preferences on the right and now I want to disable. I would be very grateful if you would tell me how to do it. Maybe should I replace left mouse button with middle mouse button? But how to do it?

Slackware :: Enable NumLock And Then Disable The Button Completely

Jan 8, 2010

I've got 5 users who share a bunch of virtual Windows XP guests via VRDP (VirtualBox RDP access), and I'm having some problems with managing their NumLock state. They all use rdesktop to access the Windows XP machines. This works very well, as long as all of them have NumLock enabled. If one of them disables it by mistake, and then logs into one of the Windows XP machines, NumLock is disabled and some of the programs they use start to act really weird. This is causing us some grief.

So I'd like to be able to enable NumLock on all the computers (they are all running Slackware 12.2) before X, while X runs and while KDE is running. And when NumLock is enabled for the entire system, thenI'd like to remove the ability to disable NumLock altogether. NumLock should always be enabled for these users, no matter what. It would be really nice if Linux/X/KDE/whatever just honored the BIOS setting, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Oh, and I'd really like if the NumLock LED was ON, so everybody are made aware of the fact that they have NumLock turned on.

ps. I've tried remapping the keys on the numeric pad with xmodmap, but that doesn't solve the problem. The actual NumLock state must be set to avoid problems with the troubled Windows programs.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Compaq CQ60 210TU Wireless Enable/Disable Button Not Working?

May 26, 2009

I installed SLED 11 (and openSuse 11.1 as well) but the wireless button(WIFI ON/OFF) which is next to power button of my laptop does not work. It worked in vista (formatted the HD and installed SLED 11 as soon as I bought the notebook ) the wireless driver is Ath5k. The button should actually light up the LED and if the Wireless card is active LED should be BLUE, and ORANGE if the wireless is disabled.. Now its always ORANGE!

I tried to capture the hardware address of the LED but it was a failure! (previously I configured Touchpad ON/OFF switch by myself writing a small script after retrieving values from dmesg)...

So the main issue I have is WIFI On/Off switch (and LED) doesn't work well...

Ubuntu :: Live USB Can Disable 'format' Option?

May 23, 2010

I have a Live install of ubuntu 10.04 on a USB drive which is really handy. I've changed some things around so it's just how I like it.However, if for example I'm using a computer running windows, and I plug this USB stick in, a popup appears asking me if I want to reformat the drive. I'd much rather not have this appear because an accidental misclick would make me have to do all the work of reinstalling/customizing my USB.

I know how to turn of the popup for a particular machine, but I was wondering if it's possible to deny permissions to format the USB if it's plugged into any computer. Best case scenario would be if you were to plug the usb into any computer and click 'format' you would get a message prompting for a password first (not the one for the computer, one relative to the USB) or something like that.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10, Takes 30-45 Minutes For Installation/Live Environment To Load. Install Slow?

Apr 27, 2011

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.

After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install From Live Cd

Mar 20, 2011

I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on a Gateway laptop that is a 3.06 gigahertz Intel pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram. I'm using the live cd but can't get the computer to boot to the cd. My BIOS is set to boot from cd/rom but I'm not getting the typical Ubuntu menu, which includes install, when I boot the computer. I get the Ubuntu loading screen with the graphical loading dots and when that completes I get a blank screen. I've installed Ubuntu on 4 or 5 other PCs and have never had this problem. I'm trying to completely remove XP and replace with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Normally on booting from the Ubuntu cd I get a menu immediately which includes complete installation, but not with this computer.

Installation :: Live Disks Won't Install Drivers Or Install?

Feb 19, 2009

So far I've tried gOS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and SuZE. The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install From Windows Or Other Live Cd

Apr 29, 2011

I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 and wish to do a clean installation since it has become very cluttered with programs (I had the ooh, that looks like a cool free program I can download and then never use it again syndrome for a while). Since I've been doing some sound stuff with my computer, I decided to try Ubuntu Studio. Anyway, I am at college and do not have any cds available to be able to burn the image on. Is there a way to install Ubuntu onto my current partition (yes, I want to back everything up and erase what is on this partition) without burning the .iso to a disk. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 live disk and a Windows 7 partition on my hard drive. Is this possible with what I have and can anyone give me instructions or link me to something showing how? (I googled for a bit, but must have been missing the magic keywords if it's out there.)
