Ubuntu :: System Halted During Boot - Swap Waiting For UUID

I've just upgraded my wife's netbook to UNR 9.10. This seemed to go well and the netbook has been working fine since. Yesterday my daughter used the netbook with out any issues, but when my wife tried it halted during boot with:
Swap waiting for UUID: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
After a couple of reboots it started working fine, but looking at /etc/fstab the entry for swap is different to the UUID shown in blkid Do I just update fstab with the UUID from blkid?

Someone (not me) recently installed some new distros on my HD. It seems that during the installation my swap partition was reformatted and a new UUID was assigned to it. I have the following questions:
1. I know that I have to change the swap partition UUID in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst of the affected distros. Is there anything else that needs to be changed?
2. I presume a similar change has to be made to the Grub 2 configuration, for those distros that use Grub 2. I have no experience using Grub 2 so how do I make the change or where can I find instructions to do it?

Been doing some installations in a newly upgraded machine where I'm setting up two instances of 8.2 in slightly different configurations.Installing from netinst AMD64 DVD with firmware non-free. First installation goes smooth as then the second changes the UUID of the swap partition, meaning that the first then can't find it. To add insult to injury the second installation doesn't install GRUB in the MBR of the HDD.
Nothing different or special about the installation which is standard graphical with manual allocation of previously set up partitions. I don't touch the swap drive in the partitioner - just point to the correct partitions for / and /home as I want them. This is exactly as I've done before, many times.Setup asks me if I want to install GRUB in MBR and I answer "No" (because it would otherwise load in MBR of sda where I want it on sdb) then point to sdb in the next screen. Again really nothing different to what I've done dozens of times.

I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

The computer went into low graphics mode all by itself and then later threw a error that said incompatible processor system halted!the computer was getting really slow and made alot of noise.later the computer did something stranger..it restarted but normally when my computer normally restarts it bypasses the password page setup in bios of the computer. This time I still had to enter a password before it could reboot.Another thing...when it the ethernet cable was connected to the computer (internet connection was on) it was slow when it was unplugged it was not.I have read that unless you're running a server or something it is highly unlikeley you'll be hacked.

So my Ubuntu 9.10 install has been hanging on boot lately. At first I thought it was a problem with the 2.6.31-20 kernel, because that is the default boot option in GRUB2. It seemed things worked fine if I instead chose the 2.6.31-19 kernel, but I had that hang yesterday too.I also had 2.6.31-20 boot just fine yesterday. Once. Next time I tried it - system hang.
What I mean by "hang" is,I would see the GRUB OS selection screen (I have 2 versions of Windows and 2 versions of Ubuntu on this machine),select the first choice (Ubuntu with the 2.6.31-20 kernel),see the "pulsating white Ubuntu logo" briefly,then a bunch of scrolling text, then...blank screen.Then nothing.I let it sit for a few minutes to a few hours when it did this, but nothing further happened.Then yesterday, I decided to let it sit the whole time I was at work, approximately 9 hours.I came home to a screen with the white Ubuntu logo and the following error message:

So it looks like I have a disk partition that refuses to mount sometimes.Gparted for some reason wouldn't tell me the UUIDs of swap partitions.They also don't show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Using the bootinfo script, I found out that 3fba81a3-de14-4f56-9e7b-ace95d933a0e is the 4 GB swap partition associated with my Ubuntu 9.10 install.The disk that partition is on is rated "healthy" by Disk Utility, with only a few bad sectors. The HDD is about 7 years old, so it's in remarkably good shape.What could cause this swap partition to not mount during boot, and how do I fix it?

The system asked me to reboot and I just shut down the computer.Some hours ago, I wanted to start the computer and the system halted after the first logo showed of Ubuntu, after 15 minutes waiting, nothing happened. I tried to push keys on the keyboard, nothing helped (I even couldn't put on CAPS or num lock on the keyboard).After a secoind reboot I didn't even saw the Ubuntu logo. When there's a black screen, it just sits there.I have no idea if there was a kernel update (I assume there was, because the system wanted me to reboot)

I'm trying to install 10.10 64bit on a DFI X48 mainboard with 8Gb RAM, I've tried installing from the Desktop CD, Alternate CD and USB stick, but all attempts fail with
uncompression error
-- System halted
I've run memtest86 and the RAM passes OK, I've even tried running the install with just 4Gb RAM but without any luck. I've even tried three different CD/DVD drives.10.04 64bit runs from the Live CD without any problems, but 10.10 isn't playing ball...

Since yesterday my computer behaves really strange. I fear it's a hardware issue. At most I did some minor updates, but no big software or OS change.

So this happens before the boot manager... When I press the reboot button it goes to the boot manager and works seemingly fine - all I noticed that it doesn't remember the time, or better remembered the time form the last usage but doesn't count it forward. While using the time seems to pass in a normal speed.
What could this be? Some chip on the mainboard broken? Some BIOS virus (does something like that exist?) Or maybe just a cable which got lose?
I don't know which other informations could be helpful. I built it myself some years ago and the parts are pretty random (back then I didn't even know about linux compatibility nor used it at all). I have a dual boot with openSUSE 11.2 and windows xp, but the network card is deactived in xp for a year at least already.

There is something that I am not getting here. I get the following when I try to start my XP virtual box stuff. I take it that I actually need an XP disk to do this?

I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?

I'm running Mythbuntu 10.10 on a new build machine.
Everything seems to be running pretty well so far apart from this one issue. It won't powerdown when I try to shutdown the machine.
I've got the nVidia drivers installed (and haven't tried fixing the splash screen yet) so I get the "Ubuntu 10.10" text and the coloured dots when shutting down.
The screen says "System will now halt" and you can then hear the harddrives power down but the display and CPU fan stay on. The only way to shutdown is by holding the power button in.
Interestingly, the system reboots just fine - (I've not tried suspend/hibernate yet).
I've looked at a number of solutions code...
I tried deactivating the proprietary drivers and hoped this wasn't the answer as I need them to run XBMC - shutdown still not working.
So... I'm all out of ideas now.

Problem: I have installed two Ubuntu servers, 10.04 32-bit and 10.10 64-bit, in a multi-boot environment (also have FDOS and WinXPsp3). The 64-bit will not boot because grub can't find the UUID for the disk with the 64-bit system.
Brief Background: Installed 10.04 LTS two months ago with no problems. 10.04 is in a primary partition on hda with FDOS.
Installed 10.10 (64-bit) in a new primary partition on the same hd. The install seemed to go ok, but the MBR and the fs on the 10.04 were corrupted; could not boot. Restored drive, and rebuilt grub.
Installed 10.10 on separate hd (hdb). In grub step all OS's were recognized so I pointed the grub to hda. Grub failed to boot.
Rebuilt grub from 10.04 on hda. All systems recognized but 10.10 will not boot because it says it cannot locate the UUID specified.
Compared the grub.cfg for both systems, the UUID specified for hdb is the same. Also, when I mount the drive for 10.10 on the 10.04 system the drive UUID is consistent.
I know I must be missing some thing, but I know not what. Have searched and can't find any clues. All other OS's boot ok.
Hardware: AMD64 4GB, 2 internal IDE drives (hda and hdb), 1 internal SATA (hdc WinXP), various USB and Firewire Drives (no bootable systems).

I've spend the morning poking through forums and attempting every fix suggested and still no luck on this one:At first i didn't have any sound. But now I do (and I'm not sure which solution fixed the problem). But I still don't have a Sound icon in my menu bar and when I attempt to access my Sound Preferences I receive the message: "Waiting for sound system to respond" which display indefinitely.
I tried:
- removing and reinstalling alsa packages
- deleting the .pulse folder
- adding a Pulseadio daemon

I am running RHEL 5.3 for Power Series blade technology. I am trying to initiate a halt of the system from runlevel 3 and have the system stay powered on once the system has been halted. This works on RHEL 5.3 for x86/64 system by typing halt -h. However, this same command in RHEL 5.3 for Power Series will halt the system and power it off. I would like the system to remain powered on and sit at the "Your system has been halted" message. how to accomplish this?

Something wrong regarding grub2 (on 9.10). Yesterday everything worked fine and has done for several months. I didn't mess with anything yet when I booted from grub today it informed me that my UUID doesn't exist and that it's given up waiting for root device. I should also mention that it no longer does the 3 second count down either (not sure if thats significant). I can boot into my other linux and windows without issue. This only seems to affect all the ubuntu boot option. This is all way beyond me but I've searched around and tried the fix where you add all_generic_ide to the boot command but that didn't work. I also worked out how to check the UUID but the number look alright.

is it safe to change fstab UUID entry for the system to /dev/sdb4? and after editing fstab, is there a script or command I need to run to release lock or update mount information? edit: I see not correct, and therefore not safe,but is there a format to tell linux to use /dev/sda1 instead of UUID= or label= .

I am very much new to Linux programming. My question is Is there any way to read UUID of a device or partition in linux programatically. Is there any c/c++ API for user-space applications. I found some commands "sudo vol_id --uuid /dev/sda1", "sudo blkid", "ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/". But all are commands which we need to run in terminal. But i need to achieve this from a c/c++ program. Can some one help me in this problem.(FYI: I need to read uuid of root filesystem ("/") where Linux has been installed.)

I cloned one of my hard drives to another, using Acronis True Image Home 2011.In the process, of course, fstab got copied verbatim from old to new.I then, using a livecd on a flash drive, mounted the new drive, went into fstab and rewrote the UUID's, using the numbers I'd gotten previously by doing sudo blkid.Now, the new drive had the UUID's revealed by that command.Then, I used boot-repair, from yannubuntu, to make that drive bootable, since it wasn't after the cloning and after the fstab rewrite.The drive is bootable, and it's mountable from a flash drive, or from the old drive.
I can access files either way.the fstab file on the new drive still has the old numbers, yet when I ran boot-repair, it apparently changed the UUID's for sectors 1 and 5 on the new drive.fstab seems to be irrelevant at this point, yet everything I read about it indicates that it is not only relevant, but necessary.I don't understand how I can be accessing the drive when the fstab contains UUID's that are no longer pertinent to any hardware on my system.

I just installed ubuntu 10.04 although everything works fine I have a problem related to sound, When I click Preferences/Sound I get the message "waiting for sound system to respond" and actually it does not respond at all. Although, I have downloaded, compiled and installed linux drivers from realtek website it did not fix the problem. internet which is simply deleting .pulse folder and restarting it didnt work either.At the moment I am using terminal alsamixer for controlling sound level but even the maximum attainable volume is too low.

When I was upgrading my system (ubuntu server edition) today from 8.10 to 10.04 (of course in small steps: upgrade version after version) everything seemed running smoothly. But when I restarted it, it gave an error message: Gave up waiting on root device. Screenshot of error and grub menu attached. I've read some information about it and applied the possible workaround given here: [URL]. My system is very old and so is the HDD: it uses an IDE connector. Typing 'exit' doesn't work either.

So, I followed the verbatim instructions from Alsa to OSS here:[url]
I did this in hopes of getting sound in Fusion 3.63 to work.
Now, when I try to go to System > Preferences > Sound, it just says "Waiting for sound system to respond" and just hangs there until I hit cancel.
Also, when I plug-in my headphones, it plays through the headphones AND the system speakers.

I put my two SATA hard drives in a new computer (new mb, cpu, no pci SATA adapter, built-in nVidia graphics), and I thought everything was going well. The Mythbuntu logo came up, but the bar at the bottom did not move. It eventually dropped me out to a (initramfs) prompt.
When I used the recovery mode, this is where it had problems:

I posted this first to thread 'Boot problem - "Gave up waiting for root device.", (initramfs)' then realized that I should start a new thread because the problem is not the same. On boot the splash goes black and nothing happens, On a recovery boot it drops into shell BusyBox and messages indicate that the root partition cannot be found. After booting from CD Gparted GUI partition information shows no label or ssid for the root partition sda2. The data for the root partition appears to be there. how to fix this? My /home, swap, and / are on separate partitions formatted ext3. I have a recent backup only for my data. I would like to avoid having to rebuild my system from scratch.

I'm running 64bit Lucid. I've recently had a severe problem with my softraid (5) array, and have had to recreate the array to fix it. However this now means that something is up with GRUB/initramfs, and booting times out while waiting for the root device (md0) to be ready. /boot is on a normal partition, not the raid array itself. A friend of mine has rebuilt my initramfs file with the new UUID, but now I get the message: 'Kernel panic not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (9,0)'.So my question is either how do I sort this error, OR how do I rebuild initramfs/grub in a way that will boot?
