Ubuntu :: Karmic No Longer Initializes RAM At Startup?
Apr 22, 2010
this computer (Yakumo model 331, 386 MB RAM) began running really slowly, crashing when multitasking, etc., but only in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. Kubuntu Karmic has no problem, nor does OpenSUSE. I finally figured out the problem when looking at system monitor: 0 bytes of swap! I have a 640 MB swap partition, which the other OS's are able to access, but Ubuntu no longer does unless I open a terminal and type in
Code:
sudo swapon /dev/sda6
If I do this, everything works fine until next time I boot up. Is there any way to fix this?

I've had Ubuntu 9.10 x64 installed on my Asus G60JX-RBBX05 Laptop for a few weeks now, and for the most part its been working pretty well. Then a couple of days ago, I suddenly noticed I could no longer use the numeric keypad. This seemed completely out of the blue, but its possible I received an automatic Update through the Update Manager that hosed it or something. I'm really not sure.Has anyone had a similar experience

I have been dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu for a few years now, and yesterday I successfully updated my Ubuntu partition to release 10.10.
Today my daughter visited and used my computer. She always boots into Ubuntu rather than Windows, and today I suspect that she may have turned off my computer before Ubuntu had completed shutting down.
After my daughter left for the day, I started up my computer, selected Ubuntu from my Grub2 menu, and got dumped to a command-line interface with the following lines at the end:
mount: mounting /dev on root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg
I'm thinking that my Ubuntu partition has probably been corrupted and that I will need need to reinstall Ubuntu. If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to repair or revive the partition without having to re-install the operating system,

As most users, I am new to Upstart.
I am looking for the easiest way to get my workstation running with the needed services. At this time, these include SSHD and Music Player Daemon.
I ve installed both and they work when activated manually by sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start, or mpd respectively. But I don t have a clue as to how to start them up with an Upstart job?
I ve tried this code...
but to no success.

When i log in, i used to be able to be able to start doing things on my desktop straight away. Now when i log in, it takes about 8 seconds for the panel to appear etc. I looked at startup applications and the problem isnt in there i believe, as i have less running than what comes with a fresh install.

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

Before karmic while I was using Jaunty, I used to do it all the time, play my favorite sounds wherever I was them, startup, error, login, logout, etc etc... I found it in System>Preferences>Sound...
But when I do the same in Karmic, the opening dialogue box doesn't give me an option to change every sound specifically, instead, although it gives me option to choose a sound theme of my own. But for that I must first compile a theme and then install it / place it in sound themes directory etc etc.
How would I change sounds for particular events without having to compile a whole new theme (customizing the current Ubuntu sound theme)...
how do I create sound themes for Ubuntu and them install them in my Ubuntu?

I've been running 10.04 (lucid, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-25-generic, GNOME 2.30.2) for about 3 or 4 months and everything has been great, until yesterday.
All of the sudden, bootup has started taking longer than usual and the panel at the top of the screen with "applications", "places", etc. doesn't appear until the machine has been running for at least 2 minutes.
Also- the mouse and keyboard (and my external hard drive), all of which are usb, do not respond until about 2 minutes after startup appears to have finished.
So, basically, here's what happens when I power the machine on:
1. Everything functions quickly, and as normal, until my desktop picture shows and the icons on it appear.
2. Whereas before I would have had mouse and keyboard use (and use of the top panel with applications, places, etc.) at this point, I don't have use of any of these.
3. So I just wait, without keyboard or mouse, etc. for about 2-3 min and all of the sudden the top panel emerges, the mouse and keyboards start working, and then the external hard drive appears.
4. As if this weren't annoying enough, after everything above starts to work, opening applications (e.g. firefox) takes a lot longer than it used to. Basically, starting any application after startup takes a long time the first time it's opened.
I don't understand why this is happening. Before this, startup was super fast, and everything was working great. I dont know how to check into recently loaded updates, but perhaps something got changed there that is causing the problem.
I haven't changed anything hardware related at all, so I don't imagine the change in performance is due to anything on that front, but I could be wrong.

I have a laptop with Karmic Koala in dual boot with Lenny. I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?

I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.
But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

I have installed ubuntu on numerous computers, but for some reason I am getting this problem on this computer. When I try to log in GDM flickers then goes back to the user selection screen. After like 10 attempts i can log in. It doesn't always do this either. Hopefully these log errors will help solve this problem.

Has anyone gotten Kshowmail to work with karmic 9.10? I had it working back with 8.04 after a lot of effort and a great deal of help from another source (which involved installing kmail and kdesk also to fix dependencies), but I cannot seem to come up with any scheme that will work with 9.10. It "seems" to work if I get the .deb package from sourceforge, but when I open it and put an identity in it, it fails to work and gives me a message about not being able to recognize "pop", or something like that, despite the fact that thunderbird is certainly using pop for downloading . . .

Is there anything in Karmic that would get something to run at shutdown?I have a US Robotics 56K message modem ( USR5668 ) which receives faxes during the day, and has to switch to answer machine / fax at night. It has a memory when the computer is switched off - which is handy, and all the phones switch over to the message modem extension automatically. All I want is to do is send the command AT+MCA=1 to the serial port ttyS0 at shutdown.
Any sportster owners might say that this goes to answer machine only, so if they want to tell me the correct string for answer/fax please feel free.I do have vm installed (or whatever vgetty calls it),

I just set up a new karmic server, and the hostname is being set properly, but I'm not exactly sure how, since there is no longer an init script that sets it (it used to be /etc/init.d/hostname.sh on my older servers). Now I'm curious: what is the new mechanism by which the server's hostname is set at boot time?

since I installed Karmic 9.10 (fresh install, kernel 2.6.31-20-generic) my pc keeps freezing up...
I think it must have something to do with my videocard because right before it freezes the screen goes blank and when it comes back (yes it does!) it is frozen... Sometimes it happens fast and sometimes after 30 mins or so...Still haven't figured out in which direction to search...Anybody know why or have tips? I am almost ready to re-install 8.10

Been several hours trying everything up to and including blueman. Things SEEM to be working, but try to browse files on my Nokia phone I still get
Could not display "obex://[00:1F:5D:33:2C:BD]/".
Error: Connection to the device lost
Please select another viewer and try again.
Not sure how to try to connect, phone sees computer and vice versa, but can't get a connection. The phone asks if I want to accept the connection, I press accept, the window comes back with Connection Failed: Network Manager Failed to activate the connection. If I try a serial connection it says Port already in use. I don't actually know what that means.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the newest build for LyX properly (ie not from building it myself) for Karmic. I do
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade lyx , but it doesn't pick up the 1.6.5 (although it looks like it is prepared to ship out with Lucid. Any ideas on how to get it to just work? It's these minor problems with Ubuntu being slow to upgrade to the newest builds of software (ie Firefox 3.6) that makes it a little bit frustrating. Maybe I should learn to program so I can help out more...

I gave away both of my copies of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala to friends to turn them onto the Power of the Penguin. Now here I sit with a fresh install of 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx and I still have problems. They're different problems then when I did the upgrade through Update Manager, but problems non the less.
Is there any place where I can get a clean download of 9.10 Karmic Koala? I just need to reassure myself that I'm not crazy and that it is not my machine causing the problems.
