I am running Ubuntu 10.10.I just purchased a 1TB external drive (USB). I formatted it Ext4 and everything works perfectly except it checks/indexes it everytime i boot which takes forever.I can turn it off on boot to fix the issue, but was just wondering if there was a bypass of this check on this particular drive.
View 2 RepliesI had it in mind that Ubuntu ran disk checks every 30 boots, but mine are more frequent - running between 10 & 25, which is an irritation. Records show checks after: 12-21-10-20-10-20-13-25-16-21 boots. Should I worry about either the frequency or the variability? I found threads suggesting how to change the frequency using tune2fs, so I suppose I can try that to stretch the interval to maybe 50 or weekly? Will it have any effect, since there is so much variation already? Is there a GUI for setting this frequency, instead of fiddling in terminal?

I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.

How do I recover the situation. I do not have an up to date recovery disc. I do have a full bootup disc of Suse 11.2 - could I use the opportunity to update without losing all my personal files, or should I use the old 10.2 disks? The first essential is to get something back up and working.
My SATA drive started clicking and I was unable to access the data. It was not clicking loudly though, like a drive that has already gone bad. After tightening the connections to the hard drive, it stopped clicking and I was able to access the data again. I have started to move files off of the drive, but I think this drive might still be in good health. I didn't find any data corruption and I haven't had any trouble accessing any files. I have never had an SATA drive fail before so I'm thinking that it could have just been the loose connections that was causing the problem. What tests can I run on this drive to find out how healthy it is?

when i login, Ubuntu asks to install 3D Drivers for my grapics card. Can i make a script in openSUSE to do this as well? Or even better, check for drivers on startup and then install the drivers for the graphics card on boot.

On our Windows machines, when the users sign in, their "U:" drive automatically mounts up so that can access their network shared storage. Is there a way to set this up in Linux so it automounts, rather than them have to go and find it out on the network every time?

I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.

I have a Nook ebook reader and would like it to automatically open a certain application when I plug it in.As standard it just opens a nautilus file browser.I cannot find any settings that will let me associate a drive name/uuid with a certain application and google results came up saturated with how to make bootable USB drives.The only solution I actually found was to make a .autorun script in the root of the drive to start my application, but it still requires user interaction and is not ideal since I would like to implement this across several machines with different users/applications.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had windows vista on one partition, xp on another documents on another and programs on another.When I installed ubuntu on a new partition it very kindly let me see all the other partitions and mount them as necessary. I would like all my ubuntu files, documents music downloads to go right on to the documents partition so when I back up that drive to an external I have it backs up the documents drive it has all the files I have created in vista or ubuntu. Eventually I want to leave windows completely but I would still want to store all the ubuntu files on the documents drive.
I can go to "places" and mount the documents drive but what I would like to do is when I fire up ubuntu that the documents drive mounts automatically.

I set up the system to send me an email every time the mdadm stat file changed, so it would send me emails when in periodically ran a self-test. I was away and noticed that the self-test was going incredibly slow (usually took 8 hours...was on course for taking 250 days!) I am trying to run a script which would execute once the system start's up. I placed my script in /etc/init.d and made it chmod +x my-script and placed my script path in /etc/rc.local . It works fine in installed environment and its not working in live cd and USB.

I added the following line to the /etc/fstab to automount the drive at startup.If I manually the mount the drive (mount /mnt/external), I can access and read/write to the external USB drive without any issues. My problem is that during the startup process after a reboot, the drive is not being mounted automatically.
