General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Suddenly Disk Drive Is Running Continuously - NonStop?

Apr 29, 2010

My system: Ubuntu 9.10/gnome Gateway SX2802 with Intel Q8300, 4GB ram, 750GB drive only 6 months old. My internal drive is read/writing continuously without stopping no matter what I am doing. It begins immediately after boot. It simply runs and runs nonstop. This is with NO APPLICATIONS running. This is a problem which cropped up suddenly after 5 months of running just fine. What I have tried:

1. Disconnecting Internet - no change

2. Looking at processes in System Monitor. Well, everything says "sleeping" and there isn't anything that looks obvious to me, but there are a LOT of processes. I am afraid my drive will simply burn up.

General :: CPU Fan Running Continuously On A Laptop / Is It A Problem?

Sep 13, 2010

I have dual boot on my machine - Windows Vista and Fedora 12.

I have noticed that while I am on Vista, the fan runs only intermittently, but while I am on Fedora, it runs continuously. I have tried to tweak the power and CPU settings for Fedora, but did not get anywhere.

Should I be worried that the fan is running continuously? Or is it okay, the fan is just doing its job?

Ubuntu :: Disk Drive Running Constantly?

Apr 15, 2010

System:
Ubuntu 9.10
Gateway SX2802 (Core 2 Quad)
4GB RAM
750GB drive

Everything was fine for the first 6 months. Now in the past couple weeks, my disk drive is running nearly constantly. I can hear it rattling away in the background no matter what I am doing. Typically, I just have Firefox open, and that disk drive is sounding like it's writing the whole thing over and over.

I've opened the system monitor and looked for something obvious, but everything says, "sleeping". The computer seems to operate fine - no crashes, no odd behavior. What's this thing doing?

General :: USB NTFS Disk Suddenly Won't Mount - Partition Gone / Repair It And MBR Without Losing Data?

Sep 12, 2009

Just ran into an uncomfortable problem. I usually never save any documents on my machine, and keep all my stuff on an external USB hard disk. (an 80GB TrekStor DS microdisk q.u)
Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.

Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...

Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.

How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Continuously Checking Empty CDROM Drive?

Nov 25, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu desktop 10.10 (32 bit). No matter what programs I run, the CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) drive is checking for a new CD/DVD every 5 seconds or so (even if no applications are running). It is quite annoying because of its robotic noise. The drive is empty. How could this be turned off? Is the media manager misconfigured by default?

is this something worth buying? if i do buy it, where do i apply it? to the fan somewhere? i've already taken this thing apart a couple of times, i don't mind doing it again, but i'd like to have an idea of what exactly i need to aim for.

Ubuntu :: Wine System Tray Suddenly Started Appearing Its Own Little Window When Running Netmeter

Aug 13, 2010

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find out why the Wine System Tray suddenly started appearing in its own little window when running Netmeter, cluttering up the desktop. I searched the web in vain, back many tears, most people saying they couldn't understand it when it happened to them.

Then I realized that the last thing I did was to stop Cairo Dock (the novelty had worn off!) and to move the Gnome Panel to the BOTTOM of the screen in place of Cairo. I suspected this was making the Wine System tray homeless.

So I moved the Gnome panel back to the TOP, restarted Ubuntu, stopped and restarted Netmeter and the Netmeter icon appeared back in the panel where it belonged.

Would I be correct in thinking that Wine System Tray will only stay in the panel if the panel is at the top of the screen?

Red Hat :: Running IPmonitor To Monitor The Disk Usage On Our Servers - Running Df -h

Mar 19, 2010

We are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Suddenly Starts Spinning And Won't Stop ?

Mar 5, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 10.x for several months without any major problems. Everything was fine until this week.

In the past few days there's been a strange new problem. When I turn my computer on, it works fine for 10 minutes, and then the hard drive suddenly starts spinning and won't stop. While this happens the computer is virtually unusable. Mouse moves slow and jerky; apps don't respond; and eventually the windows close by themselves, the whole screen goes blank, and the system reboots. The whole process takes a long time, sometimes 30 minutes.

The only change I made just before this problem started was upgrading Firefox Beta 4 version 10 to the latest version 11. So, I deleted it, and went back to the latest stable version 3.6.x. That seemed to fix the problem for a day or so. But then it started happening again. I deleted all signs of Firefox; it still happens. So it's not a browser issue.

I am stumped. Today I started my computer and just let it sit there without opening any programs at all except the system monitor. It ran fine for the usual 10-15 minutes, nothing changed out of the ordinary in terms of computer resources used in the system monitor, and then suddenly the drive started spinning wildly again .....

Right now my computer's been on for 10 minutes and I am typing this message .... but who knows what will happen right now.

General :: Ssh: Continuously Synchronize Files, One Way?

Aug 1, 2011

Scenario: An IDE is set up on a Linux desktop box, editing PHP files locally. Every time I save a file, I want this change to appear on the linux server where Apache is running. The server has ssh (and samba and nfs for that matter). As a reference, when I edited files on Windows, I finally came over WinSCP as the exact tool I needed - WinSCP have just this feature present, with initial synch and then continuous update, using the filesystem watch service: "Keep Remote Directory up to Date".

On Linux, one could argue that sshfs could be employed to sidestep the need for synchronization entirely. On windows, a samba-share would do the same. However, I want the IDE to work with local files (on a SSD disk!), not having to go over the network to do PHP indexing and whatnots, which takes ages. But sshfs might be a part of the solution nevertheless - so that the continuous synchronization just needed to be done between two local directories.

General :: Installation - Partition A 220 GB Disk Drive For Redhat 4.8?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm installing RHEL 4.x to a hard disk that already has windows 7 enterprise installed. I would like to dual-boot both the OSes. The hard drive size is about 220 GB (of which windows 7 occupies about 50 GB).Now, is there any free and friendly tool that I can download to partition this drive ?RHEL comes with a text mode (disk druid) to partition and I could not figure out how to resize the existing windows partition. So, I'm assuming that I need to abort the linux install now and proceed to boot from another CD that contains a good partitioning tool and then later resume boot from RHEL install disk. Also, what should my partitions look like ? What size should they be ? The system is a new LENOVO with 4 GB RAM on a i5 core processor.I know that I will need atleast 5 partitions. right ?1) /boot2) /3) /home4) swap5) /var

General :: Using Flash Drive As Editable HD Not Just Boot Disk?

Sep 17, 2010

I recently acquired (another) older laptop in need of a hard drive. Lower capacity IDE laptop drives are getting hard to come by from reliable sellers. I'd like to rewire a USB port, and run it into the hard drive slot, running the system off a flash drive rather than a hard drive. I'm running in to the problem I can't find any way to set it up. The system does not support any BIOS options for messing with USB drives. Why it CAN boot off one is beyond be, it's not in the temp boot menu, but when I leave it in, it boots off USB by default. I tried loading Ubuntu, and I have tried copying the files off of a setup hard drive to the flash drive, but I have yet to be successful. Is it even possible to run a linux off a flash drive so I can keep a desktop environment, rather than having it reset to the default ISO state every time I reboot?

I don't have the original windows vista disk, I don't believe the computer even came with one, and no back up disks. Apparently this is the only way to format VISTA. When I am in the command prompt here is what happens.

C:> format c:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Enter correct volume lable for drive C:
I don't know the correct label.

Searching on the forums I found this.
format c:/fs:NTFS/p:/
That doesn't work. I get this:
