Ubuntu Installation :: Not Getting New Login Prompt?
Apr 30, 2011I am not getting the new login prompt that allows you to select classic. I still get the same login prompt i had on 10.10. How do i correct that?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Just Boots To Login Prompt?
May 24, 2010I installed 64 bit Lucid Lynx last week. There were some issues with the grub boot manager and my windows boot manager. However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?

May 5, 2011I just installed a test Natty VirtualBox server from the "mini" iso. After doing that the normal boot always ends with a blank screen and cannot login. The recovery boot option does work normally. After much digging around and various tests I found that the "splash quiet" boot options cause this issue.
I removed them from the /etc/defaults/grub file and ran update-grub. Next boot the login screen came up after as normal. It seems when the splash flashes that purple screen with the Ubuntu 11.04 message it is breaking something and does not get back out of some graphics mode.
This is in a VirtualBox window and I noticed that vesa framebuffers seem to be used by default in grub now. I never had this issue in previous releases and I'm just wondering if others have seen this and if there is a better fix than disabling splash. I don't mind having it disabled as this is a server install anyway and I'm fine with seeing debug messages during boot. If other have seen this then perhaps it needs to be logged as a bug?

Jan 27, 2010I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Jun 25, 2010I don't get a UI login prompt at startup and it makes a sound. I'm using 10.04, though this did happen to me in 9.0x as well. When I press ctrl-alt-F1, I login and sudo gdm stop and do sudo startx this seems to put me at root and there is an error with the applets and the panel does not load. "Killall gnome-panel" does not fix it.
If I simply do startx (w/o going to root), it goes to a black screen and if I press ctrl-alt-F1 it repeats "No protocol specified" until I get the error message xinit: Resource file temporary unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to Xserver.
Ubuntu :: Possible To Change Login Prompt?
Dec 19, 2010I managed to change the background by copying over a new image file to some directory. However, there is still the big boring login window. Is there any way to change that? I'd like something darker, and smaller. I copied over the image file to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png My image file was actually a jpeg file, but copying it over to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png posed no problems.

Feb 26, 2010I had received ununtu HH CD, which I loaded few times in few machine without problem (CD is ok). But in a perticular machine ubuntu HH, makes the screen garbled during installation and after installation at login prompt, but screen is just OK before the login prompt. This is happening in one machine and when i tried to load ubuntu 9 and fedora core in this machine, all goes fine (installation and use) means machine is reasonably ok. As I load edubuntu on HH, hence this ubuntu loading is important for me.

Apr 2, 2010Whenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

Feb 1, 2010After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.
Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?
My system is an old Amilo Pro laptop with a VIA 800 compatible chip-set.
Ubuntu :: Login Prompt - Virtual Terminals Not Working?
Feb 6, 2010Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.

What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.

Jun 30, 2010I can boot up ubuntu but it's just showing the default background, the login prompt won't come up. What do I do? Startx doesn't work in the terminal (ctrl-alt F1), it gives an error. I can log in as root (recovery mode) and startx works and the desktop comes up though.

Nov 20, 2010I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my 32gb flash drive. Just one large partition for the OS and about a gig for swap. Worked fine. Booted to USB on two computers and a laptop at home. Fine. Figured I'd try it on a work pc for the sake of testing a random computer. Well I stick the drive in, boot up, select usb from the boot menu and bam Ubuntu starts loading. I look away, it's cool ubuntu's loading. Well I turn back and it's a black screen. It's "<username>@whatever login:" or something close.
I use the username and password I created during installation and what I used to login to the computer like fifty million times while booted into Ubuntu. Well, invalid login. The first time I installed this OS on this drive I updated it through the update manager and rebooted. Next thing I know I type in my username and password, hit enter, and bam black screen, some stuff, then im asked to login again. Now after this next iteration I am faced with yet another faulty login screen. What is up with this OS?

Apr 10, 2011After updating my system to kernel 2.6.35-28 via the update manager my system now boots to a sever tty terminal and asks to log in. Once I log in and type start x at the prompt the system will load the sign in screen and all is well. I downloaded a boot info script from here

Nov 19, 2010We've set up a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server and can log into it remotely just fine (with root and other users), but if I try to log in locally with a keyboard and monitor connected to the machine, I keep being returned to the login prompt. If a login is incorrect, I get an error message, but if it is correct then the screen just blanks and shows the login prompt again.While booting the only error message that comes up has to do with SNMPD, so I don't think it's related.
I read this post on the forum which seemed like a similar problem but it didn't help (I wasn't getting the "Module is unknown" message he was). I also read another post somewhere that said he was having the problem because the server was trying to use AD to authenticate, but I checked that and it's not the case with our server.From what I'm told (I didn't set up the server myself) it used to work fine, but then "something" happened one day that made it do this.

I have the profile pic set in the "About Me" configuration page, and this will show up in my toolbar in the upper right hand corner, but when I log out and go to select my login name from the list of users within the login prompt, I don't see my pic, just the generic user picture.
Is there a way to set this? I have multiple users using this machine. It would be nice if they can just visually scan for their picture to login with.
