Ubuntu :: External USB HD No Longer Will Automount

After some weeks of use and occasional unplugging-when-busy, my 500GB external USB hard drive no longer will automatically mount when I plug it in. The blue light lights up when I plug it in, but there is no automounting behavior. Also, when I type

Everyone seems to what to know how to automount an external USB drive. I'm trying to stop 9.10 from automounting it. Normally I use fstab to mount an external drive where I prefer it to be mounted. But after the last software update karmic (9.10) is now automounting my drive and screwing up the fstab mount. Some how the drive is showing up as /dev/hdd1 and /dev/hde1. I could just shutoff automount but I like it for USB sticks and cameras and MP3 players. How do you stop automount from mounting just an exteral USB drive??

I'm trying to setup my media streaming server, and everytying is going quite well, but there's one thing I don't understand. Can you have ubuntu automatically pick up and mount your external USB drive when you switch it on? I don't like leaving the hard drive running, and I only need to have it on when I want to stream something, but it seems to lose the mount when I switch it off and on again. Anyway to make it automatically detect that it's on and mount it back onto my mount point?

I have an external harddisk (actually removed from a laptop) and I want do some analysis and data recovery on it. I bought a sata-to-usb adapter. Now the problem is: if I deselect media_automount "media_automount_open" and I select "media_autorun_never", the external sata driver is not recognised and I have no /dev/sdb1 to manually mount. Not a hint of a newly plugged drive in dmesg.
Then I re-enabled automount and then I remounted the drives as read-only. Afterward I starter cloning the hd with dd.After some three hours, the f*ck*ng laptop remounted the partition rw and the dd process went into io error. So the question is: how can I safely work with a usb device with manual operations?

I have a problem copying my udev rules from other distro to another pc running debian. My box is running debian without any DE and I want my USB disks to be automounted based on the label; I believe udev is the nicest way to do this task.
Anyways : my rules are (copied from archlinux wiki btw)

I have set up two external hard drives to automount in fstab with the following lines:
/dev/sdb1 /media/DownstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/UpstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
And right after I restart, all users have permission to read and write, and everything is fine. However, I have an automated backup utility (BackinTime) installed to back up particular (mounted network) directories every night, but whenever I check up on it the next day, I get the error "Unable to mount ..... Authorization required". (These network directories are mounted into the local filesystem in fstab as well.) Oddly enough, if I run BackinTime by hand as the users, it works fine. I'm running 10.04 LTS.

When I plug my USB drive in, the kernel sees it and I can mount it manually. However, it won't automount. I've done plenty of google searches but nothing I've tried has worked for 'GNOME, SUSE 11.3.' I am not sure if it is a permissions problem, configuration problem, a kernel automount, HID, or USB problem.

I have a luks-encrypted external drive with lvm on top. When I plug it in xfce prompts me (twice as usual) for the encryption phrase. Then, unlike when I have a regular file system on top and it automounts, I need to activate the volumes and manually mount. Is there a way to make these steps happen automatically?

I'm running Debian 8.2 and trying to set up so I can plug in a couple of external hard drives that will be used to sync data between systems using rsync.
I've got the rsync bit working how I want, thats not a issue. But what I can't seem to get to work properly is when I plug the devices in, they don't mount automatically.
I've tried various methods to no avail so far, systemd.automount in fstab doesn't seem to want to work, for some reason it gives a I/O error. I've tried setting up udev rules and they don't work either, so I'm a bit of a loss now.
Not sure what info to provide that would be relevant at this time, but can add logs as required easy enough.
This machine is headless, so command line only suggestions would be best. I can access X via the network if I have to, but I'd rather do it by cli for ease of access.

I have an external eSATA hard drive that has been working fine for months for backing up (I had been rsync'ing to it every night). For my configuration, see [URL]
I can no longer mount the drive with eSATA (doesn't even recognize it). It was mounted on /dev/sdb1. The drive also has a USB ... I tried that and it mounts fine.
So, my data is ok, but I want to resume nightly backups (via eSATA).

I have a problem with my external hard drive. I've always used to connect it to my Ubuntu Server with the following command: sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 ..and it's worked fine, but after a reboot I did a couple of times ago, the hard drive no longer appears.sudo fdisk -l doesn't show the hard drive anymore. Connecting it to a Windows computer works, I even tried the "safely remove harddrive" function, but to no avail.

I am trying to turn an old desktop that has slackware 12.2 installed on it into a dhcp server that performs nat on a certain range of the subnet... the server's hostname is nutshell. Once I have it set up, I am testing it with a slackware64-13.1 laptop whose hostname is firebolt. Nutshell has a static ip. Before messing with the DHCP side of things, I thought I would start with getting NAT working. The steps I have taken are as follows:
I modified the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf script so that the interfaces would be setup on boot. Eth0 has ISP's static ip assigned to it, and I assigned 172.0.0.1 to eth1. I opened the box as wide as possible, so that former firewalls and security settings would not interfere. The contents of /etc/hosts.allow is All:All, and /etc/hosts.deny is an empty file. The firewall is set to allow everything, i.e., iptables -L has "ACCEPT" as default policy on all chains. Next I used iptables to start nat with the command:

I can ping external ips from firebolt, so the NAT appears to be working properly. I fire up x-windows and surf a little. While I am surfing it freezes. Checking the pings again, suddenly firebolt cannot ping isp's dns anymore. Checking on nutshell, it can no longer ping external ips either. However, after running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart on nutshell, all is well, and it is pinging out again. I go back to firebolt and resume my surfing.

I am running Jaunty 9.0.4. I have go through a proxy to get out to the net. It was working. Sometime yesterday it was unable to resolve the proxy server. Can't even ping it. Other computers can. I even switch cables to no avail. What could block the proxy server? I can't even ping google.com Was it something I installed through add/remove software? Has anyone seen something like this before and even better has a solution or can offer a way to troubleshoot this? I can ping myself and the default gateway server.

I'm running a cron job every night to dump a MySQL database to an external hard drive. It works, however when I check on it the following morning the external is no longer mounted and the XFS log file is corrupted. If I run

I can reset the UUID, but it's difficult to have to do this every day.

The external hard drive which contains all my photos and where I backed-up all my important documents is no longer recognized. It is a three month old 500GB Iomage Prestige Desktop Hard Drive.When I plug it in, it is recognised as a USB device, because it shows up when I type lsusb, but dmesg gives this error message.

I popped the disk out of the casing put it on a SATA connect internally and then tried the file recovery programs testdisk/photorec and SpinRite, but both failed because they couldn't recognize the external hard disk.

I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.
But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).

I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

I have an external hard drive with an xfs partition on it. It was using an external journal, but in re-installing Slackware I removed the partition holding the external journal, forgetting what it was at the time. I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?

I plugged in my external dvd-r (asus) via usb. It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt
after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result
1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)

What am I doing wrong? Also how can I read and write to and form the root of the partition with out opening it as root?
This is not the partition I have ubuntu installed on, this is a 2nd partition.

I have a problem that I can not decide for 2 weeks. Here is what happened: On my laptop, installed just Windows XP. In the past, when I installed the second system, Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 (for dual-boot), Ubuntu asked the administrator password for access to just Windows XP partition. I mean, that just Windows XP partitions were visible, but for the entrance (mount) needed a root password.
Now, in Ubuntu 10.04, Windows XP partition mount automatically and Ubuntu does not require the root password. I do not like it very much.
Tell me please, what do the settings at the time of installation of Ubuntu for just Windows XP that the system would be asking root password for just Windows XP partitions? Is this possible? I think - yes. Because in the past the default 9.04 and 9.10 asked for a password.
PS: I must say, as I put Ubuntu and just Windows: 1. Be installed just Windows XP, giving it 20 GB space 100 GB hard drive. </span>The remaining 80 Gigabytes leave out the implications.

today when I inserted my usbpen in the laptop, automount did not work. I tried another pen with same result. I checked with mountmanager and both pens were working and actually mounted them manually, but automount which worked perfectly yesterday now is dead.I found a workaround installing usbmount from standard repository and now automount works again but usbpens are mounted in /MEDIA/usbx instead with their names as before and I have to open a root terminal tu unmount.
Unfortunately I use a pen for backup with unison and changing the mount position I have to modify unison profile every time, which is pretty uncomfortable.The problem May arise from the fact thgat yesterday I tried to manually compile and install the canon driver for my printer and trying to solve dependencies I had to compile and install Glib-2.26 pango-1.28.3 and gtk+2.22 from their sources.I did not manage to get a working canon driver but i may have made a mess with usb automount function.program/service is responsible for usb automount in ubuntu 10.10 so that i can reinstall or reconfigure it.

My goal is to prevent gnome from mounting and opening up a file browser when any device is plugged in (USB, CD/DVD) for a Desktop User account. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook RemixI modified several settings in Nautilus (Edit --> Preferences --> Media (tab). I Selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion" and unchecked "Browse media when inserted".I restarted the system, but when I plug in a USB mass storage device the file browser window still appears and the device is mounted.I dug down into gconf and found the following registry keys that I believe are of interest:
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_autorun_never (checked)
Has anybody run into this problem and found a solution? Modifying the keys I mentioned above worked for everyone else that has asked the "disable automounting" question (that I've found). Some very old posts mentioned gnome-volume-manager, but it is not installed on my system.
EDIT:This seems to only happen when the Netbook Launcher is started. If Netbook Launcher is removed from the list of startup programs and the system is restarted, I can insert devices without getting a pop-up window and without the device being mounted.

I cannot force Ubuntu to open my data DVDs upon their insertion. It is present, but it won't automount. Of course, in /etc/fstab are no indications for removabledevices, but this is correct, I think.
