Ubuntu Installation :: How To Boot Casper Drive To RAM

Feb 21, 2011

I've made myself a multiboot usb drive and looking to add ubuntu to it. I've created a live system and its respective casper drive, made the changes I want to it and now looking to make the whole system boot to ram including the casper drive so I can use the same usb drive in multiple machines instead of having to have multiple usb pens.

I've added the toram option in the txt.cfg file but only the operating system (filesystem.squashfs) goes into ram so when I take the usb out, the files on the casper drive are lost.

Could you tell me either how to boot the casper drive to ram or how to combine or merge the filesystem.squash and the casper-rw drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create Larger Then 4GB Casper File?

Nov 23, 2010

I have recently been experimenting with installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB/Flash drive, and have finally stumbled on the "Universal USB Installer", using a so-called "Casper" file for persistence. Now I wanted to make the Casper file bigger, and found this article:I was reading it, and got confused at this part:"This tutorial assumes that you have already created a bootable USB Flash Drive that contains Ubuntu or an Ubuntu based Live Distro like Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Crunchbang, etc. You should delete any existing casper-rw file from the drive to free up all available space before proceeding.

1. Restart your Computer, booting from an Ubuntu Live CD"Do they mean that you have to make 1 flash drive that was created with the Universal USB Installer, and has a Casper file on it, AND you have a Live CD from which you operate? If so, could I use one flash drive that acts like a Live CD (without the Casper file), and create another flash drive that DOES have the Casper file, and then boot from the one without, and follow the instructions? (Sorry for the complex sentence, didn't know how other to put it...)

Therefore I edited the script '/usr/share/initramfstools/ scripts/ casper'. I used the 'dirty hacks'in the ubuntuforums.org/boottoram howto but I suited them for my needs. Now the Systems stops after the kernel and doesn't find a root system.

The sqfs-image without the modification of the 'casper'-script still boots but doesn't load into ram completely.

General :: Distro That Is USB Install Friendly Without A Loopback/casper ?

Feb 1, 2010

Besides Puppy or DSL, is there a full "regular" Linux distro that is friendly to be installed on a USB flash drive that won't wear it out? I want to be able to upgrade it, not just keep minor persistent changes like the methods outlined in pendrivelinux.com. The loopback file would fill out too much if I actually did a apt-get update, so I want something that installs natively on a USB flash drive with EXT3/EXT4, etc.

However, is there a distro that sends the log to a tmp ram drive, for instance? Something made *not* to wear out a USB drive too fast? I want a truly portable Linux on a UFD, not a semi-attempt that uses casper.

I have had a dual boot on my system since first trying Ubuntu a few months ago.I had a few problems when i upgraded to 11.04 (mainly due to the new desktop Unity), but after some great help here, we had the old desktop running again.I have Windows running on my spare Computer in case i should need it for any reason, though can not think of one lol Now i am used to Ubuntu (from the using side, get lost in terminal etc so here i come if i need help) i decided i would totally commit my main computer to Ubuntu.I downloaded the latest iso from the Ubuntu site, and burnt it to CD, inserted in my main computer & rebooted. What could be causing this and how do I stop it. This happens with not only my F2 key, but all the F functions. Also does anyone know how to reenable wireless after disabling it in Ubuntu. Pressing the enable/disable button does nothing after disabling and would require a boot to windows to reenable it.

Ubuntu :: Mkinitramfs - Can't Find Functions For Scripts

Dec 23, 2010

Environment: Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop

Description: I am trying to create a custom pxe booted environment to automate the repair of systems.

I've successfully created a custom initramfs and booted it. So far everything is working well. I had manually added in modules, I had copied over binary tools and they do work. The system boots fine and stops at the prompt below where I can manually perform all the tasks I need: (initramfs)

Problem:

1) I tried adding in custom scripts to automate the above process in "init-bottom" and "local-bottom" but they all fail saying that "panic", "log_begin_msg", "log_end_msg" don't exist. They are in the "functions" file though.

2) It's entirely possible this is related to the root mount. I don't want to mount a disk as a root device. In fact I am just happy with the (initramfs) prompt. So far I've just removed the "set root" option from grub and it just complains but continues anyways. This could be why it can't find the functions.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04: Wireless Functions But Ethernet Doesn't

Dec 14, 2010

My wireless works flawlessly (aside from my generally crappy signal ahaha), but when I decided to do a minimal Ubuntu live install on my netbook [Asus Eee 1005PE] (I tried both 10.04 and 10.10 with the same results), it wouldn't pick up my ethernet.

I decided just to load up my existing OS (Ubuntu 10.04 32-Bit) and got the same thing.

The wireless, as stated before, works without a problem, and it's weird, because the wireless manager says that knows the ethernet connection is there, but it won't connect to it...

[Edit: I did play around with different combinations in the BIOS (ie: lan enabled, wlan disabled, ect...)

Ubuntu :: Any Options Within Banshee To Remove All But The Most Basic Functions?

Jul 20, 2011

1. I was wondering if there were certain terms for the various areas on the desktop. I'm using the classic layout in Ubuntu (I read many say they liked Gnome better than Unity, and classic is closer to Gnome). Are there terms to describe the following areas in Ubuntu?:A. The first area has Applications, Places, and System menus. This seems most comparable to the Windows start menu.B. The panel at the bottom of the desktop shows which applications or files are running. It looks like the task bar.C. There's an area of one panel that allows you to shutdown, restart, etc. It also has networking options, sound options, time settings, and other things. This makes me think of the system tray. I think this area may also have a notification area, but I haven't noticed any notifications.

2. Are there any options within Banshee to remove all but the most basic functions? Media Player in Windows had an option to go into some compact or skin mode where it took up very little space. I noticed some sort of Banshee player within the sound controls in the (system tray). Something similar to this would be ideal. I'd like to be able to just select a bunch of songs in a folder and play them all in this condensed version of the audio player.3. This has to do with the auto hide feature of the panels when they are located on the left and right side of the desktop. It seems as though the panels will only reappear when my cursor hits the very top of the screen on the corresponding side. So if a panel was set to auto hide on the left side of the desktop, it would only reappear when the cursor was in the top-left-most part of the screen. Is there a way to make it appear when my cursor touches any part of the left edge?4. I noticed that I was able to access some files and folders on my Windows partition while in Ubuntu.

A. Can modifying files on the Windows partition have some unwanted consequences?B. If I made another Linux-based partition, would my current Ubuntu partition be able to access files in the new partition in the same way? Would this require root privileges for every action?5. I've read that modifying the Windows partition from Ubuntu with something like Gparted could have negative effects on Windows' ability to boot properly. Are there similar dangers when modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows? My HDD is currently partitioned like: Win7 400GB, Ubuntu 100GB.I'm thinking about setting it up like: Win7 350GB, Ubuntu 100GB, unallocated 50GB.

If modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows can have negative effects, how should I go about setting this up?6. Is there a way to set the size the icons on the desktop without having to resize each one individually.7. How difficult is it to set up a customized theme? I haven't found a theme for the controls that I've liked yet. I've seen a couple that were pretty decent, but usually one thing would ruin the theme for me. This made me wonder about making my own.8. I believe the media player in use right now is Totem. Like with Banshee, is there a way to have most of the controls of this application hidden or made less noticeable? I tend to favor a minimalist approach when customizing things, so being able to reduce the number of things showing or being able to hide them when I want is always a plus. Maybe someone could suggest an alternate media player that works well to accomplish this. If another player could be paused when the video is clicked, that'd be a small plus.

9. When setting the folder permissions (read, write, execute), do these overwrite the individual file permissions within the folder? I believe I read that this applies to other folders within the folder. Or do the folder and file permissions not interact with one-another?10. My understanding of folder permissions is that none will work without the execute permission being enabled. Why is this? I read of the followingconfigurations(r:read, w:write, x:execute): r-x for read only, rwx for read and write, --- to deny access. The tutorial I read this from advised against otherconfigurations. What would happen if you allowed read and write permissions but disabled execute permissions for folders? What happens if only execute permissions are granted?11. I have the display set to dim when idle. What does it mean to be "idle"? The amount of time it takes for the screen to dim seems vary randomly.

12. This chunk of questions relates to Linux and its uses with various companies.A. Why do companies that use Linux machines heavily use these Linux machines? Is it just an open source, money-saving matter?B. For a person whose responsibilities are to maintain and run things on these machines, what might his or her responsibilities include?C. What sort of skills should this person have? What other technologies are often used in conjunction with Linux machines to accomplish some of the companies' goals?D. I'd imagine that with servers or whatever other things are running on these machines, the companies wouldn't want excess software or system files to be taking up resources. This leads me to think that thesemachines would have to be handled without GUIs and such. Would one be able to simulate the limitations of these machines in Ubuntu? Is it as simple as limiting one's self to the terminal to do everything? Are there things Linux can do on its own that Ubuntu cannot do?
