Ubuntu :: Mkinitramfs - Can't Find Functions For Scripts
Dec 23, 2010
Environment: Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop
Description: I am trying to create a custom pxe booted environment to automate the repair of systems.
I've successfully created a custom initramfs and booted it. So far everything is working well. I had manually added in modules, I had copied over binary tools and they do work. The system boots fine and stops at the prompt below where I can manually perform all the tasks I need: (initramfs)
Problem:
1) I tried adding in custom scripts to automate the above process in "init-bottom" and "local-bottom" but they all fail saying that "panic", "log_begin_msg", "log_end_msg" don't exist. They are in the "functions" file though.
2) It's entirely possible this is related to the root mount. I don't want to mount a disk as a root device. In fact I am just happy with the (initramfs) prompt. So far I've just removed the "set root" option from grub and it just complains but continues anyways. This could be why it can't find the functions.

None of my daemon scripts work now, and the startup process displayed errors. Should I reinstall the OS and start from scratch, or is there a way to recover these files? Is there a way to rebuild the files I deleted?

I know why this happened, but I need to know what problems it's going to cause and how I can re-install / fix the problem. I have my /tmp folder mounted as -noexec ... so when I did a recent update to my 10.04.1 LTS server installation, I got the following errors:

Press return to continue.
What should I do now? (besides, obviously, removing the -noexec flag from /tmp so this doesn't happen again!)

I have a Dell Inspiron Duo. Running Ubuntu 10.10 On my laptop, the enable/disable wireless and my F2 key share the same space and I need to press the Fn key to use F2 (I know supposed to go other way). But sometimes, they trade places. Where I that If I press the Fn key, it would enable/disable the wireless connections instead of doing F2.
What could be causing this and how do I stop it. This happens with not only my F2 key, but all the F functions. Also does anyone know how to reenable wireless after disabling it in Ubuntu. Pressing the enable/disable button does nothing after disabling and would require a boot to windows to reenable it.

I have an Msi Wind u100+. Between the right hand Alt Gr and CTRL keys there is a key that looks like a menu. It seems to have the same function as a right mouse click. I want to know how to change this specific keys' function, such as use it to launch a terminal or another Super key. Ive tried Keyboard Shortcuts but its main right click function prevails. Also, searchng the forums and google only brings up how to change the entire keyboard layout to DVORAK or something and that's not what I want to do.

i have lost left and right click functions in mouse and touchpad. This only happens when in a window - as in running App. when on top or bottom bar L&R click function normally and on cairo doc too. but inside any APP window left click turns into a hand and grabs it and moves the whole window around. Right click pops up the menu to close it , move workstation Right or Left etcetc So it is like the whole window is now like the title bar area
i have to hold Shift+control down to have normal mouse/touchpad function
I was playing with the Sugar App and its an emulator an educational toy for kids
it tells you to hold shift+control down so you can move the mouse out of the sugar window
and to hold Shift+control+any key for keyboard function
god knows what keys i hit
get my mouse / touchpad functions back
i have already removed all the SUGAR apps via synaptic

When I am running the OpenSSL FIPS Version 1.2 on Ubuntu, it is giving an "Illegal instruction" error on certain crytographic functions esp RSA Keys. I am running on Amazon eC2 Using Ubuntu Jaunty. It turns out that the illegal instruction was Ubuntu, the underlying PPC processor on eC2 must not have Floating Point Units. I need to know how to turn on CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION for fpu emulation in Ubuntu. I am sure there is a config file somehwere to change this, but I have no idea where it is. Will this require a re-compile the kernel?

This is about the 3rd or 4th year that I have tried to fill in my Federal tax return on the IRS website using Ubuntu/Firefox/pdf program(s). Still to this day the PDF functions found available (or should I say unavailable) (whether using either EVINCE or ACROREAD) for this O/S will not properly function in allowing you to CONSISTENTLY complete a PDF IRS form on their website, print and then save that completed IRS form to the hard drive of your computer. This is sort of ridiculous! Yes, I have report this as a bug NUMEROUS times and it is still not fixed.

I'm trying to play Minecraft on my netbook like I did before with Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, but on 10.04 i opted at the log in to use the GNOME interface, so to run Minecraft i just right clicked it and chose the option to run with SUN Java(insert version numbers here) and it worked just fineBUT with the new Unity interface I can't get it to work! I right click and nothing happens. How do I run with Java on Unity? It worked fine when i logged out and switched to the GNOME interface, so I know the game works. I just don't know how to do it in Unity.

My wireless works flawlessly (aside from my generally crappy signal ahaha), but when I decided to do a minimal Ubuntu live install on my netbook [Asus Eee 1005PE] (I tried both 10.04 and 10.10 with the same results), it wouldn't pick up my ethernet.
I decided just to load up my existing OS (Ubuntu 10.04 32-Bit) and got the same thing.
The wireless, as stated before, works without a problem, and it's weird, because the wireless manager says that knows the ethernet connection is there, but it won't connect to it...
[Edit: I did play around with different combinations in the BIOS (ie: lan enabled, wlan disabled, ect...)

I think I may have finally killed my computer. My graphics card broke down a month ago, it was an XFX Nvidia 8600 GT. I swapped it out with an old 7600 GS, and it worked fine. XFX sent me an HD 4650 as a replacement, which I installed today. I powered my PC back on and it seemed to run fine but I had no picture, and the mouse didn't light up like it normally does. I put the 7600 GS back in and tried again. Nothing. I'm worried that the motherboard is malfunctioning or something. Does anyone have a clue what happened here?

1. I was wondering if there were certain terms for the various areas on the desktop. I'm using the classic layout in Ubuntu (I read many say they liked Gnome better than Unity, and classic is closer to Gnome). Are there terms to describe the following areas in Ubuntu?:A. The first area has Applications, Places, and System menus. This seems most comparable to the Windows start menu.B. The panel at the bottom of the desktop shows which applications or files are running. It looks like the task bar.C. There's an area of one panel that allows you to shutdown, restart, etc. It also has networking options, sound options, time settings, and other things. This makes me think of the system tray. I think this area may also have a notification area, but I haven't noticed any notifications.
2. Are there any options within Banshee to remove all but the most basic functions? Media Player in Windows had an option to go into some compact or skin mode where it took up very little space. I noticed some sort of Banshee player within the sound controls in the (system tray). Something similar to this would be ideal. I'd like to be able to just select a bunch of songs in a folder and play them all in this condensed version of the audio player.3. This has to do with the auto hide feature of the panels when they are located on the left and right side of the desktop. It seems as though the panels will only reappear when my cursor hits the very top of the screen on the corresponding side. So if a panel was set to auto hide on the left side of the desktop, it would only reappear when the cursor was in the top-left-most part of the screen. Is there a way to make it appear when my cursor touches any part of the left edge?4. I noticed that I was able to access some files and folders on my Windows partition while in Ubuntu.
A. Can modifying files on the Windows partition have some unwanted consequences?B. If I made another Linux-based partition, would my current Ubuntu partition be able to access files in the new partition in the same way? Would this require root privileges for every action?5. I've read that modifying the Windows partition from Ubuntu with something like Gparted could have negative effects on Windows' ability to boot properly. Are there similar dangers when modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows? My HDD is currently partitioned like: Win7 400GB, Ubuntu 100GB.I'm thinking about setting it up like: Win7 350GB, Ubuntu 100GB, unallocated 50GB.
If modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows can have negative effects, how should I go about setting this up?6. Is there a way to set the size the icons on the desktop without having to resize each one individually.7. How difficult is it to set up a customized theme? I haven't found a theme for the controls that I've liked yet. I've seen a couple that were pretty decent, but usually one thing would ruin the theme for me. This made me wonder about making my own.8. I believe the media player in use right now is Totem. Like with Banshee, is there a way to have most of the controls of this application hidden or made less noticeable? I tend to favor a minimalist approach when customizing things, so being able to reduce the number of things showing or being able to hide them when I want is always a plus. Maybe someone could suggest an alternate media player that works well to accomplish this. If another player could be paused when the video is clicked, that'd be a small plus.
9. When setting the folder permissions (read, write, execute), do these overwrite the individual file permissions within the folder? I believe I read that this applies to other folders within the folder. Or do the folder and file permissions not interact with one-another?10. My understanding of folder permissions is that none will work without the execute permission being enabled. Why is this? I read of the followingconfigurations(r:read, w:write, x:execute): r-x for read only, rwx for read and write, --- to deny access. The tutorial I read this from advised against otherconfigurations. What would happen if you allowed read and write permissions but disabled execute permissions for folders? What happens if only execute permissions are granted?11. I have the display set to dim when idle. What does it mean to be "idle"? The amount of time it takes for the screen to dim seems vary randomly.
12. This chunk of questions relates to Linux and its uses with various companies.A. Why do companies that use Linux machines heavily use these Linux machines? Is it just an open source, money-saving matter?B. For a person whose responsibilities are to maintain and run things on these machines, what might his or her responsibilities include?C. What sort of skills should this person have? What other technologies are often used in conjunction with Linux machines to accomplish some of the companies' goals?D. I'd imagine that with servers or whatever other things are running on these machines, the companies wouldn't want excess software or system files to be taking up resources. This leads me to think that thesemachines would have to be handled without GUIs and such. Would one be able to simulate the limitations of these machines in Ubuntu? Is it as simple as limiting one's self to the terminal to do everything? Are there things Linux can do on its own that Ubuntu cannot do?

I'm talking specifically about three functions that I'm missing from Windows world and could not find them in any terminal program in Linux.
1. When you select text in putty window the text is being automatically copied to clipboard - very useful.
2. When I move the cursor to another putty window and right click inside it - the text is being automatically paste inside this window.
3.When I click on a putty window with session running I can say: "duplicate session" - so great.
Why o why can't I get those in any Linux terminal ?I could get this wit CrossOver but surprisingly the Windows version of putty does not work under linux as it supposed to?

Botched upgrade to 11.04, but learned enough about Unity that I don't want to go there. (also installer to put second new 11.04 wants to erase everything on main drive). Can reach 10.10 -boot from prior Linux - but mouse and internet are gone. Everything else seems to work and I can get to System and terminal with keyboard shortcuts, but need to reinstall mouse (Logitech M110) and internet. Can't find an Xorg.conf file or a /dev/input/event3.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04. Most of my Administration functions have stopped working. If I click on Hardware Drivers, Hardware Testing, Log In Window, Software Sources, Synaptic Package Manager, and Windows Wireless Drivers my pointer turns into the timer wheel, so I know it is working, but then it just disappears and nothing happens. When I click on Update Manager my computer freezes. If I try to update through the red Updates Available arrow at the top of my screen my computer freezes. I can update through terminal but the red arrow never goes away. I also have 17 updates that won't update. I have tried them one at a time through terminal but they just freeze the computer. The only way to unfreeze it is to shut the computer down.

I just bought an Apple (intl.) keyboard because of its stylish look and weight but I can't figure out how to map keys to get certain functions that I'm used to working.
Particularly Alt+Ctl+F1~6 when wanting to switch to regular terminal and print screen.
Is there a tutorial out there that explains how to map keys?

Where are the definitions for C library functions located? It was just recently that I realized that header files don't actually define any functions, they merely include their prototypes.
For instance, stdio.h includes the following line:
Code:
This just means that the definition of printf() is located in another file. What file? Is there some kind of default shared object file that is automatically included during compilation?
