CentOS 5 Networking :: Internet Access Slow In CentOS 5.3?

Sep 9, 2009

I have an MSI K9A2 Platinum mobo, which has a 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet Realtek 8111B built-in, a D-Link DIR-655 Router and a DSL modem. Compared to Windows Visya and other Linux distros ( Fedora 11, Suse 11.1, Mandriva 2009.1 ) access to the internet is much slower. It seems there is a noticeable delay when running CentOS 5.3. before internet access kicks in each time I am surfing the web or updating my system.

Is there any way I can speed things up, or determine why CentOS 5.3 seems much slower ?

Networking :: CentOS 5.5 - No Access To Internet

Oct 17, 2010

I have CentOS5.5, it has full access to internet until I did something to it I couldn't figure out. This is not a cable issue since I could ping and ssh to other machines within my lan. Apache is also running fine, which is probably irrelevant. When I type traceroute cnn, it simply hangs, later saying [URL]:
Temporary failure in name resolution
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg '[URL]' on position 1 (argc 1)
This is a desktop version of CentOS5.5, when i do Administration - Network, it says eth0 is active and Primary and Secondary DNS are set correctly to my comcast DNS server at 68.94.15x.1

CentOS 5 :: Can't Seem To Access The Internet From 5.4 Server

May 20, 2011

I am using a CentOS 5.4 server for Snort (it's actually using the easyIDS config). I'm trying to modify some things, and I've noticed that I can't seem to download any files. WGET, FTP, etc... all just time out. It's not a network firewall issue, as I've been monitoring the logs and see no blocked traffic, and other machines on the subnet can get outside with no problems. I checked the Cent firewall using the setup command, and it says it is disabled as well. I'm very new to linux, so I'm wondering how I can troubleshoot this? The wget and ftp errors just say the connection timed out, but I'm not sure why.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Can't Ping Or Otherwise Access Internet

Mar 14, 2009

I just downloaded and installed the latest Cent OS 5. I disabled SE linux, turned off the firewall, and selected the Server package options when installing. I plan on using this as a router/firewall between my internal network and the internet, as well as web server, etc. The first thing I did was to configure the two NICs, internal one with 192.168.7.1 address and the other with an address from my ISP (I have a static address, but I also tried to let the DSL router assign an address via DHCP). Everything looked fine, I checked /etc/resolv.conf and my routes. I was able to ping the DSL router from the server, but I was not able to do a ping or lookup on anything outside my network. I tried host, dig, nslookup, etc, no luck. Obviously then, I was not able to browse the net with firefox.

CentOS 5 Server :: Allow Apache To Access The Internet?

Apr 21, 2009

We have Apache installed on CentOS 5.3 in our laboratory. Indeed the server is running fine for almost two years since it is actually the first CentOS 5 that was released just regularly updated. Now, most of our applications are custom made PHP applications and until now we somehow managed to avoid using PHP to fetch files that are on the internet itself. But now we are desperate because we need to allow PHP to fetch files through Apache but it seems as if Apache is not allowed to make a connection to the outer world. Additionally we use a proxy server to connect to the outer world so right at the beginning http_proxy is used to set that environmental variable. And for the root user it all works fine after that but it seems as if the apache user is not allowed to access the internet. Just to make a remark our web server can be accessed from the outer world so its a one way street for now.

I can also use ssh (putty) and nx client from any computer on the local network (wired and wireless) to access the centos server. On the wireless router I've configured a port forwarding to the wireless network interface on the centos server. I can access the centos server from the outside (internet) through this port forwarding both through http and ssh or nx client.MY problem is that I can't access the centos server from the internet through the wired network interface. Any attempt to view a web page or login with ssh or the nx client will timeout.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Access Internet From Windows XP Clients / Enable This?

Jan 3, 2011

I am stepping into Linux world ...and I have chosen CentOS.
I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a dedicated IBM server successfully. My server has two network cards. I have configured eth0 for lease line internet connection with a live IP (113.xxx.xxx.xxx) and eth1 for local LAN with a static IP (192.168.0.1).

Now,
1. DHCP is working fine and I can access the server from my Windows XP clients.
2. I can access the server with SSH client PuTTY from home ( with the live IP ) and from the local LAN (with static IP 192.168.0.1)
3. I can access my shared server directory 'public' from my XP clients
4. Internet is working on sever and I have updated the server with yum update.

But, I cannot access internet from my XP clients machines.

I read "The Definitive Guide to CentOS" and tweaked the config files in different ways but it did not help. now after two sleepless nights I am here as my last hope.

I admit, I am not aware of every linux terms and commands, but I am getting into it. code...

CentOS 5 Networking :: Wifi Client To Access Internet Via Laptop?

Jul 27, 2010

I have a Centos5.4 64bit laptop, having an eth0 and a wlan0. I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?

That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.

Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?

General :: PPPOE Server Access Internet Clients Fail To Access Internet

Aug 26, 2010

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.

On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

Ubuntu :: Adding Indicators To Unity's Top/Application Panel?

May 1, 2011

I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.

After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I did restart, though. For both the weather and CPU frequency indicators, the terminal said:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/fr.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_sour ce_Sources Hash Sum mismatchI don't know how to get around this

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To The Internet As Per Normal And Use Any Internet Application?

Feb 1, 2010

On this box I have Two seperate Ubuntu installations. Recently in both I seem to be having the same problem. I initially can connect to the internet as per normal and use any internet application. But after a period of time, sometimes just minutes, sometimes hours, even though the icon says connected, I cant update pages or send emails etc because there is no actual connection. My Physical connection is good I know - My Ubuntu laptop and Windows gamming PC connect fine during this period. So

Does this suggest an intermittent hardware fault or is there some thing in Ubuntu I can check to make sure that it is setup correctly and nothing has been corrupted? I am a lay PC person - I dont really want to be command prompting - Plug & Play and Point & Click is my limit.

OpenSUSE :: Adding Repositories Without Internet?

Jul 20, 2011

I have a problem with my wireless internet, my chipset went into the kernel in 2.6.38 and my kernel is version 2.6.37. I know what I have to do, which is add the repository from Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_11.4 there. Then I have to go into Yast and get the compat-wireless-kmp-desktop-2.6.38.2_k2.6.37.1_1.2-2.1.i586.rpm I do believe. From then, I can do the 'sudo/sbin/modprobe -v rtl8192ce' command my wireless should be availabe.

However, with no internet connection, I'm not sure how to add a repository. I'm a bit of a noob to Linux but I'm just unsure of a way. I tried just going in and downloading the compat-wireless-kmp-desktop-2.6.38.2_k2.6.37.1_1.2-2.1.i586.rpm file and putting it on my external harddrive and trying to install it that way. But it said something about there was no dependency so it couldn't install the file.

Am I missing something here or is there another way I can do this without the use of internet in OpenSuse?

Btw, before anyone says use wireless, it's not possible at the moment, but I'll make it happen if it's a last resort.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 Amd64 - Having Internet Access But Cannot Access Repos - IPV6?

I installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message

- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)

This was followed by a message box containing

- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents

Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)
