Jan 4, 2010

I updated yesterday. I'm not sure if problems started before or after.

The problem yesterday [URL]

Went to bed last night and left the computer running, something weird occured this morning (media file wouldn't play) so I just decided to restart.

now I am getting this,

Mount of root filesystem failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system.

ctrl-d just brings me back to the above error message.

in the GNU GRUB version window I no longer have

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-15-generic (recovery mode)

Ubuntu :: No Longer Booting Up To GUI

Oct 18, 2010

did some updates on the buntu-box but everytime I start it it now goes to some CMD-like screen that lets you go through F1-FX and comes up with diffrent tty thingies, before the update it used to go into the proper GUI, I have 10.10 installed, I think I updated my GPU driver and looked on here for some hints on what to do, I have tried: cd /etc/x11

Above command did not work for some reason, think it couldn#t find it? Sudo service gdm start Said above process is already started or something

Ubuntu :: Grub2 No Longer Booting Into Windows Properly

Mar 22, 2010

so after my upgrade to 10.04 I'm experiencing a puzzling problem with Grub2. It can load everything fine except for XP. I have XP on a separate partition, it is detecting fine and the grub.cfg file is created withou a problem when I the appropriate commands to update and upgrade grub. What happens is that I select Windows XP from the list and it goes to a black screen where a cursor in the top left corner blinks 3-5 times and then immediately kicks me back to the Grub menu. I can do this forever but the grub menu just gets reloaded every time. Any ideas?

Here is the windows portion of my Grub.cfg:

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ntfs

Here is my boot.ini on the ntfs partion I am trying to boot into

Ubuntu :: Remove GRUB2 No Longer Dual Booting?

Aug 7, 2010

I was dual booting on my netbook with Lucid and Windows XP, so the computer starts with the GRUB2 menu. I deleted the windows partition and now I only use Lucid on the netbook. I want to know how can I get the computer to simply boot into Ubuntu like a normal computer would do if it was not set up as a dual boot system?

How can I get the computer to go directly into the ONLY operating system rather than taking a detour through the GRUB menu?

Ubuntu :: Frequent Freezes With Nouveau, No Longer Booting With Nvidia?

Oct 13, 2010

I made a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a Sony PCG-81112M, the graphic cards is identified by lspci as "nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce FT 330M]". Quite frequently everything but the mouse pointer freezed on the screen, I found no way to recover from these situations but to restart the computer using the power button.

I decided to install the proprietary driver (as this is the recommended driver, I was confident this would solve the problem). As a consequence the system now hangs on boot after showing the Ubuntu 10.10 inial logo/text. I could start in recovery mode, but I'm not sure to which driver I should try to change to. I really need no fancy 3d stuff, just a robust computer to which I can attach and detach an external screen.

Ubuntu Installation :: Multi-Booting - CD Drive - Also SATA - No Longer Shows Up

Apr 16, 2010

I decided to install the Ubuntu Netbook remix (9.10, I believe) on this extra IDE hard drive I had (my other three hard drives are SATA.) My primary hard drive contains a Windows XP, my second contains Windows 7, and my third SATA drive is just NTFS-formatted storage. I went through the installer and choose to format and install on my 40GB IDE hard drive, which it did. Then it finished and rebooted. It apparently decided to install the GRUB bootloader onto the primary hard drive (not the one it was installed on,) which was not my intention. The bootloader froze the boot of my computer and wouldn't work. (Stuck at loading GRUB.) I couldn't even get to the BIOS. So I pulled the plug on the primary hard drive and tried to boot again. I could get into Windows 7 just fine, but that was it. The problem, though, is that the CD drive (also SATA) no longer shows up in My Computer. Also, after changing the boot order and replugging in the former primary hard drive, it wouldn't show up, either. Nor would the IDE one (though I'm pretty sure that's because Windows doesn't understand the EXT (or whatever Ubuntu uses) file system.

Does anyone know why this occurred and how to get those drives to show up in Windows again? I don't really care to get the netbook remix working here, since this isn't even a laptop, it was just an experiment. Also, I'd love to know how to remove GRUB from my primary hard disk so that I can boot from it again.

Ubuntu Security :: After Booting Up From The Restored Filesystem - Sudo Would No Longer Work

May 28, 2010

I'm having some trouble using sudo - it did work fine, but now when I try to use it, I have the following error:

I understand that I have to modify /etc/sudoers but need to have root access to do this. I am using a bootable USB (lucid) with persistent changes and am unable to login as root, because I don't know the default root password, and am unable to use sudo to change it.

The problem occurred after I had some corruption to the casper file system, so I booted into Windows, moved the casper-rw file to another location on my flashdrive, and used a 1GB backup filesystem to repair the corrupt one using fsck.

After booting up from the restored filesystem, sudo would no longer work.

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu :: 9.10 No Longer Boots

Mar 2, 2010

The left hinge on my Dell Inspiron 1521 cracked and broke. Last night, I removed the hinge since it had frozen in an "up" position. I had to remove the hinge plate to do so. Since then, I am unable to boot my computer. Whenever I boot up, I see the Dell Boot Screen (like normal) and then the screen goes blank except for a the words GRUB at the top of the screen. I've tried using the Live Disk to recover, but I don't have a "Recover" option on the set up menu and prior to installing, the set up client advises that there is no operating system installed and that I have only one partition.

Ubuntu :: Can't Take Rhythmbox Any Longer

May 16, 2010

I'm using Audacious as my MP3 player, because I just can't take Rhythmbox any longer.I want to set Audacious as the default player for MP3s and Oggs, but I don't seem to be able to. When I open an audio file, it plays in MPlayer. There's an option in the GNOME context menu to open something with a certain programme, so I do that, and then you can choose the programme and tick a box to remember your choice. But the choice isn't remembered - audio still opens in MPlayer.

So then I went to the Default Programmes option in the GNOME Preferences Menu, expecting to find MPlayer as the default media player, but it's not, it's Rhythmbox, which never opens if you double-click on audio files. How do I sort this out and make it so I can set this from one place? It's a pretty big usability fail. How do I make a bug report about it?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 No Longer Using Fstab ?

May 26, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 and everything went fine. I had a cd drive fail(wtf?) and took it out, now apparently everything is messed up as far as what is what (sda/b/c/d etc). I've got 2 hard drives, the OS drive was sdb2, with sdb3 /home and sdb1 an ntfs parition. sda1 is /media/disk. sdc0 was the cd drive.

On the next boot up, it was unhappy that something was wrong with the /home partition.(wtf is that, there is no /home "partition", it's /dev/sdb3!), so I was like.. ok just need to go into fstab and re-arrange things. I open up fstab and, most everything is commented out... so I guess 10.04 no longer uses fstab? What does it use now?

Here's my fstab:

Code:

I commented the last two so that the system would boot. Now it wants home on sda3 and media/disk on sdb1, which is fine, but when I change those in the commented section, obviously nothing happens. I would go through and make the file legible, if I knew that Ubuntu still even uses it.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Will No Longer Startup

Oct 24, 2010

I have been dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu for a few years now, and yesterday I successfully updated my Ubuntu partition to release 10.10.

Today my daughter visited and used my computer. She always boots into Ubuntu rather than Windows, and today I suspect that she may have turned off my computer before Ubuntu had completed shutting down.

After my daughter left for the day, I started up my computer, selected Ubuntu from my Grub2 menu, and got dumped to a command-line interface with the following lines at the end:

mount: mounting /dev on root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on root/proc failed: No such file or directory

Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init

No init found. Try passing init= bootarg

I'm thinking that my Ubuntu partition has probably been corrupted and that I will need need to reinstall Ubuntu. If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to repair or revive the partition without having to re-install the operating system,

On Ubuntu it couldn't mount, it just kept trying and trying forever. On Knoppix it just gave me a heap of CLI output that I have no clue what it means. How can I save all her data?
