Ubuntu :: 11.04 Crash When Ending X Pid?

Jun 17, 2011

My Foxconn nettop NT-A3500 crashed.

I install Ubuntu 11.04 and enter it. Then I install all available updates(in the update manager), activate AMD/ATI closed source GPU driver(under hardware drivers).

Then I do a reboot(sudo reboot). Then I login and do a VT switch to ex:tty2(CTRL + ALT + F2). Then I input the command "Localhost$ sudo pidof X"

will show the pid I have to kill(kill as root or sudo). Then I kill the pid and the NT-A3500 would crash(usually on first try).

Ubuntu :: Restore After Ending Processes?

May 27, 2010

I started simply to end some processes to see if this would help. Ending dbus-deamon and pushing the shutdown button seems to shutdown the computer and temporarily solve the problem. I see that there are better solutions, so I hope it wont occur again. The problem is, I also ended a lot of other processes, like the clock, trashcan, workpane buttons, the sound button, the WiFi button and the show desktop button (and maybe some more I don't know of. I thought these buttons would automatically reappear after a reboot, but this is not the case. I could add some buttons manually, but I still haven't found the sound button and the WiFi button. Also, when I minimalize a window, it doesn't show anywhere on any panel.Luckily I can use alt-tab

Ubuntu :: Partition On 10.04 LTS - Partitions Not Ending On Cylinder Boundries?

Jan 16, 2011

I have installed 10.04 LTS on a few computers lately (stuck at home due to recent surgery and am trying to kill some time) and have been running into some odd issues and cannot figure out what is going on. I am hoping someone can help me out here. The installation appears to work fine every time. The systems also appear to be running without any issues. The weird thing is that every time I run an fdisk -l command, I always get these types of messages:

Disk /dev/sda: 3221 MB, 3221225472 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 391 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0005437b

[Code]...

cfdisk also gives similar errors:

FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder. I am not doing anything out of the ordinary when installing Ubuntu (as far as i can tell that is). I am not pre-partitioning with external tools for example. I use the Ubuntu installer to setup my partitions.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Load Subdomains Ending With Underline?

Feb 10, 2011

I work as webdeveloper and I and my co-workers have one rule - if we are done with any project, we comment them with underline at the end of the directory name. For example we have domain 'devel.domain.com' and our projects are located on projectname.devel.domain.com' . Commented project looks like thisAnd here is the problem. I can not acces subdomains ended with underline. It works last time in 9.10 (i think), but since 10.04 gives me the browser only SERVER NOT FOUND. We are using this comment-method for 7 years without problems. Why is this problem in last two editions of Ubuntu?note: there is no problem with accessing ended projects under windows or osx.

Fedora :: The Never-ending Of Mounting Permissions?

Feb 12, 2010

I hope I won't get bashed too much on my first post here. The problem I'm experiencing seems to be well known, yet I haven't come across a definite solution to it while searching the forums. I've got an external drive connected to my laptop via eSATA. When I want to mount it as a normal user from GUI level, I'm required to supply the root password since apparently the system's policy doesn't allow external drives partitions to be mounted.

The closest solution to what I would like to achieve is given by giulix in this post. Yet, with the polkit-gnome-authorization utility removed from Fedora 12 (at least so I've heard on mailing lists), it's difficult to find out where to start in terms of policy editing. What I would like to have is being able to mount this volume as a normal user from GUI level. I know I could just add an entry to /etc/fstab, but it just seems so old-fashioned and tacky, and besides, it's not, um, "dynamic" and wouldn't utilize hal and dbus, so I wouldn't have an icon on the desktop. (it's not really the reason, I'd just like to have things done the way they should be right now).

I had an aging RH 7.3 server that I decided was time to upgrade the hardware and software as well. I chose Fedora 13.This server runs an ircd with several bots connected to it. The bot in question is a perl bot based on the old dreambot script. On the RH 7.3 server, it ran forever. On the new Fedora 13 server, it does an EOF and restarts every hour, exactly one hour after it's been started. Is there something limiting the time that a perl script can execute?

Server :: Samba Share File/folder Names Ending In Period?

Aug 31, 2010

The "Dr. C.C." folder name is normal locally on the server, but across Samba it comes out "DMOU3A~H". It's definitely Samba doing it, because I get the same result whether accessing the share from Linux or Windoze. I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 - Error: "no Such Device : <UUID Ending In 4ec05>"

Dec 11, 2010

So I've a computer with a lot of disks which is running Ubuntu 9.04. The setup is made od a software raid 1 array of 200 MB for use in /boot (md0), then another raid1 array of the remaining space as a unique PV for the LVM2 vg0. This vg0 is split in many lv, for /, /usr .... and swap. A few days back, one of the raid1 disk went wrong. So as the raid is built on 160Gb disks and nobody in my town sells so little disks I bought a couple of 320GB disks. The partitioning was made like the original partitions, except that the second partition is way bigger than it was. I replaced the failed disk in the arrays, and now I've an md0 of 200 MB and an md1 of roughly 150GB as it was previously and all is in sync. This replacement was made using a rescue disk (in order to be sure that the machine was not locking anything...)

So I thought it was fine. But upon reboot on the hard disks, I get a fast GRUB message "error: no such device : <UUID ending in 4ec05>. when I start the first Ubuntu entry I get the same error. So I edit the boot entry, remove the "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set <UUID ending in 4ec05> " and boot the damn thing. When booted I ran :

Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?

Jun 14, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:

grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.

All I could think of to resolve the issue was to hit the Power Button and restart my laptop. I am assuming that this is not exactly a good thing to do but at the time I could not think of anything else to do seeing as the screen froze and I could not use the mouse or pressing any buttons.Anybody got any ideas on how to un crash an application with out hitting the power button and forcing a re-boot?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Crash / What To Do?

May 11, 2010

My desktop has suddenly refused to load. I had applied some updates last week. My PC worked fine on Sunday but on Monday when I booted it the system froze at the point where the login screen should appear. The keyboard does not respond to Caps-lock or Crt-Atl-{Del,Backspace}. I can boot into recovery-mode but once I startx I get the same probem.

If I use a slightly older kernel and try to startx I get the desktop backup-ground colour but nothing else, no mouse cursor or menus.

I can't find any problems reported in the logs. Can anyone give me some trouble-shooting tips or have any idea on what I might be able to do?

Sorry if I am short of details but I have to write this from work now that the desktop is dead and I don't have all the details to hand.

Can anyone offer any pointers?
