My computer was working before perfectly. But today, when I tried to powering it on. It stuck and freeze after "ubuntu 10.10" logo, and nothing happen after. I can't access to the os (gui) anymore. Is there is a way to make it return to a previous working day (system restore, like windows) or a command line that I can fix it from the booting error?

I also have Passwords: Login seperate from default This is annoying having to enter the keyring password @ boot time.

How to access the grub boot menu on ubuntu 10.04 cause due to a couple of days ago i had to reinstall ubuntu cause of this crappy program called STARTUP-MANAGER SCREWED my computer. and wouldn't let me start up. it kept coming up with a message saying input signal is out of range so i had to reinstall ubuntu losing EVERYTHING. i was thinking about rolling back to xp but i thought what the heck il give it another go. how do i access this grub boot menu. cause holding shift while starting the pc up does NOT work. im using lucid lynx 10.04.

For whatever reason, Windows will not get rid of its bootloader and I cannot access my BIOS settings. I've tried spamming every function key that I have when it boots up but nothing happens (if I press ESCAPE when I'm at the boot menu it restarts). Any idea on how to get rid of it and get me my bios back?

Anyway, I did a dual-boot with XP, which had it's own issues, but which I figured out with some info. Now my problem is I can't access the internet from within Ubuntu. It's finding the hardware, I think.

last night i install ubuntu on my pc while installin there was a windows reporting a grub installing error it saids " grub cant be installed here" and it gives me the choice to select where to install it,the problem is that i have 2 HD one of 80GB and the other is 160GB in the 80 gb HD i have windows xp already isntalled and in the 160 GB HD i was installing ubuntu, i choose to install the grub in the 160 GB HD and now when i turn on my pc i can only access ubuntu is like if my HD with Win xp just disappear

View 2 Replies View RelatedI managed to install a second hand 10Gb HDD on my old P4. I want to see how I can use this extra disk to speed up Ubuntu 10.04 if possible.
I installed my swap onto this second drive but since I never use swap I can't see any real improvement. Next, I'm considering the creation of a new partition on that disk that would handle /tmp. Could that improve access times?
Finally, what other tricks could I use with this 2nd HDD to speed things up?
I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.
Have win 7 on one drive and ubuntu on 2nd drive then son goes and deletes partition that Ubi was in ,now cannot access any system all i get is grub rescue on screen and i cannot boot with any thing taking a guess the grub bootloader has died and made a mess of the windows bootloader.

I'm hoping to do something similar to the way you can install Windows on a Mac's 'Boot Camp' partition, but then you can also open that partition as a Virtual Machine using Parallels or VMware from within OS X.That way for the quick stuff, you just fire up the VM, but for the more 'intense' things, you can boot into Windows natively.The difference here being I want to use Ubuntu instead of Windows. (Don't care if I use Apple's 'boot camp' mechanism or a third-party boot manager either.)

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was running a 2-partition hard drive, Windows Vista (lamentably) on one partition, and the other running Ubuntu. I began having trouble with the Vista partition, so I attempted to move as many of the files that I really wanted to keep as possible over to the Ubuntu partition, and then reformat and reinstall the Vista partition. As a result, I could no longer boot to Ubuntu, and I consistently got errors back from everything that I tried on the Vista partition.
The only way that I can now access anything on the hard drive is to insert the Ubuntu install disk, go into trial mode, then mount the partition. At long last, here is the problem: Is there anyway to possibly make the partition bootable again so that I could burn the files to a disk? From trial mode I can get to a number of the files on the mounted partition, HOWEVER, they are secured with the username and password of my user account on that partition. Is there any way that I can access the files from the trial mode by entering my username/password?
How do I do this at my modem page?

This seemed to work fine although I didn't really use Ubuntu too much. Then last week I decide to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 12. I selected the replace existing Linux option during the install process.
After installation, Grub displayed 2 options: Fedora and Other. Fedora was fine, other didn't boot. After readinf around I added another option for vista, but this results in the following error:

I'm new to the principle of network boot and I was wondering if this is possible. Computer A runs openSUSE. Computer B is an older, slower computer. Computer A and computer B are connected using an Ethernet cable that supports two-way transport. Can I use network boot on computer B to use the OS on computer A remotely while computer A is being used too? Does it involve RDP? Will the remote user experience noticeable lags/delays? What do I need to install on computer A to make this happen?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):

except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.
I have Mandrake 7.1 installed on a laptop and I have several problems that an upgrade would likely fix or provide a path that will support a fix. The Mousepad is irratic and the PCMCIA WiFi and Ethernet cards are not recognized. What's a good way to upgrade? (I can access the network from an external modem and from a dual-boot Windows 98 WiFi)
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter adding a second ubuntu variant to this machine I wanted to share the home directories so I had easy access to the same files regardless. so I read up on modifying home directories and put in the correct location and then rebooted. On boot-up the system warned me that it could not access the "shared" home directory and after a few more errors and warnings ended up at a blank screen with a mouse pointer!. All I can do is access a term window (ctrl-alt f4). So what I need is to know is where the user properties are stored so I can go and edit those from term rather than the usual way!
