Ubuntu :: Partition On 10.04 LTS - Partitions Not Ending On Cylinder Boundries?

I have installed 10.04 LTS on a few computers lately (stuck at home due to recent surgery and am trying to kill some time) and have been running into some odd issues and cannot figure out what is going on. I am hoping someone can help me out here. The installation appears to work fine every time. The systems also appear to be running without any issues. The weird thing is that every time I run an fdisk -l command, I always get these types of messages:

cfdisk also gives similar errors:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder. I am not doing anything out of the ordinary when installing Ubuntu (as far as i can tell that is). I am not pre-partitioning with external tools for example. I use the Ubuntu installer to setup my partitions.

i was looking at the list of my /dev/sda partition and on the first partition it says that it does not end on cylinder boundary. does is it need to be fixed? on a book that im reading it says that when you create a partition the end cylinder should be the size of the partition...

I've been searching for a definitive answer/solution for this. Below are outputs from fdisk -l and a partition table listing from expert mode in fdisk. [root@ncc1701 ~]# fdisk -l /dev/sda

Some posts that I've come across indicate no problem while others indicate that it is an issue and needs to be corrected. sda1 is my /boot partition ~ 300MB and then sda2 is a LUKS volume with a LVM VG occupying the rest of the available 500GB hdd. It is my active F 12 system with no dual boot.
1. Is it a problem? 2.Can I just resize sda1 so the end does not overlap sda2? 3. And can I do this while booted from that system or do I need to do it from a LiveCD?

I have a 500g hard drive using dual boot win7 and ubuntu 10.04.2. The system is boot from MBR using Grub1.98. The partitioned as the follows:
system reserve100m ｜win7,42g｜software 100g｜empty 100g｜extended 253g
logic partition is as follows:
| ubuntu / 250g | swap 4g
Since I want to make use of the "empty" part. I delete it and the "software" partition under win7. Then I create a new partition on the part.
After I reboot my pc, the screen shows:
>> operating system no such partition.

I am preparing a dual boot system. Used gparted to do the partitioning. Unfortunately did not notice that one can choose to align on MB (default) or cyl (probably preferable) Now my setup is running ok but fdisk reports warnings like Partition 4 not on cylinder boundary
Looking up the net I see two conflicting views on this:
1. Forget it -- cylinders are not relevant on today's disks
2. For linux this is ok but windows may clobber the adjacent partition in such a 'non-aligned' partition
The real problem is that parted, gparted, fdisk etc are mutually inconsistent in what kind of partition table is 'good' and I dont know who to believe

While trying to get Grub working on my computer, I accidentially overwrote the partition table. Luckily I did a fdisk -l and copied the information before I did anything. The problem is that the first partition "does not end on cylinder boundary" so when I recreated the partition info using fdisk, partition 2 doesn't start in the right place and cannot be read. I have some pretty valuable data on there and I can't afford to lose it. Is there a way to create a partition that doesn't start on a cylinder boundary?

I want to install Arch Linux on my desktop, it is going to be a dual boot with Windows. I booted into the installation CD, but when I started cfdisk to partition my hard drive it gave me the following error: FATAL ERROR: Primairy parititon 1, partition ends in the final partial cylinder.The QuestionHow can I troubleshoot and fix this?Additional details

"You could not allocate the cylinder based partition". I am getting above error while trying to create disk partition in disk partitioning while Redhat installation.
i want to use dual boot system....windows 2003 and Redhat.Win 2003 is installed on 'C:' in my primary hard drive.i have one more hard drive on secondary IDE.secondary HDD having 13 GB unallocated partition. and i want to install Redhat on this partition. But while trying to create disk partition i am getting error "You could not allocate the cylinder based partition". it this time i can create only root or swap partition. plz tell me whats to do in such case.
If i create root partition of 11 GB and leave 2 GB for swap, then can i create swap partition after installation is finished. if yes the plz tell how to do this? Or i can allot 13 GB for Root partition and once installation finished i can create 2 GB swap partition from this 13 GB? Also i will like to know what kind of partitions i need to create at the time of installation????

Why in expert mode does it look like Partitions 2 and 3 share the same sector / hd / Cylinders? Is this OK?

I installed Ubuntu as shown in the wiki and when I went to restart it gave me a lovely blinking cursor and nothing else. So I held down option, loaded into osx, reinstalled rEFIt and got my menu on startup. Unfortunately, the partition sync tool doesn't seam to be working, it gives me an error: Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap. Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi

I'd be very grateful if some charitable person could help with a problem. I have a portion of unallocated space, 15GB, which is situated to the left of all my other partitions (according to GParted). Unfortunately I already have 4 primary partitions. Although I am willing to delete my last partition, I still amn't sure how I could go about reclaiming the 2 portions of unallocated space under one new partition

I'd like to create a swap partition having already reached the four partitions per disk limit. So I'd like to create an extended partition and move some partitions into it. The question is which partitions to move and where to create the extended partition.
Some partitions have so much data that I cannot back them up, so I'd prefer to avoid performing operations that might risk them.
By the way, is there a command line tool that provides equivalent output as gparted?

I had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions,created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3
Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition.It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available?Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:

I'm trying to backup a drive with an LVM2 partition. 8 of the 10 partitions in the LVM restore fine, two do not. SDA1 is the boot partition, SDA2 is an LVM2 partition with 10 partitions inside of it. When I restore the image created by Clonezilla the partition names are there but two of the partitions are unreadable and unmountable. I'm certain Clonezilla is skipping these two partitions because its entire image is around 40G and when I TGZ these two partitions I get an 80GB file. Clonezilla doesn't appear to give any errors and as it "winds up" it shows that it's unmounting the LVM partitions and I see my missing two in its list but when Clonezilla makes the image it never mentions the two I (really) want. I'm trying Clonezilla's DD method right now but it appears to be DDing each partition (going through the LVMs right now).

I have a 120GB HDD with a 22GB partition for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows XP. Windows finally died on me so I attempted a fresh install on its partition. However, the install threw a ton of errors so I used a LiveCD to re-install Grub and I booted into Ubuntu. I open up the disk utility to re-format the Windows partition so I can re-try re-installing Windows, but immediately I notice that the partitions are not right. If you add up all the partitions, they are about, say, 18 million terabytes over my HDD's 120GB capacity. Ahhh! What do I do?
I don't think anything is terribly altered, since I can still boot into Ubuntu, but I am completely confused and slightly worried that I might kill any chances to save my HDD I can't post a screenshot due to my post count, so the image loses some of its efficacy in making it small enough for an attachment. Why is it telling me that my hard drive cylinder head count isn't supported by bios when I've been using this hard drive with this bios for over a year? I mean Linux is booting off the hard drive this is supposedly unsorted apparently and managing telling me is unsupported... so it can't be that unsupported now can it? Sounds more like linux trying to blame bios for linux's problem.

I helped with the installation and put a / filesystem of around 20 GB and a /home partition of around 50 GB. He's a gaming freak and and installed lot of games in the last few days so running out of hdd space and he asked if there was a way he could take one of the ntfs partitions out and extend the / partition filesystem from 90 GB to say 220 GB. (The NTFS partition is around 100 GB).
Now one way would be to do everything (again) from scratch and put the filesystem as an lvm, another alternative googling gave me was to use gparted Live CD and extend the / filesystem . The downer seems to be that its possible gparted would mess up other partitions and realign stuff. At least that's what few of the websites I looked up and few people I talked on IRC spoke to me.

Is there a way where I can take like 50GB from my home folder (I have 375 avail., but using only 22GB) and put it to the root partition? Twice now my system has almost ran out of space on root, so luckly I was able to clear out old stuff so I don't have login issues after finding the hardway the first round lol. I just want to make sure I can login with out being forced back out because root don't have space to let me login.

I have F14 live on a USB stick and the PC boots fine from this.Now I want to install to the HDD but I need to get a handle on the existing partitions.I don't need too much space for linux, can I delete the 3rd and 4th partitions (D drive and EFI partition) and add my linux partition in this space?Investigation so far suggests that the EFI partition is not used and the D drive is empty.

My Foxconn nettop NT-A3500 crashed.
I install Ubuntu 11.04 and enter it. Then I install all available updates(in the update manager), activate AMD/ATI closed source GPU driver(under hardware drivers).
Then I do a reboot(sudo reboot). Then I login and do a VT switch to ex:tty2(CTRL + ALT + F2). Then I input the command "Localhost$ sudo pidof X"
will show the pid I have to kill(kill as root or sudo). Then I kill the pid and the NT-A3500 would crash(usually on first try).

After I formated my windows partition using GParted it became Unallocated and moved under Extended partitions. I can't create the unallocated partition as primary one, or drag it out of the extended ones. I tried GParted live CD also, but nothing worked.

I have a 64bit desktop and 64bit laptop. I upgraded both to 10.10 and they both have the same problem with compiz. Even though I selected the cylinder distortion, the rotating desktops will not deform to a cylinder unless I select "Wallpaper" in compiz but when I do that, the cylinder is completely transparent AND objects (like windows or bouncing/squishing icons in AWN appear not to refresh. Like a window will not disappear after closing.
As an aside, I have four different wallpapers selected for the four different desktops, but none of them display when I select "Wallpaper" in compiz, I just get the transparent cylinder.
If I deselect "Wallpaper" in compiz, the problem with the refresh disappears immediately, as does the transparent wallpapers but the cylinder becomes disabled and I am left with a cube with a single wallpaper and no ability to decrease opacity during rotation.
This has happened with both my desktop and laptop. I have tried uninstalling all compiz components in Synaptic Package Manager and adding them back one at a time in case I added some conflicting components but this doesn't seem to help.
I did not change settings in the updates, so I have to assume that the problem has something to do with a bug in Compiz. The two computers have different video cards and the drivers are up to date, so I'm at a loss.
Has anyone else found this problem? Has anyone been able to display the cylinder distortion with four desktops with different wallpapers?

I am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.

I started simply to end some processes to see if this would help. Ending dbus-deamon and pushing the shutdown button seems to shutdown the computer and temporarily solve the problem. I see that there are better solutions, so I hope it wont occur again.The problem is, I also ended a lot of other processes, like the clock, trashcan, workpane buttons, the sound button, the WiFi button and the show desktop button (and maybe some more I don't know of. I thought these buttons would automatically reappear after a reboot, but this is not the case. I could add some buttons manually, but I still haven't found the sound button and the WiFi button. Also, when I minimalize a window, it doesn't show anywhere on any panel.Luckily I can use alt-tab

Ok. I have a media server running debian amd64. when I installed it I made separate partitions for root (/) home (/home) var (/var) and swap.
I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?

My laptop has a 60GB hard drive, which my ex-husband set up with a 20GB partition for Windows XP and a 40GB partition with Suse 11, which suited me fine at the time. However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.
how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!
