I recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and have been unable to switch to console mode (Ctrl+Alt+Fx key combo). The system just freezes on attempt (not even capslock on off works) and the only option is hard reset. I am on a SONY VAIO VGN-CR353, just in case.
View 4 RepliesI am logging into an Ubuntu 8.04 machine using ssh, so I use a console. The keyboard layout is US-standard, obvioulsy. However, I would like to use french-canadian keyboard layout. And I don't know at all how to switch it in console. Give me Gnome or KDE, and we're done. But this is console only. I guess it has to do with the loadkeys command. Ok. I retrieved from the web a file cf.map.gz. Maybe ubuntu requires a different kind of file? Using "locate cf.map" I get nothing, except the file I have downloaded. Any package I should demand to be installed? (if yes, what do I do once they are in?) I tried using both the .gz and uncompressed files.

They tell us about some program, console-data, using root privileges. Intriguing, but I am only a user, and do not have any root privileges. The system admin. has never used another keyboard layout, and knows even less than I on this matter. I tried similar stuff on my openSUSE at home, on a newly created experimental account, and I am equally unable to change within the console the keyboard layout (similar error messages).
I am using an external monitor on a laptop whose default screen is dead. This works fine with Gnome or KDE, but when i do a switch to console (ctrl-alt-fnX) my monitor loses it's signal, and i wind up with a black screen. Alt-fn7 gets me back fine, but i am really missing the console...

I boot into gnome just fine, but as soon as I switch to console 1 or 2 or N (insert number here) it distorts my video across all of them. It seems like it's changing the refresh rate either horizontal or vertical and I just don't know how to solve the problem. If it distorts I can't get it back to decent readable graphics without a reboot. Was doing the same thing in ubuntu, and that's part of the reason I installed suse. I am running 1600X1200 with 50 refresh rate in gnome and have swapped the console resolution around, trying different options but still have the same problem.

This is very annoying because I would like to be able to log out of GNOME while I am running particularly memory-intensive scripts (they approach the limit of my 3.8 GBs of RAM).

kdebase-3.5.4-20.el5.centos.i386.rpm.
Before I installed the updates, switching to a VT console using ALT+CTRL+Fn (n=1..6) worked, but after installing the updates it quit working within a KDE session. It does still work from the login screen (so it's not an X problem, or a /etc/inittab problem). After logging into a KDE session, I can get to a VT console if I first use ALT+CTRL+F12

There is no option DontVTSwitch line. I have the same problem on another computer. That one is more of a problem because its keyboard doesn't have an F12 key. What to do?
I have been experiencing issues when switching users since my last update; I filed a bug, but I was interested if anybody else was having the same problem:URL...In a nutshell the computer freezes temporarily during the switch user process. The longer it is running, the longer the freeze lasts. When frozen the screen is black except for a mouse pointer; but the mouse and keyboard are not responsive including the usual X command keys (Ctrl-Alt-Del, Ctrl-Alt-Bksp, Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc.).When I get the chance I am going to rollback gdm to see if that makes a difference.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem getting my virtual console back after starting XWindows. The display goes blank when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1. If I press Ctrl-Alt-F7 I get the X session back. I have tried setting vga=x31A on the linux boot up. Also tried rdev -v /vmlinuz -1, and rebooted. I have tried two different monitors, same problem. One is a an LCD (Philips 170S6Fb/27, the other a Samsung Sync Master 750s. Originally the Samsung worked fine. I could switch between X and VC no problem. Now that I have the LCD monitor working after changing the XF86Config, I have this problem.
My kernel is 2.2.15-5.0, Redhat 6.2. Here is the output of lspci for the video card:

Hopefully there is someway to control how linux sets the video mode when switching consoles.
I have 2 workspaces and when i switch to the 2nd one (either with Ctrl-Alt-Left or by clicking with the mouse) after loging in, the desktop freezes. I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the xserver and log in again. Removing the workspace switcher and adding it again does not solve the problem. And I can't find any message in the logs.

As my inspirations forced me to download Kde desktop on my Fedora12 with default gnome desktop. It took me whole night to get the big download by -
"Yum install @kde-desktop"
It got installed successfully.
What I did after that was -
"switchdesk kde"
...Voila...and strange thing happened. The gnome remained there but all the kde features started getting included in there like koffice, kopete etc . Now I waited for around 3 hrs. but only lower task bar of kde got installed and that too very unstable. So I thought of logging out and starting a new session with kde but It never got logged in again. It froze at boot time with Fedora logo, damn.
I have two kernels installed and configured at boot, one is 2.6.31.X (default) and the other is 2.6.32.X which I installed to get my BCM4312 wireless activated and all the activity being done on this.
I just bought an Asus TS mini server. It has an Atom CPU (N280), and an Intel 945 chipset.
I installed Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04, that went smooth.
But on first boot, I see it hanging just after it mounts the swap. Now I don't think it has anything to do with that, the problem seems to me that at that point, it also switches the video mode. I guess that's where the problem is caused. It just freezes, no kernel panic, no reaction to the keyboard.
The system is dual boot, and the other OS is Windows Home Server. I put an ext fs driver there, and tried to read the logs, but don't get a clue from there. In particular, syslog doesn't even exist. Also no X log.
I have been using SuSE Linux in text mode for the longest time (since 8.0) and I'm often more comfortable working in that mode. I have just installed 11.3 with GNOME as a fresh install on my dual-boot laptop and I am pretty happy with the way things work. But I still languish for my text mode from time to time.
So: I know about right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal" and that should really solve my needs, but I read here in an older thread about using Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as it happens, it can be F1, F2, F3, etc.) so I decided to try it out. Well, when I do that, I get exactly what I expected --- a black text screen with a login: prompt and I can do all my little texty things just as sweet as can be. Except for one thing: I can't get back! The only way I've been able to get back to a GUI is to use "shutdown -r now" as user: root. Also, Ctrl + Alt + F1 removes the GUI completely for all four terminals. Can someone tell me more about this function where I might read an "info" or "man" about it? I don't even know what it is called, so it is hard to know how to search. As far as I found out it seems that the init process switches to graphical output. I can switch back into GUI mode using ctrl-alt-f7. Also at times I see the word Ubuntu with 4 dots and 2 of them are orange if that's of any use. Like the initial boot loading screen.
I've tried going back to the default display drivers and that hasn't solved it. I'm using a CRT that's connected up to my display card via a VGA > DVI converter. *I've just checked and I can't get into recovery mode either
After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.
Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop 5745G-7671 laptop. It has an Nvidia Geforce gt 420m dedicated card, and an Intel HD integrated GPU. The problem is, I recenly installed a driver for it (because ubuntu had already found a driver in hardware management). After I did that, everytime I try to start ubuntu, I can no longer see any GUI interface.I have tried everything. I tried restarting X (which doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu 10.10, and tried holding CTRL+ALT+F7 too, but it just displays a few "[ OK ]" messages.

I often reboot them remotely via an SSH session, etc. If a monitor isn't actually active on the PC when it reboots, Grub2 uses a low-res video mode, despite having a higher-res video mode set correctly in Grub2's configuration. If I reboot WHILE THE MONITOR is attached to the Ubuntu PC via the KVM, the video mode is set correctly as configured in Grub2's config files. If I reboot WITH NO MONITOR attached, the video mode is ignored and I'm stuck in a low-res mode next time I attach to the PC via the KVM. How can I force Grub2 to honor the configured graphics setting, despite not having a monitor present at the time it boots?

I can see the bootcycle up to "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated." and then the screen switches into a display mode unsupported by my display. I've had problems like this many times before because the display returns it's capabable of resolutions like 2048x1536, which it just isnt. I've had to disable autodetection whenever using this display. One thing to note thought is that it's NOT X that's messing up the display. It's setting the wrong display mode even before the filesystems are mounted. And I've already uninstalled X with no change either. Also recovery(single user) mode has no proper display output either.
what is setting my display to the wrong mode?
My problem is that I anyway cannot get to the text console when I have run the desktop environment. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Fx (where x - number of tty console), the video adapter doesn't send signal into monitor. Keyboard also stops reacting, only Magic SysRq Key works. The same result I can see when I turn off the desktop environment (I have uninstalled gdm) or kill X-server with the "kill -9" command. The only way to get to console (except window terminal) is remote connection via SSH.
The problem occurs only when I have run X-server. When I turn on the computer, I can see start messages. Since I've uninstalled gdm, I have also access to the console after I turn on my computer. I can normally switch between tty consoles, until I type "startx" command. Everything started when I've tryed to install non-free ATI video drivers. They practically worked, because I've had some problems with them (I just don't remember what problems), so I've uninstalled them and returned to the open. Then this problem apeeared. I tried to reinstall Xorg, change kernel (installed from repos), switch off the framebuffer, but it gave nothing.

At console mode, I set the resolution to 1024x768 through vga=ask.
But the refresh rate is too low at 60hz, and my eyes are uncomfortable.
I tried fbset utility, but it doesn't work on my machine. (There is no response)
increase the refresh rate to 75hz?
After updates installed today, Fedora 15 shut down hangs with the following: 1272,2981621 Panic occurred- switching back to text console. The Caps Lock light flashes and I have to manually shut down the computer. As an aside, I am notified of 65 more updates but, I cannot install them. I'd really like to keep using Fedora.
