Debian Hardware :: Squeeze Not Mounting Dvd Drive Or Cdrom?

Mar 6, 2010

just installed squeeze today, all went well but when I put a cdrom or dvd disc in it will not auto mount.. have to manually mount them from terminal. I've looked a /ect/fstab and do not see any problems there. Anyone else run into this problem on a squeeze install and fixed it?

Debian :: Accessing / Mounting A SD Card On Squeeze?

Feb 27, 2011

I've tried to search online but I can't find anything that works on our netbook. The netbook has a default Squeeze installation. After inserting the microSD card (via a "microSD card adapter" into the built-in slot), when I double-click on "Computer" on the Gnome desktop, it shows "Multiple Card Reader", but I can't access it. fdisk -l doesn't show any new devices, but dmesg does show the following:

[ 2532.101119] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2542.344135] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2558.588138] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2558.836073] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8

[Code]....

I can't mount /dev/sdb or mount /dev/sdb1 (fdisk only shows "sda1-3"). The system simply reports that "special device sdb does not exist", although during one attempt I did get a message saying "block device sdb (or sdb1) something...".

It's imperative that I can access this microSD card. It will be put into my mobile phone so I can have the Star Trek: The Next Generation theme tune as the ringtone. I'm sure you all - as will all of humanity - realise the importance of this endeavour

Debian Installation :: Can't Open CDROM Drive While Installing VM 7.6

Oct 9, 2014

VirtualBox 4.3.14
Windows 7
Debian 7.6

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.

- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.

So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked

I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.

Debian Hardware :: New Desktop With Old Hard Drive - No More CDROM / DVD

Feb 28, 2016

The CDROM/DVD drive in the new computer was defective. Everything is working now.

My ancient Dell desktop finally kicked the bucket but the hard drive was relatively new (less than a year old).So I replaced that old desktop with a new desktop (not Dell this time) and decided to just plug in the old hard drive - to see what happens.Well, I was pleasantly surprised when Debian booted up and executed as normal (ok then, ALMOST normal)!

The problem is that the CDROM/DVD-RW is not recognized. For example, I have an audio CD in it, but neither file managers or multimedia players can see it (where 'it' is either the CD itself or the CDROM device).

I've tried GUI applications like mplayer, kplayer, Vlc, dolphin, pcmanfm; and I've tried the command line as well (bash).Short of doing a complete reinstall of Debian, is there a way to get it to recognize this 'new' hardware?

General :: Mounting A CDROM In Ubuntu?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm using a software that needs to read data from a cdrom. The instructions say to mount the cdrom (mount /mnt/cdrom). I understand that I need to mount the cdrom to /mnt/cdrom. I created a folder "cdrom" under "mnt". Then I tried to mount the cdrom by typing:

sudo mount /media/ /mnt/cdrom/ This didn't work. Under "media" I have another folder with the actual cd content so I tried to mount it too, but again with no success. I keep getting an error that "media is not a block device". What I am doing wrong?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Change CDROM Drive To DVD Drive?

Mar 31, 2009

I exchanged my CDROM drive for DVD drive. The DVD is recognized in the BIOS (will boot to DVD install disc) and in CentOS 5.2 (when I list the hardware), but CentOS must still think it's a CDROM drive. When I run VLC in a terminal it kicks back these errors code...

I think this means that "hdc" is linked to a CDROM configuration somewhere, but I don't know where to find it to change it (or out it). It also appears thee is no DVD module loading. (Of course, I could be making poor guesses.)

I thought there might be something in the fstab, but it doesn't appear there is anything there (for the CDROM or DVD drive)?

Is there somewhere else I should be looking? /dev/*** ?

Debian :: DVD Drive / Packet Writing / Squeeze

Jul 25, 2011

for the last three days, I have been trying to get my drive ( LiteOn iHas624 ) to work. Unfortunatly, it seems that I can only use the burner with Nero4Linux or Brasero, but not K3B.DVD-RAM/+RW packet writing seems neither to work out of the box, nor by the setup as suggested in /usr/share/doc/udftools/README.Debian or the media4linux howto(just to name the most promising, i definitly read more on the issue).

I tried to format the DVDs in various udf revisions, as well as ext2 just to check, but without success. As I am close to the point where I would rule out the possibility to obtain package writing capability, I dare to ask for help.I would be very grateful for any hint or reading recommendation on the issue.
Yours, Benjamin.

Debian :: DVD Drive Not Playing Audio CDs In Squeeze

Jul 18, 2009

Having recently bought a new box (HP Pavilion) I discovered that it is using sata HD and CD/DVD. As there are no specific switches to use when installing to sata drives, I assume that Debian Squeeze is configured to work with sata drives "out of the box", which, in my case, it is failing to do. For the sake of completeness, these are the issues I am encountering, in no order of priority:

* DVD/CD-RW can read data CDs
* Can write to DVD and CD using K3B
* Can play DVDs that I've burnt
* Typing "eject" (no quotes) on the command line will open the drive

But:
* Cannot play audio CDs - Rhythmbox is the only application that can. Amarok does, but then doesn't update track lists when a new CD is inserted and I must quit Amarok and restart it for it to pick up the new track lists. KsCD can identify the tracks but does not play an audio CD (even when the config file is changed to point to the drive). Goobox claims "invalid device" even though when using it on the command line I set the "--device==/dev/sr0" (no quotes) to point to the device. When I press the eject button, Goobox seg faults. I have tried a number of other applications, including cdplay, workman, cdcd, and a couple of others the names of which I now forget, some GUI and some command line. None of these have been able to play the audio CD, and many have claimed drive does not exist at all, again, even when manually pointed to it.

* Cannot play pre-recorded (i.e. commercial) DVDs, irrespective of the application used. To make DVDs work, I must go into the folder and double click the correct VIDEO-TS file (*.vob)

These are the specs, taken from dmesg:
ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 2.025513] ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z, 4403, max UDMA/33

[ 2.049891] scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z 4403 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

[ 5.232678] Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
[ 5.241216] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 5.241216] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
[ 5.241216] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
[ 5.279572] sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
[ 5.279572] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5

This is confirmed by hardinfo and uses a scsi1 controller. The kernel I am using is kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on an AMD Sempron Dual Core 2300 and I am running Squeeze with no other OS. Is this an issue with GNU/Linux generally or with Debian specifically? Interesting, but one Google search showed that Fedora didn't have such a problem but when the user switched to Debian he found a similar issue. I don't think that the drive itself is broken and nor do I think that changing the drive for something else will work, because I'd still have to use the sata connections.

I have formatted and mounted the disc and found a script he wrote to automate the backup run from a cron tab. Looking through the script the mount commands dont look quite right to me particulary as the owner will swap drives every day. everything else appears to be working fine! the command to mount in the script is'

mount /mnt/usb

unmount /mnt/usb
I think it should be' mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
and to unmount . umount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb

Debian Hardware :: External Hard Drive Not Registering / Mounting

I am wondering is there a Linux way of getting the hard drive to work again? The disc spins up so it's not a mechanical failure. I'm guessing here but is there a way of flashing firmware onto the external HD if that might be the problem?

Debian :: Squeeze Will Not Show Free And Used Disk Space On EXT4 Drive

Feb 23, 2011

This weekend, I installed Debian Squeeze on my server. I've formatted all the hard disks to EXT4, and I'm using kernel version 2.6.32-686-bigmem.When I tried to install the program saidar, it surprised me why it does not show my hard drives under 'mountpoint' [URL] <-- Saidar screenshot) as I could when I ran with Debian Lenny with the same kernel, but where the hard drives were formatted in EXT3. My laptop which has Ubuntu 10.04 as OS and the hard drive is formatted in EXT4 can easily show the hard drive in saidar.
I also tried to install PHP SysInfo on the Debian computer, but it does not bother to show anything on the hard disks

I tried to check fstab file and I can see that Debian uses UUID to identify the hard drives, but I've tried to change it to something with /dev/sdx, but it did not help either.[URL] (fstab file)

I know that Debian squeeze is very new, but it would be nice if someone could give me a hint what might be wrong, because I am a little tired of all time to use 'du-hs' command To find out how much space is spent on the various drives, since the command is a little slow, since hard disks are well filled.

Fedora :: No Kernel Uevents For Cdrom Drive?

May 17, 2011

I am running Fedora 14 and have a problem where I am not getting any kernel uevents for the cdrom drive.

This only happens if I do an install without the X Windows (Gnome). Also if I install CentOS 5.5 without any X Windows I do get the uevents for the cd drive.

So the problem is occuring when doing a minimal install (with Base packages and a few others) on Fedora 14.

I am running in vmware workstation 7, but I have also tried to install this without vmware on a seperate pc with the same results.

One slightly strange thing is that Fedora with X Windows detects the cd drive as VMware_IDE_CDR10 and Fedora without X Windows as CDDVDW_SH-S223L (which it really is).

I am using "udevadm monitor" to watch udev events, and "udevadm info --query=property --name=/dev/cdrom" to get the cdrom details.
