I was messing around with the synaptics file in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d, the last change I made was adding Option "SHMConfig" "true". But now I can't boot past the purple screen with the white/yellow dots?
View 1 RepliesSetting up CentOS 5.5 on my laptop. After installing the synaptics driver, I am able to get a functioning X session without any problems (I'm using startx for testing). There are however two problems: 0/ mouse cursor is slow as snails and 1/ GNOME is fouled up.
- I've tried enabling SHMConfig in my xorg.conf file, and have also tried the HAL thing here. Either way synclient tells me to jump in a lack. I should be able to set suitable adjustments in xorg.conf, but running synclient -l to see what it's currently using would be much faster than hours of trial end error. As Google totally fails to provide anything helpful and I see nothing handy in documentation beyond the 1-line edit to xorg.conf I've already done, how in the universe do I actually enable SHMConfig to synclient's satisfaction? EDIT: scrolling doesn't work either, so access to synclient is even more important; on the upside I have manually tuned the mouse speed by T&E.
- GNOME was installed through the "GNOME Desktop Environment" and "GNOME Software Development" groups (yum groupinstall GNOME*) after net' installing CentOS. It has been startx'd through gnome-session. On startup I get a string of Windows: one is a dialog saying that there was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon with a last error message of "Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session". The other two are dialog windows gripe about mail notification. Several icons are missing but gnome otherwise works fine, as long as I do nothing that requires SETTINGS. Searching the web and documentation hasn't helped here either, so how the flub do I fix that?
I expect to be using blackbox or something lighter most of the time, but as GNOME is the default.... it better be working!
i installed ubuntu 9.10.. i remember splitting my HD into 125gb/125gb and i installed ubuntu 9.10 on one of them.. worked awesome. now i wanted to play some games so i wanted a dual boot system.. i have a windows vista ultimate CD and i installed it on the other 125gb. installation went fine now when i boot it always goes into vista. how can i enable dual booting with vista?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed Debian Lenny ("stable") on my Dell Inspiron 640m laptop, with Win7 in another partition and data in a third VFAT partition. I want to tame the ####ing Synaptics touchpad.
So I installed xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, which has put syndaemon in /usr/bin. I understand that this app disables the touch-pad while typing, just what I want.
But syndaemon doesn't run at bootup, and when I try to run it manually I get:
<syndaemon> returns error "Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?"
<man syndaemon> warns "needs SHMConfig "on" in your XOrg/XFree86 Synaptics Touchpad configuration"
How do I enable SHMConfig?
I don't understand what more i can do, the bellow is what i have done. is there a conspiracy against me??? (ive been through 3 distros and spent the better part of 2 months , i mean literally, all day every day, trying to get one distro to actually function at reasonabe capacity and each one is full of its own problems ) now:

Just did a clean install of 11.3. After first try, system couldn't boot for hard drive. When installing a second time, I noticed that booting from a boot partition and the MBR are disabled by default. I enabled both and proceeded with the install. System now boots fine. Since the automatic partitioning created a boot partition, I'm assuming that that is where the system is booting from and I didn't need to enable booting from MBR, but am not 100% sure. So make sure to at least enable booting from a boot partition

Networking is not exactly my strong suit, but I would like to get this up and running if at all possible.
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I am trying to install the IDS component barnyard2 on RHEL 5. I am following the snort enterprise insall document by Patrick Harper. For installing barnyard, after the tar command it says to perform a ./configure --enable-mysql The --enable-mysql does not work: configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --enable-mysql --with-mysql does work. Is there a difference? Next, using --with-mysql, I get a failure at the end:

I've been running 10.04 on a partition of my Dell laptop successfully for weeks. Now, I get the login screen, and when I give my username and password and click "Ok" it logs in, looks like X starts, then immediately goes back to the login screen with the drum sound (is that a bell?). If I type the wrong password, it doesn't log in, so I know it's getting past authentication.
I've tried logging in as one of several users.
I've tried running in recovery mode and running "clean", running "repair packages" (it downloaded and installed a lot of packages), running in safe graphics mode (failsafeX). None of those had any effect.
I've tried looking in /var/adm/messages and looking at X logs that are presented in safe graphics mode. I see tons of stuff, and none of it obviously stands out as an error.
It is likely almost out of disk (maybe 300M left?), but I can't find evidence that that is causing this problem.
I'd like to somehow repair my Ubuntu install without wiping it.
I would like to enable more tty's.
I am using Maverick Meerkat .
After reading some about it, it seems that I could copy and rename any
off tty /etc/init/ttyx.conf (expect tty1 which is special for security mode _and_ normal mode)
But after reboot whit tty12.conf - the screen went wired and a lot of error-messages was all over the screen, so I had to remove it again.
I followed these commands to disable pulseaudio in ubuntu 9.10 and now it seems I've broken gnome-volume-control. How can I go about undoing these changes???

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to enable my second monitor after upgrading from 10.04 to 11.04. In the process of upgrading, I had to delete my xorg.conf file because it was causing errors and preventing the desktop from displaying.
So I tried using gksu nvidia-settings to enable the second monitor. If I enable it in TwinView, nvidia settings can apply it, it shows up but I can't use it.
If I try to enable it as a separate X-screen (which is what I had in 10.04) nvidia settings is unable to apply the settings, and so I have to save it as an xorg.conf file, which then causes my desktop to no longer display.
how to enable the second monitor any other way. Is there some new settings file I should know about?
Long story short... I have sifted through endless docs.. some that I understood and some that I didn't, I have posted in these forums twice (not one response) and asked my local LUG for ideas and I got nothing.
I have an audio mixer that I am desperate to get working with Ubuntu 9.10, and despite working fine with Vista (so I know it's not my hardware or Mic's etc.) I can't achieve this to save my life.
At this point, I would like to just go with what works and stick with Vista, but like a fool it was me who suggested to some long distance collaborators that we all try to use Ubuntu. Now I am the only one not working...
I am frustrated to no end here. But I figure I will ask one more time and pray that someone can help me here.
How can I get Ubuntu to accept my mixer as input for audio recording??
I should also state that I am having no other audio issues that I am aware of, and that the cheap, sounds like crap mic that is built into my monitor DOES work with Ubuntu. I need to change away from this mic as the input source and over to my mixer which is connected to my sound card.
Sorry to repeat myself here but I wish to stress that this configuration of mics into mixer into computer is something I have been doing for years on the mac and with windows so I know the problem here lies with Ubuntu. And like I say, I am dual booting now on an HP desktop with Vista and I have success with Vista.
