Ubuntu :: Installed New Graphics Card PC No Longer Functions

I think I may have finally killed my computer. My graphics card broke down a month ago, it was an XFX Nvidia 8600 GT. I swapped it out with an old 7600 GS, and it worked fine. XFX sent me an HD 4650 as a replacement, which I installed today. I powered my PC back on and it seemed to run fine but I had no picture, and the mouse didn't light up like it normally does. I put the 7600 GS back in and tried again. Nothing. I'm worried that the motherboard is malfunctioning or something. Does anyone have a clue what happened here?

for some reason my graphics card is no longer detected by Ubuntu, just and hour ago everything was working perfectly (as Ubuntu usually does for me) and now it acts as if it's not there.

It all started Tuesday morning. I woke up and turned my computer on. Normally I just leave it on all the time, but I turned it off the previous night for some reason. When I turned it on, everything worked fine for about 10 minutes, until my monitor said "Monitor Working Out of Scan Range." I messed with the settings on the monitor to try and get it back, but to no avail. Restarting would make it work, but for even shorter periods. It eventually would display the manufacturer image (Everex), and then go dead again with the same message.
I thought it was the monitor at first, and got a new one. The new one is a wide screen 18.5 inch Dell IN1910N. The problem persisted, so I knew it wasn't this. I kinda figured it out when I started smelling something burning coming from my computer, and discovered it was the graphics card I installed awhile back. It is the pci ATI X1550, and its fan no longer worked.
So I figured, well, I will just remove it and go back to the onboard video. Doing this worked fine, until I got to the stage where it tried to boot to the Xserver, and then the computer just hangs. No sounds indicate I ever get to a logon screen or anything.
Now, I tried commands like sudo dpkg-configure xserver-xorg, and it asked me a lot of questions about my keyboard, but didn't fix my video. I also tried the "Xfix" option in recovery mode, and it purged all the old fglrx drivers, but that didn't help either.
I am currently using a live CD (I was doing straight command-line for awhile, after I also played hell getting the wireless working). I tried literally coping and pasting the entire contents of the X11 folder over, but that didn't work either (the xorg.conf files were the same anyway). I don't know what to do to get my old partition to boot X correctly.
All the commands I was copying before are not in my terminal now, and I'm not sure exactly what command-line information you need. I know that Openchrome is supposed to run the onboard VIA video, but I don't recall the command that tells me everything about it.

I am running Fedora 13 with a motherboard that doesn't have onboard graphics, so I had to put a PCIE card in to do the install.
However, I am using the box as a file server so I don't need graphics, and would like to be able to use the PCIE card for another computer.
So I took the card out and powered on, waited about 3 minutes and then typed in the login details. I then tried to SSH into it from another computer and couldn't connect, so it must not have booted up properly (I tried a few times to make sure).
I have read about a similar problem that occurs on Fedora 9 when there is no monitor attached - this is apparently solved by adding "nomodeset" to the grub entry, but that didn't work.
There is no X or Gnome/KDE installed and the default runlevel is 3.
PS - also, usually when the power button is pressed there is a pause before it powers off, but without a graphics card the power button turns it off immediately no matter how long you have waited.

Today I replaced my desktop's old Radeon HD 3850 with a new Radeon HD 5670. My system dual boots Lucid and Windows 7. Setup in Windows 7 was fine and the card now works. In Ubuntu, though, I see the Ubuntu loading screen, and then X fails to start and I'm given a blank screen. I booted into recovery mode and started with failsafe graphics; this allowed me to select an option to reconfigure with new hardware. Unfortunately, I perused some older threads on this sort of topic here and tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg from the root terminal accessible in recovery mode. Nothing happened.

Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.
Am currently running my Karmic Koala from LiveCD...

I'm going about my ways to get my drivers installed for my graphics card, but the page I'm using, URL>..has me apt-get install "nvidia-kernel-common".Synaptic says it doesn't exist, and it appears to be a pretty important package to have. So is there a way for somebody to get that online for me to install?

Finished installing Ubuntu 10.10 in my XPS15, intel i5 4g ram, nvidia GT 420M graphics card,
problem is when i go to additional drivers, the driver listed (Nvidia accelerated graphics) when I install it and reboot it the computer starts on the terminal, no graphic interface. All I get is the black screen asking me login and password, when I enter them, just get the terminal prompt in a black screen.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a new acer emachine e525. All is fine except that now I cannot switch the wireless on as the button above the keyboard no longer functions. Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this as wireless is obviously vital in a laptop. BTW the wireless waqs working fine while the machine had Vista on it.

Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

I have been trying to enable compiz on my fedora 14, but when i enable the desktop effects the graphics just crashes and fedora freezes. When i type lspci -nnk | grep VGA for the graphics card i get:
I made alot of research on how to get Intel graphics work on Fedora, but couldnt find any solution
Same problem I had with Fedora Core 12 and 13.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. It is an older laptop with a Radeon Xpress 200m video card, which apparently is unsupported by the newest version of the proprietary ATI drivers. Right now I am using the default graphics adapter that was installed, however, all of my games run abysmally. There isn't one game I have played (World of Goo, Gish, Eschalon Book I) that has played decently. They all suffer from screen flicker and tremendous slowdowns. Is there any option for me since the 200m is no longer supported by ATI?

I just bought a new graphics card and installed it. it works perfectly although my sound worked perfectly this morning and I think the graphics card is overriding my built in sound card. The last time I updated Linux it was from Gibbon to Heron. (so 7.10 to 8.04 ) I'm now trying to get caught back up. Thing is, now that I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 I can no longer get to a GUI. Also, most of the text in the terminal is a diamond character as if the font that's installed doesn't want to work most of the time. This is somewhat confusing, but I believe my system's language was set as Japanese before the upgrade and now it's trying to display Kana and/or Kanji and the terminal doesn't like that. Not really important, but I'm not sure how to proceed to the next upgrade or get to a GUI. Fortunately, my system's set up to dual-boot with windows. Can someone help tell me how to get my GUI back or what package to install?
I'm running on a laptop with an ATI mobility Radeon 9700. I've had problems with it and drivers in previous versions back to 6.10 too, but never to the point that the GUI wouldn't work.It's actually an issue with my X Server. I tried "startx" and it says "No Screens found". I looked in my xorg.conf file and there are two screens listed at the bottom. It produced a log too, but I can't get my Flash drive to mount so I can't say exactly what it says. It did mention that there were a lot of font directories that didn't exist along with a few other warnings.

None of my daemon scripts work now, and the startup process displayed errors. Should I reinstall the OS and start from scratch, or is there a way to recover these files? Is there a way to rebuild the files I deleted?

In Fedora 10, I cannot get to the installer because it shows these messed up strips graphics (its not due to my graphic card, my graphic card is supported 7600gt) in non-quiet install it shows logical errors and i/o errors.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a USB hard drive after booting the desktop installer ISO on a USB flash stick. My laptop already had Windows XP installed on the internal hard drive and i did not load Ubuntu onto that disk. I can no longer boot the Windows OS. My laptop shows a grub rescue prompt with "no such device" error. I can mount the internal hard disk ("system drive") and see all the Windows files from within the Ubuntu desktop installer. Is there a way to restore my Windows system drive to boot or do I need to reinstall?

I installed lucid lynx over a year ago on a IBM A20m laptop. I've been happily using ubuntu up to now until yesterday when I installed Tor and Torbutton. When I rebooted, I got a blank screen after the IBM startup routine. Thinking that somehow the system got corrupted by my Tor installation, I decided to reinstall lucid lynx from the CD. Surprise! The install CD also gives a blank screen!
I hit a key to get the menu and and the three first three choices all result in the same blank screen:
* Try Ubuntu without installing
* Install Ubuntu
* Check disk for defects
To help debug this, I tried setting the F6 option nomodeset and I removed "quiet splash" from the boot options.

I have a Realtek gigabit onboard ethernet (RTL-8110SC/8169SC)It was working in 9.10.After upgrading to 10.04, the connection dropped to 10MB. Now, lspci -v shows the card, but Ubuntu no longer recognizes eth0!I have no connection on the machine. I've been digging around the forums, but can't seem to find what I need.

I've put a second video card in my computer running 9.10(64-bit) to setup a 3rd monitor.
I'm using the following video cards with the 190 driver from nVidia:
Video Card 0: nVidia GeForce 9500 (PCI express x16)
Video Card 1: nVidia GeForce 6200 (PCI)
but when i run lspci the second video card isn't seen in the list. The bios is set to automatic detection, and I've seen it work on a identical second system that has windows 7 so I know the bios is capable of running the two cards concurrently.
I've verified the 190 driver is compatible with the 6200 series and have tested it by setting the bios to use the (PCI) device manually.

I want to run a system that acts as a basic file server, I want to remove the graphics card for the sake of power saving and less heat in the box. My machine can boot without the GPU, and I can ping it and use putty to do things, but I'm still new to Linux and don't really know what I'm doing so GUI is best for me atm.
From somewhere I picked up that this is possible (the XDMCP server machine can have no GPU). This post here [URL].. seems to be what I am looking for, but I don't know how to "convert" these instructions to Ubuntu (the files mentioned do not exist on my install anyway).

I'm using a lenovo notebook with switchable graphics (Intel HD and ATI Radeon 5650), and I'd like to have Ubuntu use the integrated graphics, but I can't figure out how. The BIOS has two graphics options: switchable and discrete. On discrete just the ATI card runs, but on switchable, it seems like both cards are being used. Is it possible to use just the integrated graphics?
