I've just installed Ubuntu desktop 10.10 (32 bit). No matter what programs I run, the CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) drive is checking for a new CD/DVD every 5 seconds or so (even if no applications are running). It is quite annoying because of its robotic noise. The drive is empty. How could this be turned off? Is the media manager misconfigured by default?
View 1 RepliesMy system: Ubuntu 9.10/gnome Gateway SX2802 with Intel Q8300, 4GB ram, 750GB drive only 6 months old. My internal drive is read/writing continuously without stopping no matter what I am doing. It begins immediately after boot. It simply runs and runs nonstop. This is with NO APPLICATIONS running. This is a problem which cropped up suddenly after 5 months of running just fine. What I have tried:
1. Disconnecting Internet - no change
2. Looking at processes in System Monitor. Well, everything says "sleeping" and there isn't anything that looks obvious to me, but there are a LOT of processes. I am afraid my drive will simply burn up.
I exchanged my CDROM drive for DVD drive. The DVD is recognized in the BIOS (will boot to DVD install disc) and in CentOS 5.2 (when I list the hardware), but CentOS must still think it's a CDROM drive. When I run VLC in a terminal it kicks back these errors code...
I think this means that "hdc" is linked to a CDROM configuration somewhere, but I don't know where to find it to change it (or out it). It also appears thee is no DVD module loading. (Of course, I could be making poor guesses.)
I thought there might be something in the fstab, but it doesn't appear there is anything there (for the CDROM or DVD drive)?
Is there somewhere else I should be looking? /dev/*** ?
My cdrom drive was working until yesterday it didn't mount at all. It said 'special device /dev/scd0 does not exist'. I went and checked in BIOS and the CD rom was not identified there as well I would like to know if there is a workaround for this problem. View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh Maverick install on my old Medion laptop (MD 42200), and a problem occurred.
The problem is that the CDROM-drive is not recognized by Ubuntu. There is no icon on the desktop when I insert a disc, and I can̈́'t find it in either /media, /cdrom or /dev.
I can see it in the standard Disc Tool program, where it is listed as being located in /dev/sr0, and it is visible in a downloaded Device Manager.
What can I do to access my CDs?
My cdrom was sort of working, but the tray was physically damaged. The usb was working without a problem.
After replacing the the cdrom drive with a similar model known to work well I could not get it to mount. I then tried to move important files to usb to try a fresh install. The usb stick flickered when I put it in, but it didn't mount. Same behaviour as the cdrom, the light goes on when I turn on the computer, but once I'm logged in I can't access the cdrom.
I have tried multiple variations of playing with fstab and trying to mount things in terminal to no avail. I just can't get Ubuntu to recognize the usb or cdrom even though their lights go on when I first try to use them.
I browsed through the forums last night for several hours looking for a solution to this and nothing specific to 10.10 came up but i tried several of the methods suggested for previous versions yet none of them seemed to help. the disk spins up when inserted but ubuntu doesn't even show that the drive exist .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Fedora 14 and have a problem where I am not getting any kernel uevents for the cdrom drive.
This only happens if I do an install without the X Windows (Gnome). Also if I install CentOS 5.5 without any X Windows I do get the uevents for the cd drive.
So the problem is occuring when doing a minimal install (with Base packages and a few others) on Fedora 14.
I am running in vmware workstation 7, but I have also tried to install this without vmware on a seperate pc with the same results.
One slightly strange thing is that Fedora with X Windows detects the cd drive as VMware_IDE_CDR10 and Fedora without X Windows as CDDVDW_SH-S223L (which it really is).
I am using "udevadm monitor" to watch udev events, and "udevadm info --query=property --name=/dev/cdrom" to get the cdrom details.

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.
- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.
So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked
I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.
The CDROM/DVD drive in the new computer was defective. Everything is working now.
My ancient Dell desktop finally kicked the bucket but the hard drive was relatively new (less than a year old).So I replaced that old desktop with a new desktop (not Dell this time) and decided to just plug in the old hard drive - to see what happens.Well, I was pleasantly surprised when Debian booted up and executed as normal (ok then, ALMOST normal)!
The problem is that the CDROM/DVD-RW is not recognized.For example, I have an audio CD in it, but neither file managers or multimedia players can see it (where 'it' is either the CD itself or the CDROM device).
I've tried GUI applications like mplayer, kplayer, Vlc, dolphin, pcmanfm; and I've tried the command line as well (bash).Short of doing a complete reinstall of Debian, is there a way to get it to recognize this 'new' hardware?
just installed squeeze today, all went well but when I put a cdrom or dvd disc in it will not auto mount.. have to manually mount them from terminal. I've looked a /ect/fstab and do not see any problems there. Anyone else run into this problem on a squeeze install and fixed it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and burned the Fedora-13-x86_64-dvd iso to install on my shiny new box (MSI NF980-G65 MB, AMD Phenom II x4 945 CPU, 8GB Corsair DDR3 memory, generic ATAPI DVD drive, 2 500GB SATA drives, 2 1.5TB SATA drives). I boot from the DVD and and take the default install/upgrade option on the menu. I've tried with the default boot options and with about a dozen different options, all give the the same thing.
Looking console 3, shows the following:
ERROR loader: removing ddmode.conf failed
ERROR loader: got to setupCdrom without a CD device
It can't find the CD/DVD drive that it booted from. The install on console 1 is prompting for a driver to load. Do I need to download a driver for a generic ATAPI/IDE CD/DVD drive?
I inserted a disc and tried to access it through Dolphin. It shows up in the directory explorer thing as a disc and with the disc name, but it has a little / thing in the bottom corner of the icon, and when I try to access it, it gives me this long error on the bottom of the file area (can't remember what all it said, something about 'harvey' and being unable to find the directory in /etc/fstab). The same thing happened with an external drive, which seemed to work fine before but now has the same problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new CDROM drive, as recommended by HP. It still doesn't work. I can open and close it now; so that's changed. But it still doesn't appear as a drive, and I can't use it.
Here's as best as I can describe it:
When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time.
In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer.
In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount.
If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.
I tried to mount my CD Rom drive and got this response: "mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
I did see the CD Rom drive briefly after I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 but I couldn't access the drive and when I logged back in.
i am currently running palimpsest (system -> administration -> disk utility) and letting it "check" an unmounted filesystem.
i know its just running fsck.ext3 on this drive... the drive is formatted ext3, and is used on a hardware media player (WDTV Live Plus) in another room... i just moved it in here to avoid copying recorded HD shows over the LAN.
anyway, i was informed at boot with this drive connected that it needed to be checked, after booting it is mounted, but says it has errors and needs to be checked. it is checking, i would assume messages from fsck.ext3 would be logged to /var/log/fsck/checkfs, but i have never been interested in this type of thing before... usually when my drives start to get errors, its time to replace them... this one im sure is caused by being unmounted incorrectly by the stupid WDTV Live Plus...it locks up sometimes, lol...
i dunno, this is a big drive. just wish there was some "status update" other than a whirling indicator... im tailing the log file i mentioned above, but so far it just has "Nothing has been logged yet." (which i take as a really good thing at this point.
EDIT: at the very end of the filesystem check, i got a message about the filesystem being clean with no errors. id still like more of an indication than "whirling indicator thingy"...guess ill go back to CLI for checking filesystems. lol

View 1 Replies View Relatedi got my powermac g3 up and running as a file server, i added a sata card and two 250GB hdd's which i promptley formatted as ex4, today i noticed one of the drives (the empty one) shows as having 11gb used, at first i thought it was a artifact of samba, but i cheacked the atual comp and ubuntu shows the drive as having 11GB used but it is compleatley empty? i then cheacked the outher drive which about 30GB of data on it, but it shows as having 40GB used?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have successfully setup a FOG server to image my Windows clients, so I have tftp, pxe and anything else related to booting to a pxe server setup and rocking. What I'm trying to do now, is use the CentOS net install files to setup CentOS on an old server with no USB boot option, and a broken scsi cdrom drive (it's a Dell PowerEdge 2400, with a single PIII 733 and 1.25GB ram).
Using the FOG Projects gparted wiki entry (adding gparted to the pxe boot menu) I was actually successfully able to pull the net install files over to the PE, and install CentOS 5.5 via local ftp server. At first it kept erroring out (I kept picking and choosing individual packages from the package groups), so I thought it may be an issue with the GUI install (the python script kept spitting back errors forcing a reboot). In any case, I finally got through the GUI install, but now I need / want to know how to force a text mode install.

the bolded "append" line is where I thought I could force the text mode install script, but that didn't work. The vmlinuz and initrd.img files were both pulled form the net install iso, NOT the livecd. Would that have made a difference? If not, what / where / how should I force the text mode install script?
I have been running 10.4 with no problems for some time now. Today when I booted up it started checking the drive for errors, and I just left it to do its thing. I came back to this warning screen: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly.
I've tried all of these with no luck. When I select to run to low graphics mode, it says "Stand by one minute while the display restarts...OK".I select OK and then it gets stuck checking for battery state.I try to reconfigure the graphics, and nothing happens when I select any of the options on the next screen.

I have a piles of files in the .Trash-1000 folder on my flash drive that I want to delete. I can see them if I go in as root using the command line and entering "gksu nautilus" but it still wont allow me to delete them.
I am completely new to Ubuntu/Linux and am having trouble getting my DVD-ROM drive to work. I've tested a few things, and it seems that if there is a CD in it when I boot, then it works fine, but if there is nothing in it then Ubuntu won't list the device. The DVD-ROM is master on a PATA cable and the CD-RW is slave (yes I know it's getting old now...) Drives worked fine under Windows XP. I have just installed Xebian on my Xbox (original) with a view to making a NAS and it seems OK so far except everytime it boots I get a message saying that the drive has not been checked for 49445 days (or similar amount). It then forces a check which takes ages. Any ideas how to stop this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on an system which already has XP installed. I had used Ubuntu earlier but when I installed XP ( in an attempt to dual boot) I seem to have lost the Ubuntu Installation. But the problem is GParted or the Ubuntu installer dont recognize the existing partitions but instead see it as an empty unallocated drive. I have a 120GB hard disk. Below is the extract after fdisk:

When I load the disk I can view my backup drive properly but when I try to view my working drive it shows it as being empty. I also noticed that I had a 1 mg unallocated partition at the beginning followed by my ubuntu partition.
I then ran gparted in terminal and it did show the partition as having my system on it but I am not able to perform any tasks. No moving or resizing.
Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new HP desktop, and I want to install Debian on the hard drive. I ran the Windows program on the Debian CD to start the install.
I selected Manual drive setting, and resized the large C: partition to 50 GB. I want to install Debian in some of the free space, only their isn''t any free space! The 400+ GB I took out of the C: partition is labeled "unusable" instead of "free space."
If I double click the unusable space, I am just given the cylinder/head/sector numbers. How I can make that space usable?
I would boot my Gparted CD, but I don't know how to get to the BIOS. The boot screen goes right to Windows without showing me the key to get to the BIOS. I tried hitting DEL, but to no effect. Do you know what the HP computers use to interrupt the boot?
