Ubuntu :: 10.04 Halted While Booting ?

Dec 17, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 has halted at screen showing progress graphic (Ubuntu name + 5 circles), it just keeps cycling thru this. No disk activity. I booted using live CD, Gparted detected the hard disk. What should I do next? Do a Gparted check and repair? That's assuming it's a disk problem but perhaps it's something else.

The motherboard is fairly old, about 6 years, it's an Aopen AX4SG-N with 4Gb RAM, but it goes thru the bios boot OK, no complaining beeps etc.

I'm thinking of a complete reinstall but would like to check other possibilities first (and maybe work out what happened).

Red Hat / Fedora :: 12 - Halted On Booting With An Error ?

Jan 29, 2010

I have Fedora12 with dual boot WinXP on my laptop. Everything was working fine but suddenly one day I booted up my system and selected Fedora from boot menu , an error screen came - "[...]ERROR: tried to remove a fb that we didn't own Boot has failed, sleeping forever"

I don't know why It's happening ? The last thing I did on Fedora was to install some packages to start Wi fi and It was working fine from last 2 months, then why suddenly this bug ?

I googled about it but most of the cases are of Live CDs or USBs but in my case I had a whole different space assigned in my hdd for Fedora and everything was supercool.

Does it mean I have to do a fresh install of fedora12 again ?

Ubuntu Installation :: NO ROM BASIC System Halted?

May 12, 2010

I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

Ubuntu Security :: Incompatible Processor System Halted

Apr 27, 2011

The computer went into low graphics mode all by itself and then later threw a error that said incompatible processor system halted!the computer was getting really slow and made alot of noise.later the computer did something stranger..it restarted but normally when my computer normally restarts it bypasses the password page setup in bios of the computer. This time I still had to enter a password before it could reboot.Another thing...when it the ethernet cable was connected to the computer (internet connection was on) it was slow when it was unplugged it was not.I have read that unless you're running a server or something it is highly unlikeley you'll be hacked.

I tried to push keys on the keyboard, nothing helped (I even couldn't put on CAPS or num lock on the keyboard). After a secoind reboot I didn't even saw the Ubuntu logo. When there's a black screen, it just sits there.I have no idea if there was a kernel update (I assume there was, because the system wanted me to reboot)

OpenSUSE Install :: Minor Updates - Fatal Error - System Halted

Mar 1, 2010

Since yesterday my computer behaves really strange. I fear it's a hardware issue. At most I did some minor updates, but no big software or OS change.

When I turn it on it goes immediately to [url]

I guess it reads

Code:
Chasis intruded
Fatal Error... System Halted.

So this happens before the boot manager... When I press the reboot button it goes to the boot manager and works seemingly fine - all I noticed that it doesn't remember the time, or better remembered the time form the last usage but doesn't count it forward. While using the time seems to pass in a normal speed.

What could this be? Some chip on the mainboard broken? Some BIOS virus (does something like that exist?) Or maybe just a cable which got lose?

I don't know which other informations could be helpful. I built it myself some years ago and the parts are pretty random (back then I didn't even know about linux compatibility nor used it at all). I have a dual boot with openSUSE 11.2 and windows xp, but the network card is deactived in xp for a year at least already.

Ubuntu :: "System Halted" But Won't Powerdown / Sort It?

Feb 22, 2011

I'm running Mythbuntu 10.10 on a new build machine.

Everything seems to be running pretty well so far apart from this one issue. It won't powerdown when I try to shutdown the machine.

I've got the nVidia drivers installed (and haven't tried fixing the splash screen yet) so I get the "Ubuntu 10.10" text and the coloured dots when shutting down.

The screen says "System will now halt" and you can then hear the harddrives power down but the display and CPU fan stay on. The only way to shutdown is by holding the power button in.

Interestingly, the system reboots just fine - (I've not tried suspend/hibernate yet).

I've looked at a number of solutions code...

I tried deactivating the proprietary drivers and hoped this wasn't the answer as I need them to run XBMC - shutdown still not working.

So... I'm all out of ideas now.

I've reported this as a bug so if this sounds similar to what you're experiencing please say it affects you too - (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/721706)

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu :: Fastest Booting OS ?

Jan 3, 2010

About finding the fastest booting operating system is out there.

I'm especially interested in Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Intel Moblin, and when my internet comes back tomorrow, xPud. I'm kinda freaked at Moblin though because there isn't an option to split the hard drive to account for its space, and even if there were, I'm freaked that a GRUB won't show up Ubuntu or even Windows 7

My requirements:

1. Boots up in 5-15 seconds on 1.3GHz processor/4GB RAM or within 10 seconds on a netbook which has 1.6GHz Atom and 1GB RAM

2. Has to have a good-looking window manager (so a customised Linux distro with something like Fluxbox/Blackbox is out). Something like what's in netbook designed OS's are good

3. Has to actually be able to run good on laptops that aren't netbooks, for I'm hoping to run the OS on proper laptops too

4. Can be propiertary, though open-source and free is good too and preferable

5. Has to have a GRUB so I can switch between Ubuntu/Windows 7/whatever fast-booting OS it might be or at least an easy way to switch between the 3. More preferable is that it comes as an .exe that can be installed inside Windows, like xPud

Ubuntu :: Booting Various Iso Images From Usb?

Mar 24, 2010

I've searched for answers in google, but get not i wanted. I wanted to prepare bootable iso from usb under Ubuntu. Fine, there's UNetBootin, dd if= of= command etc. But I am concerned and the specific type of iso images booting - AntiVirus rescue cd's.

Using UNetBootin i could only prepare thumb drive to boot Dr. Web Rescue CD, but neither Kaspersky Rescue Disk nor F-Secure Rescue CD couldn't be preapred well (NOTE that my BIOS can boot livecd from usb drive!). Using dd if= of= command also didn't worked, cause prepared thumb couldn't boot - get errors: "Missing operating system" or "Could not find kernel image: linux". Is it that i must install grub/lilo or syslinux on thumb, then edit .cfg file and then copy image, or what? I'm concerned only on AV Rescue Disk's, like: Kaspersky, F-Secure, GData Boot CD, BitDefender Rescue Disk etc. I've booted (and it worked) Symantec boot cd but it's based on WinPE and i had prepared thumb under Windows 7, so it's a completely different story.

I have Bootable USB Drive Assistant in my Ubuntu 9.04 but when i try to choose some of those cd's, i get error that "It isn't installable CD image, so application can't use it" or something like that. What application do i have to use then?
