Ubuntu Security :: How To Disable Login Prompt

Feb 17, 2011

How do I disable showing Usernames? I want to be prompted for BOTH un and pw. If it is necessary I could just change it so that it boots into a fullscreen terminal so that you would have to input "startx" and then username and password. Or I could just change it through gui or 3rd party software.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - How To Disable Login Keyring Prompt

Apr 2, 2010

Whenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

Ubuntu :: Login Prompt Sound On Startup - Impossible To Disable With Usual Methods

Dec 17, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.

(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)

Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.

There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:

1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close

2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close

3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close

It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.

I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.

Ubuntu Security :: Cannot Disable Auto Login?

I have tried everything to disable automatic login from the login screen (gdm). I've changed my password, I've changed the settings in System -> Admin ->Login Screen, and I've edited /etc/gdm/custom.conf (gdm.conf doesn't exist, but I created it just in case!).No auto login is set up, but I can't get it to ask for my password. This is affecting my ability to switch sessions, as I can't switch sessions without clicking on my name in gdm, and because it's set to auto login,

Security :: Disable First Level Login Via Putty

Sep 4, 2010

Is there anyway I can disable an account from being logged in via Putty, but permits someone else to "su" into the account? For example, an application is being run as "app_account". Because there will be multiple people administering this application and the password is shared for this "app_account", I want to disable 1st level login for it. I want to make it such that only the permitted people can "su - app_account", once they have logged into their personal account. How can I do this? If I set app_account's shell to /sbin/nologin, the users are also not allowed to do "su - app_account".

Fedora :: Can't Login Into The Root Account: It Returns Me Immediately To The Login Prompt?

Jan 27, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared). Why is this happening? Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Ubuntu Networking :: Disable Prompt For PUK / PIN For Broadband Wireless At Startup?

Jan 13, 2011

I've looked quite a bit, but didn't find an answer.

I have a Thinkpad x61s which comes with a "Sierra Wireless Mini Card module".

When I start up my computer, I get prompted for a PUK / PIN.

"Unlocking SIM PUK required" (sorry, this is a direct translation of the French, might not be the exact same words in English)
With three fields to fill:
Code PUK
New PIN Code
Reenter new PIN Code.

I don't have a card in my computer, and broadband mobile is not activated in networkmanager.

Does anyone have an idea how I can disable this prompt (I don't intend to put in a SIM card before some time).

Ubuntu :: No UI Login Prompt At Startup ?

Jun 25, 2010

I don't get a UI login prompt at startup and it makes a sound. I'm using 10.04, though this did happen to me in 9.0x as well. When I press ctrl-alt-F1, I login and sudo gdm stop and do sudo startx this seems to put me at root and there is an error with the applets and the panel does not load. "Killall gnome-panel" does not fix it.

If I simply do startx (w/o going to root), it goes to a black screen and if I press ctrl-alt-F1 it repeats "No protocol specified" until I get the error message xinit: Resource file temporary unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to Xserver.

Ubuntu :: Login Prompt - Virtual Terminals Not Working?

Feb 6, 2010

Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.

Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.6
init: bootchart main process (462) terminated with status 2
init: bootchart post-stop process (474) terminated with status 127
/dev/sda2: clean, (integer)/(integer) files, (integer)/(integer) blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (870) terminated with status 4

What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.

This should be somewhere in the interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
